One thing I really didn't like about the remakes was the way crash glowed when spinning.
Who else questions "why is it a mystery box when you know what your getting"?
Because it gives you a random number of Wumpas from 4 to 9, sometimes just 1. Also is very rarely to drop you an extra life.

Yes: Some Mystery Crates indeed drop an extra life the 1st time you break it.
No: The RNG still applies to the rest of mystery boxes, no, seriously. Just a few times I got an extra life from Mystery Crates when I played the original PS1 trilogy.
I wish that they should put crash and coco to be in the game at the same time and that would be cool considering 2 players

If you didn't know any better, it's not unreasonable to expect that the hitbox of the hazard would be the entire square area and not just the visual spears, given all the ways the game tries to screw you over.
