This is the Gold Medal bout (L2/Final) of the men's Epee grade A world cup in Paris, France in 2011. Joerg Fiedler of Germany is on the right and Matteo Tagliariol of Italy is on the left.
There's no Right of Way in Epee. So whoever hits first gets the point. If the other player returns the hit in the fraction of the second allowed for a counterattack, both buzzers go off, rewarding both players with a point. Epee is considered the closest to actually dueling, since the target area is the whole body(first to draw blood) and you are not constrained by who gets the RoW.
Nice video. Tagliariol is so good and he makes it look so easy. In this bout it seemed he did not just want to win; he wanted to win with style.
Quite possibly my new favourite bout.
amazing bout. Was riveted the entire time.
i didnt know that. i hope he comes back better than ever!
Matteo Tagliariol is my favourite player
Finally! A fencing video where the views around < 1000!!!!
@MrMetalheart10 there are three types of fencing: epee is the slowest, foil can be either slow or fast depending on the two fencers, and sabre is always fast. check out some sabre before you make up your mind :D
I don't know much about fencing yet. I will start it in a week. Anyways from the bouts I've seen so far, THIS IS THE MOST EPIC AND AWESOME ONE!
With the electronic gear at this level, timing does permit for 2 lights. In foil and sabre there is right of way to be determined if both lights go off, and the ref will determine who began the attack and has right of way.. Epee does not have a right of way rule, so both can score on a double light. I've been fencing for 6-7 years mostly sabre, but dabble in the other weapons. I've been coaching for 2 years. Keep it up. Fencing is a blast.
mine too!
Sorry, do correct me if I'm mistaken, but would the fencing at the beginning be wrong? I mean, in normal, they watch people who are left handed on the left, so they can see the whole body. The position they are standing in right now is covering the body, which makes it impossible to see when the two of them attack simultaneously. Right?
touch #11 is stunning
touch # 13 was awesome!!
@mandapandabear95 It depends on the fencer.I'm a epee fencer and I can regulate my movements making my body lighter and faster to feel comfortable with the epee which is easier to use.If you regularly train your touch with the epee you can make it faster.
@mandapandabear95 no its because the lockout time is so short
That works in saber because of two things which aren't in epee, right-of-way and the fact that you hit people by touching them with the side of the blade instead of the point. If you tried to do that any semi-decent epee fencer would probably attack you during your mad charge and hit you without much trouble
in epee if both of the fencers hit at the same time (if both lights come on) both fencers get a touch. watch some sabre before you decide what real fencing is
that was awesome! :)
Anyone knows the weapon brand and blade used by tagliariol?
Actually, that's not what I was implying, that's what I was stating literally, and perhaps what you inferred. If you would like, remove the "mad" from my previous comment.
And saber footwork is designed for saber, it doesn't make sense to say you're going to use saber footwork for epee, the essence of saber footwork has right-of-way in mind (specifically the unabated fast steps forward), it's vulnerable to attacks on preparation.
i fence foil and i wanted to see the difference between foil and epee. epee is slower!
If you wanna see the best bouts for Matteo, watch him in Beijing 2008!!!! From L32 to the Final!! You will learn a lot!!!! ;)
woo wat a great game
Oh my god...Tagliariol is insane...
@urbanyahoo he wants to win with style in every bout :D
would you believe...he didnt qualify?
i know that as a sport its different and has its own flair but i cant look at this and see it.
Did Fiedler even have a left leg/foot to limp away with at the end of this bout? Geez....
I wonder why Tagliariol didn't participate in London games!!
point #11 for Tagliariol
This really isn't true. Maybe for one point of surprise this will work but any epee fencer worth his salt will be able to parry riposte without getting touched himself after that. They will probably get it off on the first charge anyway. Since you can only score with the tip it's much easier to parry.

Wow.
Wassup Leland. I've watched a couple of your videos. Just reminding you you've got some fans out there. Keep up the good work!
;)
jesus... 1:18 3:41 7:00 (BOOM!) 7:41
I can tell these guys are good but I always imaged fencing being a swordfight instead of just dancing about winning with one touch. I understand this is hard and these guys are masters but it would just be cooler if they were clashing blades and and going for each other.
watch saber... not epee...
This isnt fencing, this is electronic tag. Check out HEMA fencing instead.
