There were pitch correction methods before autotune. One wss varispeed, which Scholz said he used for his guitar layers. Scholz had an Eventide, which was also used at the time for pitch correction. As with the entire album, there are obviously a lot of sound treatments going on here: layering being the most obvious. Delp was a lot less remarkable live.
When he sings about "Those old songs they used to play. I close my eyes and I slip away".......that's what we're doing to this song now. How cool is that! It's like a paradox for a lack of a better word. The man had a golden voice.
I agree this song was new when I first started dating my high school girlfriend and it turns out that it’s practically the story of that relationship as brad sang so many people have come and gone their faces fade as the years go by you I still recall as I wander on as clear as the sun in the summer sky
Who's here after watching the Professor Rock on this song. Wholly crap that voice is making my eyes water up. I still rock out to Boston like they came out yesterday everytime I go through my classic rock section
2:11.6 punched vocal to give Brad the air to hit and hold that high part. You can tell by 2 things: 1, vibrato comes to a complete dead stop and 2, the tone is just a bit different. But it's a clean punch that doesn't even really sound like one.
punching in, overdubbing.... I did boatloads of it all the time because I couldn't be bothered to try redoing the whole thing from the start. it wasn't an attempt to capture a live performance but to create something audibly cool and relatively error-free. Something that would last.
Just amazing. Can't believe I was about 10 years too young so I never was able to hear him live. My heart hurts for our loss of this guy. These vocals only you do are so special - more please!
The late 70s had so many incredible rock albums, that even to this day, 40 + years later, are as fresh and incredible as they were when they first came out...
Recording a vocal track, then recording it again singing it the same, then playing both back on top of each other. Doubled track. I think the entirety of the vocals in this song are double tracked. It's so well done!
@@ryancrazy1 phasing is when two tones (in this case two separate vocal tracks) are close enough in pitch that they generate audible waves of frequency cancellation and amplification.

I was 12 years old, he was my hero. Saw his second to last performance a week before he passed. I'll never forget when my mom broke the news to me. Love you Brad
You'd be surprised at how many incredibly talented people like Brad are just having normal lives, working on factories like he was. We're lucky that we got to see him in Boston.
HOW CAN YOU DOUBLE TRACK THAT ACCURATELY? It almost kind of defeats the purpose of double tracking it, it's so dead on, except it gets that cool modulation texture to it, so whatever...
He apparently had such perfect pitch that he had to consciously sing a few cents sharp or flat when he double tracked his vocals so that it would sound double-tracked, and not just louder. Absolutely insane.
both Tom and Brad were perfectionists and would do hundreds of takes if necessary to get it right ...they were aware of even the most perfect 2nd take would have the slightest amount of dissonance to produce doubled effect that became their trademark ...Tom and Brad WERE Boston others were hired for live shows
MurphyMonster I think Brad and Tom were true professionals! Those first 2 albums are still unbeatable. People talk about Beatles albums or Nirvana Nevermind or Michael Jackson Thriller (all great) but this was something else! So original! 8 killer songs and no filler! TOM SCHOLTZ. BRAD DELP (rip). BARRY GOUDREAU. FRAN SHEEHAN and SIB HASHIAN (rip). The best!
This copy doesn’t show it, but there are times in this song where Scholz guitar harmonized Brads vocal, and the main guitar lead tag that is played after the verses isn’t just 2 guitar harmony part, but a 3 part harmony with 2 guitars and the 3rd part is actually Brad adding some “ahhhhhs” on top. Outright brilliant!
He sings the five notes that come in at :28 and 1:36 also, but I can't find any tracks that isolate it. You can hear him do it if you listen close. At 3:29, he doing it again but adds three more notes
melissa gonzalez, if I never hear that word again, it will be too dang soon. With tens of thousands of words in the English language, why do so many people have to vomit out that same one word 500 times a day!?
Brad's voice could be doubled here, but what I think it is is that it's just the one lead vox track but then they make it sound doubled...playing it on another channel just a split second, millisecond what have you after the first, for that doubling effect. However it was done, he was an amazingly gifted singer.

The scary thing about 3.22 is that the harmony is muted. The notes he hits are F#5 and G5, but the harmony part, he sings A5 and B5, which isn't shown here. I'd really like to hear those harmony parts solo'd, because hitting a B5 is pretty much impossible for 99% of male singers.
By the way I have a wild imagination but 4:17 to the end sounds like what all of those spaceship guitars in a giant convoy going out to space to invade planets with no music to carry on a message of true rock and roll!
The transition from full voice to falsetto the back to full voice a truly superhuman voice
Man...no auto tuner. Pure pitch, what a voice.
Music is so fake now that it’s all singers use now and it doesn’t even sound good
