  • What are you supposed to do when you are forced to adopt a narrative about your experience that doesn’t tell the whole story? Transgender people have to be diagnosed with “gender dysphoria” in order to gain access to medically transitioning through surgery and hormones. And
transgender people are often only offered media narratives of transgender people “feeling trapped in the wrong body”. Now more than ever, there is a vital need for more expansive transgender narratives that go beyond focusing on just the physical aspects of gender transition.
Ashton Colby is a social entrepreneur, certified yoga teacher, UA-camr / ashtoncolby
He began his gender transition in 2012 and has since become a spiritual bridge-builder reimagining the traditional media narratives of what it means to be transgender. Ashton speaks on not just the physical, but the mental, emotional, and spiritual changes one must undergo to not simply transition but thrive.
Ashton founded Gender YOUphoria, a movement that flips the script on the diagnosis of gender dysphoria. Gender YOUphoria gives name to the profound peak experience of finally aligning all areas of life through gender expression. Ashton Colby is a social entrepreneur, certified yoga teacher, UA-camr and writer from Columbus, Ohio. He began his gender transition in 2012 and has since become a spiritual bridge-builder reimagining the traditional media narratives of what it means to be transgender.
His story and UA-cam channel, “Beyond the Body,” have been featured on People.com, Today.com and many other media outlets. Ashton speaks on not just the physical, but the mental, emotional, and spiritual changes one must undergo to not simply transition but thrive.
As a social entrepreneur, Ashton founded Gender YOUphoria, a movement that flips the script on the diagnosis of gender dysphoria, which is required for transgender people to access medical transition. Gender YOUphoria gives name to the profound peak experience of finally aligning all areas of life through gender expression.
Ashton regularly teaches yoga and meditation to transgender youth. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

This is such a great video. I really relate. I've never bought in to the 'hate my body' concept. But the idea of love what you might become, look with joy to the changes, this is an amazing, welcome perspective.

Thanks for your presentation. It’s not only the body that’s make you unhappy it’s the way you like to live your life as a women or as a man and the body is an important part of it. The world is still binair .. and the body is still defining if you are a woman or a man. This is the reason why I changed my body to be able to leave fully as a woman,.

Dealing with gender issues is only one part of life. If you think fixing those issues will cure all your problems, you are probably headed for rough times. A good therapist (which is needed for surgeries to happen) will point this out. Some folks who transition have a hard time moving on from transition. In a sense you are no longer on 'a mission' to fix your body. You might enter the 'what now?' phase. You then have to learn how to move on and live your life. It doesn't mean transition was a failure, it just means life is complicated and involves a series of adjustments.

I've been questioning my own gender identity recently, and the framing of "gender euphoria" vs "gender dysphoria" really helps, because while I'm perfectly happy with my body, there are certain things that just make the gender identity part of my brain sing, like changing pronouns or my preferred name. It just feels right, it feels better. I agree that this narrative has hurt a lot of people who don't fit in that box.

Listening to transgenders speaking on Ted Talks has informed my thinking on transgenderism 1,000 x more than all of the tweets in the twitterverse.

Me : "How could you say these two in one sentence? Gender dysphoria is opposite of fun."

I don’t get the quintessential idea... is it you don’t need to undergo every step in transition or what does he want to say?

    • @Hm-qd9lo
      @Hm-qd9lo 3 роки тому +1

I think what he's trying to say is that you don't have to have gender dysphoria, or be uncomfortable in your body, to be trans and to go through the steps to transition, if one desired that.

7:30 "I was still deeply unhappy and I didn't know why". An experienced psychologist would give you the simple answer- you actually suffer from narcissistic personality disorder (NPD) and you are profoundly addicted to receiving admiration, whether you deserve it or not.
We all want the 41% figure to become zero but the trans movement is doing it's best to bury the truth; personality disorders are the biggest driver of suicide in the community. That's what the science says. Deal with the excessive demand for admiration and the suicide number will decrease.

This person was promoting anti parent propaganda by telling kids her dad can be their surrogate. Sad sad story. Just putting life on hold to do surgeries and realizing too late that this person just needs to accept who they are. Yes. Stop being a trans activist and put together a food drive or help the needy. Look outside yourself for happiness. Climb a tall mountain. Do something other than recruit children to an ideology that didn’t work for you. Give your life to others.
