  • The betrayal is too great. Brünnhilde remembers a time, not so long ago, that the warrior Siegfried was proclaiming his love and fidelity for her. Now he doesn't even seem to recognize her. She can't believe it. Was it all just a cruel seduction?
When Siegfried grabs the spear of the royal advisor Hagen and vows he has never loved Brünnhilde, it's too much for Brünnhilde to bear. She snatches the spear herself and makes her own pledge:
"Shining steel! Hallowed weapon! Hold this everlasting vow," Brünnhilde sings. "By this spear point, I swear my oath. Spear-point! Hear my word! I pray your might will be his undoing. I pray your sharpness might cut him. For he has broken all his vows, and now a falsehood he has sworn!"
These are no idle words. A vow made on a weapon is broken on pain of death: The spear's owner can claim the vow-breaker's life.
But while Brünnhilde is so angry she could kill Siegfried, both she and Siegfried are being tricked: Siegfried has been drugged with a love potion that wiped all memories of her. And the royal advisor Hagen is the architect of the chaos.
Will Brünnhilde realize Hagen's deception before it's too late? Find out in "Götterdämmerung," the final chapter in Richard Wagner's "Ring" cycle, streaming for free as part of the #OperaIsON series the weekend of March 27, 2021: sfopera.com/op...

On August 30, the final performance of “Götterdämmerung” at the Bayreuth Festival saw Irene Theorin stick up her middle finger to the audience after boos erupted during her final curtain call. According to reports, “first there were some boos for her and then pointing to people in the audience with a finger. She then raised her middle finger and the whole house booed back.” Audience members who witnessed the account were in shock and some took to Twitter to say it was an inelegant gesture and unjustified.

Booing artists is so inelegant, so offensive. A singer who sang for 4 or 5 hours on
stage does not deserve that. If I do not like a performance I remain silent, I do not clap, but I would never think of boing someone. Such hypocrisy from booers who pretend to be shocked by IT sticking up her middle finger (which is also inelegant).

Iréne Theorin got boos after EVERY single perfomance at the Bayreuther Festspiele since the first Götterdämmerung. This is probably VERY frustrating and it‘s so bad of the audience. Of course it‘s an inelegant gesture, but probably Theorin knew that she won‘t come back next year and maybe she won‘t ever come back. So she had nothing to fear. You shouldn‘t do this of course, but I can understand her 🤷🏼‍♀️ She is only a human too

"Moving moment"? I read the comments here (after listening to this clip and many others with Theorins recent performances) and she has a horrible wobble!!!. A singer should not be "excused" due to hours of singing. I have nothing against high salaries and high ticket prices but i think the audience can demand good voices!!!
