The way Sam says llorona has me dying 🤣😂 also there are so many stories for La Llorona the one Ik is that a Lady was so devastated that her husband was cheating on her and had another family so to get back at him she drowned her kids and then she felt so guilty that she drowned herself to and now throughout the night she goes around crying out “my kids my kids where are my kids” and she’ll take other peoples kids and go into people’s houses and throw things around to get the parents away from there children and then take them to try to replace her own kids.

I’m Mexican and yes “La llorona” is someone we all grew up being afraid of. But she’s not a myth or a make believe ghost she’s real, when I went to visit my grandparents in Mexico when I was 15 years old, I had to pee really bad and my grandparents bathroom isn’t inside the house you had to go outside to the back yard to use the bathroom because the bathroom is built outside of the house in the backyard. Anyways I was trying to hold it in because everyone would say you could hear la llorona crying between 3:00am-4am and god knows I was trying to hold in my pee because I was afraid to go outside to pee. Well I couldn’t hold it in anymore and I went to pee and just when I open the bathroom door I felt a really cold air hit my face like the coldest breeze I’ve ever felt in my life and soon after I heard her crying and let me tell you is the scariest thing I’ve ever heard in my entire life, even now thinking about it I get goosebumps. And imma be honest I got so scared so creeped out I stood there in the middle of the night surrounded by darkness I couldn’t move or speak I went into shock and I literally just stood there and yes I ended up peeing on myself and my grandpa immediately turned on all the lights and brought me back inside the house and I couldn’t speak I couldn’t move he said he woke up because he heard her crying as well. They say that the closest you hear her cry the farthest she is from you but the farthest you hear her crying the closest she is and I remember I heard her really close so that means she was far

So La Llorona actually translates closer to weeping woman. There are many variations of the story but the most famous is this: La Llorona married this rich guy and she got pregnant with two or three kids. Well, the rich dude left her because she got pregnant. So for a long time she was depressed. At one time she got so depressed she brought her kids to a river, and drowned them. Well then she drowned herself out of agony and sadness. Her kids, having still been pure of heart and sinless went to heaven. But La Llorona was banished on Earth to scour the land for her children. But she’ll never find them. She calls out “Mis ijos!” meaning “My Sons!” So now she tends to haunt the waters of Latin America and supposedly roads that have been misted by midnight fog. She’ll be seen on the side of the road and if you don’t stop for her, you’ll see her in your back seat and cause you to crash. Stay safe guys! And happy Spanish Heritage Month.

La llorona (yo-ro-na) was a woman named Maria who was the prettiest girl around. Many wished to marry her but only an explorer caught her attention. At first the explorer and Maria were inseparable. They married and had two children. The explorer would often leave his family for trips and return but only to see his children. Maria grew envious of the children and one day while they were walking along a river she threw them into it. After realizing what she had done she threw herself in the river as well. Because she killed her children and herself she became stuck between both worlds and now roams our world in search of her children.

This is a story that the old ones have been telling to children for hundreds of years. It is a sad tale, but it lives strong in the memories of the people, and there are many who swear that it is true.
Long years ago in a humble little village there lived a fine looking girl named Maria Some say she was the most beautiful girl in the world! And because she was so beautiful, Maria thought she was better than everyone else.
As Maria grew older, her beauty increased And her pride in her beauty grew too When she was a young woman, she would not even look at the young men from her village. They weren't good enough for her! "When I marry," Maria would say, "I will marry the most handsome man in the world."
And then one day, into Maria's village rode a man who seemed to be just the one she had been talking about. He was a dashing young ranchero, the son of a wealthy rancher from the southern plains. He could ride like a Comanche! In fact, if he owned a horse, and it grew tame, he would give it away and go rope a wild horse from the plains. He thought it wasn't manly to ride a horse if it wasn't half wild.
He was handsome! And he could play the guitar and sing beautifully. Maria made up her mind-that was, the man for her! She knew just the tricks to win his attention.
If the ranchero spoke when they met on the pathway, she would turn her head away. When he came to her house in the evening to play his guitar and serenade her, she wouldn't even come to the window. She refused all his costly gifts. The young man fell for her tricks. "That haughty girl, Maria, Maria! " he said to himself. "I know I can win her heart. I swear I'll marry that girl."
And so everything turned out as Maria planned. Before long, she and the ranchero became engaged and soon they were married. At first, things were fine. They had two children and they seemed to be a happy family together. But after a few years, the ranchero went back to the wild life of the prairies. He would leave town and be gone for months at a time. And when he returned home, it was only to visit his children. He seemed to care nothing for the beautiful Maria. He even talked of setting Maria aside and marrying a woman of his own wealthy class.
As proud as Maria was, of course she became very angry with the ranchero. She also began to feel anger toward her children, because he paid attention to them, but just ignored her.
One evening, as Maria was strolling with her two children on the shady pathway near the river, the ranchero came by in a carriage. An elegant lady sat on the seat beside him. He stopped and spoke to his children, but he didn't even look at Maria. He whipped the horses on up the street.
When she saw that, a terrible rage filled Maria, and it all turned against her children. And although it is sad to tell, the story says that in her anger Maria seized her two children and threw them into the river! But as they disappeared down the stream, she realized what she had done! She ran down the bank of the river, reaching out her arms to them. But they were long gone.
The next morning, a traveler brought word to the villagers that a beautiful woman lay dead on the bank of the river. That is where they found Maria, and they laid her to rest where she had fallen.
But the first night Maria was in the grave, the villagers heard the sound of crying down by the river. It was not the wind, it was La Llorona crying. "Where are my children?" And they saw a woman walking up and down the bank of the river, dressed in a long white robe, the way they had dressed Maria for burial. On many a dark night they saw her walk the river bank and cry for her children. And so they no longer spoke of her as Maria. They called her La Llorona, the weeping woman. And by that name she is known to this day. Children are warned not to go out in the dark, for, La Llorona might snatch them and never return them.

im 2 years late, but here's the story in depth. depending on where you live, there will be multiple versions of this story, but the one i was told was this:
there was a young women in a town who was rly beautiful. she wanted to get married, but everyone in the town (including her) was very poor and she wanted to marry rich. then one day, a wealthy man came into her town and saw her beauty and wanted to be with her. flashback to a couple months later when they got married and had two kids. the father had to leave often because it was what his job required. one year, he was gone the whole time and came back on the eldest child's birthday (the oldest was a boy and the youngest was a girl). la llorona (i'm just going to call her that, but she isn't identified as la llorona until after)was so excited to see her husband, but when she ran outside, she saw that the husband had another woman with him. this woman was beautiful and rich. la llorona was furious and called her kids out to greet their dad. the father had a cold shoulder to la llorona until the kids came out and he instantly had a big smile on his face. la llorona saw this and pulled the father aside. they started arguing and it basically ended with the father telling her that he didn't love her anymore, but wanted to see the kids. she was so upset that after he had put the kids to sleep, she woke them up and told them to get dressed. she was so jealous that her kids were the only ones that he loved, that she took them to the river and drowned them. after she realised what she had done, she wailed in pain and the drowned herself. she is said to be walking around trying to find her kids to apologize to them, and will take two siblings that she thinks is hers. once she realizes those two kids aren't hers, she will drown them and continue looking. (the religious side is that her two kids are in heaven and god has here down o earth until she finds her two kids and brings them back up to heaven with her).
this is what i was told so your version might be different than mine but i hoped i was able to give a more indepth story for those who didn't grow up with this story!

Here's the full story:
So her real name is Maria and her husband left her for a beautiful girl so her ex husband (you can say now) said he was only coming back to see the kids so she got jealous and drowned her kids in Mexico which is kinda freaky because I always go to mexico in the summer and in night I always hear her weeping anyways, she realized what she did and tried to get her kids back but she couldn't, so she started crying. She didn't eat for days so she died of starvation. Ever since then, she haunts the river looking for her kids. She cries "mis hijos" or something else. If you roam in the night and she sees you, she will go after you, she will haunt you, she will cry to you, she will take you, or she will do something. If she takes you that means she thinks that you are one of her missing kids. She won't stop until she looks for all her kids.

La Llorona.. She is a ghost that was punished for the deaths of her children. Here is her story: A women was married to a rich man. Her husband always traveled, and every time he would come back from his journey, he would bring gifts for his wife and children. But.. the husband soon only came back with gifts for his children and started to ignore his wife. The wife knew that he wasn't in love with her anymore. Soon, the husband stop coming back from his travels. One day, as the women and her children were walking along the river, a chariot rode up to them. The chariot stopped, and as the women looked at the people, she saw her ex-husband sitting next to a wealthy women. The ex-husband greeted the children and clearly ignored the women. Then the chariot rode off. The women was angered with the fact her husband left her for someone more wealthy. The women grabbed her children by there shirts and pushed there heads under the river water until they stopped moving. After watching her children's bodies be swept away in the river, she realized what she had done. The women threw herself in the river to drown and hoped she will be reunited with her children in the heavens up above. But she was cured forever to walk on the earths ground searching for her children. This made her La Llorona (The weeping women). La Llorona would walk along the rivers edge searching for her children. Be careful. La Llorona might mistake you for her own children. And when she finds out your not.. She will do what she did to her children, drown them in the river. And usally when you hear her weeping.. that means she is coming for you... Be aware of La Llorona!!
