How to roll crimp with BPI crimper

- In this video I show you how to put a roll crimp on some 12 gauge hulls with a ballistic products incorporated (BPI) 12 gauge roll crimp tool. It is really easy if you preheat the tool and learn from your mistakes (or from mine that I show in the video). Makes a great looking shell AND they shoot well. Got to put a good tight crimp or they won't always go bang. Let me know if you have questions.
For roll crimping you are supposed to have 5mm of heads pace u are far to deep for roll crimp
If you have a mec super sizer I use that to hold my hull in place while I roll crimp on the drill press

Don't you want 1/4 inch to rall crimp you have a hevey crimp won't it billed to much pressure bigger the crimp. Just wondering
My experience has been that even a heavy roll crimp has less pressure than a 6 or 8 pount crimp. My load manual lists lower pressure for all roll crimps with the same load as compared to star crimps.
There is a limit though, too much shell sticking up and your roll crimp will not do well.

Can these be reloaded again after being shot? I’m wondering if this method can only be used once on a new shell
Short answer is yes. These can easily be roll crimped again. They can be star crimped again, but that takes a little more work. I will eventually make a video of that process for folks.
I'm new at this. What benefit does roll crimping offer over the standard crimp?
You don't have to get your column height perfect, so it's easier for buckshot recipes, or experimental recipes where your column height may be off slightly causing a poor crimp.
Roll crimping is very consistent compared to fold crimping. Proper crimping is critical to allow pressures to build to reliable levels for a safe and effective shot. Consistency in crimp = consistency in pressures.
I just add a little bit of vasalin into your roll turnover head, makes a better roll and you can roll as many as you like. I use a double pin,or a 4 pln roll over tool. Best regards from Scotland. Fred
Or rub the outside of the crimping part of the hull with some wax.
Less friction if you use some lube there and easily hold it by hand. 😊 and no need to preheat the crimp tool
Looks like it's time to un roll some birdshot loads and make some custom ones. Buckshot is hard to find right now. Wax slugs. Mini shells are too short to cycle in pumps. Maybe make some custom 2-1/4ish inch shells for them to cycle properly in a pump. Get another round or two in the magazine. It would be interesting to see your take on some custom loads like that.

What's that red Hornady machine thing by the edge of the table???? Is that a crimper as well I looked on hornady's website and could not find anything like that. Can you please tell me what that is and if it is a crimper where I can get it??
That is a trimmer. It lets you trim Handgun and Rifle brass to any length.
It is called the Hornady Cam Lock trimmer. Can be spun by hand or you can attach a power drill. Works well when you want to set a specific length to trim brass to.
What does the pin do? I've seen tools with no pins work just as well.
It is just the way it's designed, I think it helps to smooth the edge a bit by rolling it inward. That's a question for BPI.

Can you vary the length you leave to roll crimp, as long as it bottoms out? I was wondering if shorter would be better. It would certainly be faster.
Shorter is better, easier to get a tight crimp. The beauty of roll crimp is that you don't have to have an exact height. Where as with the star crimp if too short it caves in, if too long the crimp will open up and spill your shot. That's why I exclusivity roll crimp buck shot loads. Hope that helps.

@@bradesteve2077 not exactly. I can though. The way I do it is to use the shell reshaping tool (big aluminum cone) to get them back to round, then load and roll crimp again. I have a video using the reshaping tool (from BPI, called "the spin doctor ")

U get better pressures from fold crimp
You get higher pressures, but not always better. I fold crimp everything but buckshot, but I prefer roll crimping buck.....
How about wad compression, with the roll crimp.
You get lower pressures because you get less wad compression.
@@murphyfirearmstraining3630 so I see your using one of bpi s wads. What if you went to one of the hard gas seals and some other wad with no legs. You said they were longer than crimped. Would your fit and function in just a 2 3/4 inch chamber?
I used to use a 1 1/8 wad with 9 .32 ball or 00buck. With a foam filler and a over shot card crimped, for a low recoil 00 buck load. Using a 1 1/8 powder load , usually 700x around the barn yard. I found load data that in one of my books. That does trap loads and oobuck loads. When you measure the 9 pellets. It's the same weight for volume as shot being dropped
@@sandsock so the 2 3/4 length is unfolded. Even if the roll crimped shell is longer, it will still chamber since the chamber is made for the unfolded length.
Every load I have read for pressure shows the roll crimp with lower pressure than star crimp.

If I was to start loading my own slugs and 00 Buck shells how would I know what sized/thickness overshot cards and wad/filler to use or get? After 3 years is this BPI roll crimper the one to still get?
I think this roll crimper is very good, and would recommend it still. pre-heat it and it works very well.
If you are roll crimping, the thickness of the over shot card doesn't matter, it can be as thick or thin as you want. If you are doing 12 gauge, buy 12 ga overshot cards. They make some really cool clear plastic ones, some thicker ones, and some that are thin as index cards. Any will work with roll crimp.
Thickness matters if you are star crimping.
