  • It’s estimated more than 26 million people around the world have dug into their family histories with the help of at-home DNA kits. But finding your ancestors often requires much more than just submitting your DNA. In this growing field of ancestry amateurs, we discovered an unlikely pro and he’s only 18. Michelle Miller reports.

    Genealogy is such an amazing way to understand history, especially when you learn not only your family's stories but how World events shaped your family.

    Here because I started a family tree when I was 10 and now have almost 4,000 people in it at the age of 20. I have helped many relatives that lost contact reconnect and build new relationships. I am a sophomore in college as a pre-med but after this semester I am considering changing my path to become a genealogist. It's so frustrating that it has taken me this long to realize that the pre-med route might not be for me. I hope to gain more clarity soon.

      I can see why you might want to rethink pre med….but the most important thing to consider is “usefulness” of a degree. How many jobs out there for genealogists? What do they make? Can you live anywhere and find work?

      I've been at an Irish brick wall for quite a while. Why oh why did everyone have to be named *Kelly* ?
      Huge respect to this guy, wow. I assumed he was just playing with a pay site. But finding adopted people? That is fantastic.
      It's so addictive. I tell myself I will not spend 20 hours today on genealogy! Then I get a request from someone, and it's *such* a joy to help. I love the work, I love to be able to help. Would like to know how this young man is doing now!

      The more you start with, the better. So start with yourself of course, then write down your parents names, grandparents... I was fortunate enough to have three great grandparents alive during my lifetime, one until I was 28. So before I started doing this seriously, I had a lot of info. And look for *generous* people. We cannot do this without each other, we cannot hold back our .... there's a woman I run into occasionally who isn't generous, so I remind her of how many descendents of the Mayflower passengers there's are in the United States right now :0)
      I also have a Great Uncle who was a genealogist... I miss him so much. He passed away in 2002. Then I run across some data that originated with him. And it's a time machine.
      More than anything else, genealogy has taught me how *connected* We all are, which is awesome, and also has rooted me more deeply in my love of my country. AND an enormous desire to travel :0) But it's been less about me than ... making sure every person is remembered, and remembered with respect. That's very important.
      Sorry! I will learn to self-edit some day :)

      @PM -305, Complete strangers send me messages all the time, so never be afraid to ask for help. A really good genealogist is also very generous. I'm always able to do what I do because of the work of someone I may not get to thank. The Mormon church is as a group incredibly generous, so there are always tons of their records online.

    This is an awesome story. Thank you. My only question, is how sure can you be that the person you think is an ancestor is actually an ancestor? My seaches are on a very common, very familiar name, William Rogers.

    • @FioreCiliegia
      @FioreCiliegia Рік тому

      Focus on siblings, middle names, aunts and uncles, street names or strange occupations! It can be done! If you can’t find him, look for a sibling or an aunt or uncle or cousin with a more unique name!
