I watched this video last night and read the comments in preparation for having 2 teeth removed today. I had IV conscious sedation “twilight sleep”.. I remember the IV and then NOTHING. for the past month all I should have worried about was the IV, and it was the littlest pinch. PLEASE DONT WORRY, you have nothing to worry about.. and this is coming from someone with severe 🔉SEVERE 🔉 dental anxiety. Conscious IV sedation is magic.

I got all of 4 of my wisdom teeth pulled out 6 days ago and I had the IV sedation, I felt NOTHING at all. Recovery is going awesome and I would recommend IV sedation!
I just had conscious sedation done today for 2 teeth and let me tell you, I have TERRIBLE anxiety… when i arrived and sat in the chair I was shaking I was so scared but when they put in the IV in my arm and injected the sedation drug, i INSTANTLY felt it kick in and i don’t even remember going to sleep! It felt like i dosed off for a few minutes and woke up and it was all done!!! No pain either!!! Great and effective way of surgery 100/10 guys, don’t worry at all 😁😁😁
2 teeth extraction? is this really deep sleep? even they open your mouth and using forcep with pressure you remain sleeping? also i have terrible trauma before when it comes lowet molar extraction, so painful. now i have to remove my two wisdom tooth, not impacted and not oral surgery but im afraid due to my bad exp
ok so im getting my 4 wisdom teeth removed and have been watching videos,, in all of them people seem to be kinda awake? im rly scared of even being a bit awake during this, does it still feel like a deep sleep even if they look awake?
I got 4 out a couple weeks ago, and it was literally no problem. In went the IV, then I woke up and it was done. I felt totally in control of my actions pretty much as soon as I regained consciousness.
I had 4 wisdom teeth extracted a few days ago. Like most people, I was nervous, anxious and worried about the pain afterwards. But it was pretty much painless! I sat in the chair, and they inserted the IV into my hand. And then moments later, I woke up again and was standing on my feet! I don't remember a single thing of the procedure. It took maybe 2 hours for the sedation to wear off - a bit of bleeding but defintely not as paindful as I thought it would be. Don't be scared people!

I was scared shitless because I couldn't go fully to sleep but if you have to get an IV sedation don't be scared, the worst part is when the IV goes in but my doctor rubbed a cream on my arm so I didn't feel it what so ever

I had all 4 of my wisdom teeth removed. My IV was already attached before the oral surgeon came in. We spoke and then he put the meds in the IV and that was the last thing I remember. Then I woke in the recovery room. Nothing to be scared of.
I’m getting all of my wisdom teeth removed on Tuesday (it’s currently Friday night) and although I’ve had 5 surgeries, it’s always been under general anesthesia and not IV sedation. I’m definitely a bit worried but watching these videos is helping me relax. Thank you!
The more of these vids I watch, the more I could care less if my wisdom tooth is chipping away at my molar.. The procedure I'm fine with, it's the reaction to the drug and looking completely ridiculous that I have a problem with.
Kuro Cat there are a lot of people who are concerned about those types of reactions with the medications. Keep in mind that the healthcare professional you choose will remain professional as they care for you. Everyone reacts differently to the medications and those reactions are only temporary. If your other teeth are being negatively effected by the position of the 3rd molars I would strongly encourage you to seek and complete treatment as there is currently no perfect replacement for your natural tooth/teeth.
I legit just got my teeth out today. I had heavy IV sedation due to my asthma being a concern. (This supposedly has a stronger ‘high’) I was completely aware of what I was saying and I had complete control. I just didn’t quite understand sarcasm or when my family were joking. I was very emotional as well. You don’t have to worry about spilling some deep dark secret at all.
@Kuro - I agree.. I am watching this stuff to see if it calms my fears about surgery but it isn't. I actually almost think general anesthestia is less scary than twilight. At least with that one you're completely out, like an induced coma. This twilight one you're "aware" and making foolish noises while in some sort of "out there" state of mind.. hell no. I never thought I'd say this but..put me under.
I’m terrified, on Tuesday I’m having 8 root canals, one extraction, and a deep gum cleaning. I’m getting iv sedation since I have a hard time getting numb.
Doing well, had the procedure done before my wedding. It wasn’t too bad honestly. And I thought I needed 8 root canals I actually only needed 2, but I needed 8 teeth crowned. My teeth were pretty sensitive for almost 10 months after. The crowns are all on my front teeth.
I wish I wasn’t such a freak and could tolerate this because I badly need a brain mri but wanted general anesthesia for the procedure. I hate the thought of being out of it and stuck in that state until the sedative wears off.
Im going in to have 7 teeth including all 4 wisdom pulled while being sedated. How much pain will i be in after? And what happens if i start to freak out while under the medication? What if i feel pain? So truly terrified
Shannon Souza those are all great questions. First of all keep in mind that every patient has different experiences, and everyone heals different after surgery, but I will give you some general information. Regarding experiencing pain during the surgery, if you are under general anesthesia you will not respond to pain. That's what defines general anesthesia. You will also not remember. If you are going to be having conscious sedation then you will be able to communicate and tell your surgeon that you are experiencing pain. Your surgeon will then stop and treat the pain either with more local anesthetic or intravenous medications. Regarding your post operative healing, most patients experience the majority of their discomfort on days 3 and 4. After that your will be past the worst and start to feel better each day after. Nights will always be the worst for the discomfort, so be sure to stay on schedule with your medications. If your doctor prescribes a homeopathic medication/ wound dressing called Sockit! that will give you the best pain relief without the downsides of narcotics. Only 8% of dentists use it in this country; but it's been a game-changer for my surgical procedures! Have the faith and trust in yourself and your surgical team that the procedure will go smoothly and you're recovery will be speedy!
Leah Winningham good observation. It's actually not a "crack"... it's the sound of the instrument (periosteal elevator) scraping against the tooth. It's very loud because both structures are very hard.
I got my 4 wisdom teeth removed 3 days ago and they used this exact same sedation as shown in the video , however, although one of the side effects is “memory loss” I KNOW i felt it when they were extracting my right bottom wisdom teeth and it HURTTTT so bad
@@allisoncastillo7675 that's a very great observation! During your sedation appointment it's very possible that as they started to work on that tooth it was not quite numb enough for you. Typically when that happens to me and my patients during a procedure I will stop, tell the patient thank you for letting me know, and then continue to administer more anesthetic and anesthesia to help make the patient more comfortable. I'm assuming this was possibly the case during your procedure, however I was not present so I can't be certain. I can speak for myself and my patients, and when this happens I definitely stop, address the patient's discomfort, make them as comfortable as possible and continue. As far as Amnesia goes, it's not uncommon that you may remember that painful moment. That's what makes the sedation conscious, you will respond to pain, you have the ability to communicate those discomforts to your surgeon and team, and hopefully they make you comfortable enough to proceed. Sometimes this is the first tooth in the mouth that we start working on, because it's not quite numb enough yet and we need to give it more time, and sometimes it's the last tooth in the mouth as a sedation is starting to wear off. This means we typically administer a little more sedative to help make you comfortable. I'm sorry you experienced that discomfort, hopefully you're not traumatized and you're able to continue with other dental treatment without issues.
@@allisoncastillo7675 your facial expressions and tears are usually enough of a communication for us to figure out that you're not comfortable. So hopefully they recognized your distress and were able to treat your pain appropriately so as to get you through the procedure. I'm glad you're not traumatized. I know that procedure can be uncomfortable!
@@allisoncastillo7675 a common side effect of the surgery and sometimes very uncomfortable. Usually the majority of that swelling and tenderness will completely resolved within 2 weeks. Hopefully it's much less for you!
I had this done had major work done took 3 hours to do. I recommend doing IV sedation 100%! I can only remember one part where it was like the scene from "get out" movie where the guy is in a sunken place it wasn't scary though it was actually really fun and only lasted for a moment. To be honest I cant wait to do IV sedation again!
@@jebjed3998 I'm skeptical because I need root canal on a hot tooth which means that local anaesthetic couldn't numb it the last time I tried to get it treated. It was unbearable and couldn't finish the treatment.
@@jesspagan4969 Do the IV sedation its worth it. I was under for 2.5 hours and had 18 fillings done. I also need a root canal this year I will be doing the IV sedation. They also freeze your whole mouth anyway.
I'm extremely nervous to get my wisdom teeth out. I have this fear of dying during the sedation and the surgery as I've seen other cases where people have died during this procedure. My surgeon didn't ask me for my height and weight so how would they know how much sedative to give me? I'm getting a valium pill, nitrous oxide, AND deep iv sedation.
It's not uncommon to have those fears before any surgery. Even I feel that way before I go into surgeries for myself and I understand all of the risks and methods. The drugs are not dependent on your height and weight. The drugs are titrated to the effect of sedation. And often times people who are taller and heavier will require LESS than a thin, young, white, female. Those are usually my patients who require the most amount of drugs to obtain a moderate to deep level of sedation. Have trust that your surgeon understands the drugs and that the procedure will go well. Positive attitudes always make a difference in your healing and outcomes. I wish you luck and positive energy.

all i remember from mine was being extremely anxious, the needle, him putting something in it, then putting something in the bag. i said “wow! i feel that hard” and i don’t remember anything else
I'm getting ready for a massive dental procedure involving two implants and an extraction - I am literally paralyzed with fear and anxiety (maybe not LITERALLY paralyzed lol) so I've been watching clips of twilight sedation so I actually get an idea of just exactly how out of it you are. I have had IV sedation on five prior occasions for other rear molar and wisdom tooth extractions. It is the only way I can tolerate any type of dental procedure at all; I need NO2 and alprazolam for root canals. I've always done well with the Versed and Propofol drip and have no memory of any of those procedures - I'm actually quite surprised to see that you are apparently still semiconscious and communicative during the sedation! I honestly can't even evision myself talking calmly during an extraction LOL.
It's very common to be anxious and fearful regarding any procedure. I do this for a living and whenever I'm the patient I STILL get anxious because that's the normal human response. If you didn't get nervous or anxious that would be more abnormal than the alternative. I know it seems crazy to think that you will be calm and conscious, but that is exactly how the medications work. They trigger the parts of our central nervous system that help us to relax and be less anxious as well as cause amnesia (memory loss). It's really important for you to be at a conscious level because that's what keeps your breathing and heart rate normal. Deeper levels of sedation can required airway intervention and can be more difficult to complete dental treatment as we need you to cooperate with the treatment by opening, closing, checking your bite, and telling us if you are comfortable or uncomfortable. I have a great deal of confidence that you will do great as a patient and that your doctor will take exceptional care of you with his highly trained dental team! Keep me posted on your outcome!

@@amclamb9543 how did your dental experience go? I'm getting two infected root canals removed and zirconia implants put it... opposite sides of the mouth. I'm so freaked out about it! From a holistic dentist.. and yeah, I requested oxy for pain management after as per my last implant I had done elsewhere.
I am only thirteen and I have to get a root canal tinmorrow and I'm scared of not being aware of my surroundings with laughing gas so I would rather be completely asleep or completely awake
Good luck to you today! Laughing gas (nitrous oxide) will help you relax during the procedure, but you will be aware of the surroundings, noise, and sensations, but you'll care a lot less about it. You will also remember everything because it has no amnesia effect.
Had 10 teeth extracted two hours ago with twilight sedation was awake anyone nervous about dentist this is best way to go I was so scared but honestly anyone who has to get this done don't worry at all
Thank you so much for posting this video! I underwent conscious sedation last week for a bronchoscopy. I've been worrying what I might have been like on the versed. I don't drink alcohol anymore, but when I did I would get really offensive. I hope I did not do something horribly embarrassing (like come on to my pulmonologist) when I was out and he was trying to put a scope down my throat. I have a follow-up next week, so I guess I'll find out. Would you say people on versed are similar to people on alcohol in a blackout stage?
That's a really great question! In my personal experience I have seen my patients become very polite, relaxed, and grateful. Versed has the ability to become a 'truth-serum' for some people, but that is rare in my experience. It can sometimes make young females very emotional, as you can see in this video. But for the most part I've never seen anyone get really nasty, mean, or aggressive with versed. Hopefully you become really calm and uninterested in the procedure, because that's the overall goal. Just talk to your doctor, I'm sure he'll tell you that nothing exciting happened. Good luck, and speedy recovery!

Will it work especially because of the bupenorphine??? It's not an opiate but a derivative and for me it's NOT a pain killer. I'm very nervous about this.....
I got my wisdom teeth out 6 months so. I was told I wouldn't remember any of it, but I remember the moment I closed my eyes and everything that happened after I woke up recovering in the chair. I remember the what dentist said and just...... I remember it. Is that normal? Do you know what would cause that? Maybe if they didn't use enough medication? I don't know..
Emily Schultz that's really unfortunate. It sounds like they may not have given you enough medication (titrated) to help you acheive the benefits of amnesia. Hopefully you were comfortable enough to tolerate the procedure. Sometimes young, thin people require more medication to help acheive those benefits.
When I was 10 and 11 and 10 pounds underweight than normal (12 pounds underweight requires hospitalization) and I went from twilight sleep to deep sleep like stage 4 sleep at night (not general anesthesia sleep) while getting fillings and one baby tooth extracted. My sister also had nitrous oxide like me and she was 12 and is overweight but the nitrous oxide didn’t work the way she anticipated. She only had 3 fillings done and no extractions. While having nitrous oxide, neither one of us had local anesthetic shots. Also, she has high pain tolerance and I have low tolerance for pain. I felt some sensitivity when the dentist did one of my 2nd molar fillings but the gas had me not caring but my sister was devastated to the point she didn’t go to the 6 mos checkup by lying and said she had a math quiz. Sometimes, bigger people does require more sedatives than thinner people.
I'm on the methadone programme and I had iv sedation but the doctor didn't account for my tolerance to opioids from being on methadone daily and failed to titrate my medicine up to the correct amount. I felt everything and was too out to it for the doctor to recognise me trying to signal that I was in severe pain. It was horrible and I remember most of it.
I’m having this done tomorrow (Friday) and I’m very scared. They’re giving me conscious sedation for my anxiety but waiting for the day and time I’m having it done is very scary. I’m 18 and I’m having a tooth at the back pulled out. How quickly will I recover from the effects of the drugs? Can it take all day or does it wear off quickly and I might just be tired and need a nap when I get home? My Nan is going to be my “carer” - I’m hoping she’ll make me a cuppa when I’m home. I really hope I won’t feel pain. I also don’t want to remember it. I really hope I don’t remember it. I don’t mind if I remember random segments of it but I don’t want to remember the majority, and I also don’t want to say something weird while I’m under.
The vast majority of people won’t remember anything at all. You’re probably going to sleep a lot when you get home, and won’t remember much of the rest of the day - definitely don’t plan anything for the next 24 hours to be safe. I’m sorry to report that pretty much everyone says at least some wacky stuff though. I had it many years ago, and while it wasn’t for me ( I’ve got some really rare conditions that make me an exception, don’t worry- you’ll be fine!) for most people it’s stress free after they get the IV done. You can absolutely get through this mate!

Sorry for the late reply. I hope your procedure went well and you are on the road for recovery! Most patients will have little to no discomfort for the first 2 days. Days 3-4 tend to be the time the body realizes that something changed and you may experience more discomfort during those days. That's normal. Limit your physical activity, get rest, stay on top of anti-inflammatory meds, and don't stress. It will pass after day 4.
I am 10 getting iv sedation to pull out 4 teeth. I have anxiety about things alot especially surgeries and things. I'm going to Akron Children's bc there is a dental clinic and stuff inside the hospital. I just want to hear stories about how other people's IV sedations went and if they felt any pain.
I'm getting my wisdom teeth out with IV sedation in 3 weeks and I'm terrified. Any sort of mind-altering substances scare me due to a very traumatic experience I had a couple years ago. Are there any risks associated with the IV medication, like memory loss?
@@rtrko1 It went fine. One minute I was getting the IV put in, and the next I was getting ready to go home. I felt a bit groggy afterwards, but that was it. I didn't say or do anything that was out of character.
@@rtrko1 The healing process is different for everyone, but I'd say the average length is 5-7 days. Recovery took a bit longer for me because my wisdom teeth were very impacted, and I have TMD so I was dealing with excruciating jaw pain (from my jaw being pried open so wide during surgery) on top of everything else. Just make sure to follow your dentist/oral surgeon's post-op instructions carefully so you can heal as quickly as possible, and don't end up with dry socket.
I get really bad panic attacks , I've also had bad "experiences" with mind -altering substances. Mostly anxiety and panic attacks. My doc told me today that i have to get mine removed however they are close to the nerve and that they recommend IV sedation. I'm scared AF 1.the wisdom teeth being so close to the nerve and possible nerve damage 2. Not being able to feel my face, cheek, eye etc after the surgery 3. Getting a ridiculous panic attack and elevated heart rate and then think I'm dying from a heart attack 4. not coming back from the anesthesia or maybe having complications And the list goes on and on
I'm scheduled tomorrow to have a tooth pulled using IV sedation. I know this is silly, but will this help with pain? That's the one thing I'm terrified of, as I tried to have my tooth pulled today at my normal dentist, I have NEVER felt pain as I did today.. As long as it's helps with pain control, I'm comfortable with the procedure.
Kasia The Fam that's a great question! IV sedation allows a doctor to administer sedatives to manage anxiety and fear, analgesics to manage pain, and anti-inflammatories or steroids to help with post-operative swelling and pain. It's not always a guarantee that you will be absolutely pain-free, but it definitely makes the experience so much easier to manage for you and the doctor. I never make promises especially if I'm not the doctor, but I will tell you it's going to make the experience much different than what you experience today. As far as the tooth pain goes, you are correct. There really is no pain like tooth pain! It's some of the worst pain that people feel in this life so you are not alone. And that's exactly why we offer IV sedation to our patients. It helps get through a procedure that is really uncomfortable and painful. I think you'll do great and you'll be super happy with the outcome! Good luck tomorrow!
I had oral surgery about two years back. It was not serious. I just had to have some skin of my inner cheek removed because it was swollen and I kept biting it. I had to have it done on both sides of my mouth. My right side was done first, then I was sent home and had to come back to have the other side done, but after the numbing medication wore off I could not move my lips or face , not even squint my eyes because I felt so much pain that resonated from my mouth to practically my entire head. I had to avoid eating anything that required opening my mouth wide. I drank some soup and it had to be liquid soup, no chunks of vegetables or meat or anything in it that required chewing. I could not drink very cold water or drinks. it lasted about a week. Then when I had to have the other side of my mouth done, that is when some strange thigs happened. Even the dental assistant got queasy watching it and blacked out and dropped to the floor and I got up off the dentist chair to help the dental surgeon pick up the assistant who had to be taken out of the room in a wheelchair. When the surgeon saw the assistant falling to the ground, he just suddenly shoved a gauze in my mouth and told me to bite it quickly ( because he had to drop what he was doing to try and catch the assistant) causing the stitches he was working on to be pulled . After the assistant was wheeled out the room, I got back on the dental chair and the oral surgeon finished the stitches. When the numbing medication wore off I went through a long spell of pain again not being able to eat much or move my face. But it turned out that the surgeon did not do a good job on the left side and it has to be re-done all over again.
Wow!! What a unique experience! The assistant may have been new. It's not uncommon for new people (dentists, assistants, hygienists) to get queasy during their first surgical procedure because it takes a while to get accustomed to seeing blood on a human being in real life. Usually that passes after your first few experiences, but sometimes it takes longer for people to overcome that feeling. It could also have been something else that she was personally experiencing, but it's hard to say without knowing the person. In reference to your pain and discomfort from the first side of your mouth, it's hard to say if that was a response to the healing, the surgery, the anesthesia delivery, or other issues. Of course without being there, it's hard for me to say what exactly happened but that definitely sounds like a rare and unique experience that you had!
👋 Anyone reading the comments about to have their surgery … let me explain my experience. ( I got them out 5 hours ago ) I WAS A NERVOUS WRECK before hand watching every video possible reading all experiences on reddit and comments on these videos from the good ones to the bad ones. I’ve been nervous since they told me last year they were coming in. It was a peice of CAKE for the people like me who have severe anxiety about medical stuff you will be just fine! I wasn’t worried about the recovery more so the surgery itself, and a little stressed about the IV ( i was put to sleep with IV sedation ) the IV was NOTHING me and the assistant were giggling and I was asking if I should watch him put it in or look away and he promised me it was nothing and maybe id enjoy watching it go in.. I looked away 😭 but it barley felt like anything, like a poke a tiny little prick. they put the thing on to check my blood pressure every 5 minutes and the thing on ur thumb along with some like patches they put on my lower side and chest. Sat there for about 30 minutes with the IV in my arm until the doctor was ready. He came in asked how I was lowered the chair down and put this thing on my neck to monitor my breathing I think he said,, and then he released THE GOOD ( the fluids into the IV ) it was a crazy experience.. like i was out but wasn’t ? all i last remember is seeing is the light and then within seconds it was done. I was so stressed for NOTHING. so glad I went with IV sedation because I didn’t feel a darn thing! 😂 and the loopyness afterwards ain’t all that bad either. I would definitely do it over again and take away all the stress from before because it was nothing.

I was aware yes, acting a little goofy for a bit but got home laid on the couch and watched tv for the rest of the day and had no issue going to bed at a decent time. the drowsiness wore off pretty quick for me! about an hour after I got home I was pretty much aware of everything. general anesthesia is a lot more powerful there for makes you a WHOLE lot more drowsy lol, so if you’re having iv sedation you most likely wont feel how you did under general !
I have severe agoraphobia and im underweight due to other issues & can't chew well.. Plus i take propranolol 40mg a day in medicine. My dentist has refused to take my decayed teeth out and do any fillings so I've been sent to a specialist and told i need mild sedation. But im absolutely terrified.
John Wayland in most cases I use Midazolam alone, and in some cases I'll add Fentanyl depending on the need to deepen the sedative effect or manage pain. I've found that with most patients regardless of using a narcotic or antihistamine the sedative effects of Midazolam alone will trigger a desire to itch their noses. It almost never fails, and it's fun for us to understand that the raising of their arm means it's time to itch their nose!
In my personal experience the histamine release with the use of Narcotics can also cause the nose itch, but it's definitely not isolated to that. I see it all the time with the use of Benzodiazepines. I personal don't know the EXACT cause as to why that happens, but I strongly believe that there is a histamine release with the benzodiazepines as well. It's almost 99% guaranteed to happen with using an isolated benzodiazepine.... at least in my personal experience.
Julie Lobato I “woke up” crying hysterically too!! Oh thank goodness I’m not the only one. They kept asking me if I was in pain and made us leave through the back door so as to not scare the other patients. I don’t know why. I wasn’t in pain and I don’t remember anything either 🤷♀️ It honestly kinda bothers me that I can’t remember anything. Last thing I remember is them telling me to breathe deeper.
I'm doing conscious sedation. Everyone talks about IVs but it sounds like I'm taking 1 pill the night before, one the day of, one before and some gas. No IV. Now I'm concerned I won't be as well sedated 😓
Everyone responds to the medications differently. In some cases patients can be more sedated with the oral meds than IV because they cannot be titrated. I think you will be surprisingly comfortable with those protocols and may be very groggy for several hours afterwards. That's one of the downsides to oral sedatives.

I have a few false memories (like my mom giving me wine through a baby bottle afterwards 🤣) she was actually giving me pudding and juice (in a glass, no straw) to flush the meds out of my system... but I was so wasted lol You'll be fine.
I hope you can answer this before Monday morning....I HATE being high or under the influence but I need to be sedated for my procedure. I wish it would jus put me out fast. How long does it take to make me sleep? I don’t want to bug out while I start to feel the effects. I’m so scared. What if I jump out of the seat while they inject jt
The drugs can start working REALLY quick. Some of the variables include the flow rate of the IV fluids, the catheter size, and the amount of medication administered. Just let your doctor know that you want to start feeling the meds ASAP. I've never had anyone jump out of the chair, but I also get in and get started right away and I never waste any time once the patient is in the chair. I know how anxious people can be! I find the day to day of being an oral surgeon to be hillariouse.You shoot em up with Fentanyl acting like "Hey we're here to chill, yeah, how you doing? Good? You wanna take a nap? Here's some more of that good stuff. Can you still remember your name? How about now? No? Ok good." Then you get to work with buzz-saws, picks, files, hammers and chisels making a gory mess of them, sew it back up and when they wake up again, "hey hey, that was fun right? No horrible pain? What no, I didn't say anything. Have a nice day"
What's crazy is I had all 4 wisdom teeth removed with just Novocain and I actually had ZERO recovery time. I bled for like 12 hours, but the very next day, I was able to eat normally again and I never once had to use any pain medication. I think my teeth were just super ready to come out or something.
It's actually not uncommon to get wisdom teeth removed with just local anesthetic. Even impacted teeth can be removed with just local. Sedation is an adjunct that makes it more tolerable. Also... no dentist uses Novocaine. That's an outdated term. It has not been used since the early 60's. We all use lidocaine or other derivatives from cocaine. Novocaine was phased out when lidocaine came along because Novocaine had too many adverse reactions. Just a fun fact everyone should know. We use the same stuff they do when you get stitches at the ER or dermatologist... 😉
I'm not entirely immune but my adrenaline takes over the drug as I have a severe anxiety disorder, do not fear though, call your insurance and ask for General Anesthesia
If you're Anxiety is incredibly severe, then the sedation will still work like a charm. You can be having a full blown panic attack, and the sedation will still relax you pretty much instantly, since it is getting injected straight into your vains. Your body will suddenly go into mellow land before 20 seconds go by.
You don't 'have' to, but it makes the procedure more comfortable and helps the recovery process. I will say that if you're sedated you won't remember the shot anyway. So if that is your biggest fear and phobia, it will happen with no memory.
I was asking because everytime I get a dental shot in the upper teeth it makes me very dizzy and it feels like it has a stinging sensation in my max sinus and it makes me feel like I have a really bad cold like stopped up in my sinus and it has messed with my hearing that ear tubes won’t help me hear and each dental visit make it worse

I just got all 4 out and I was sedated this way. My bottoms were also extremely close to the nerve. The last thing I remember was them putting the wedge in my mouth and then I “woke up” and was ready to go in about 10 minutes. The thing that freaks me out is that we are technically fully conscious but have absolutely no recollection of the whole procedure. Thinking about it is weird to me

By definition if you're going into general anesthesia you will not respond to pain or feeling. You will be unresponsive to any actions like pulling, tugging, or the anesthetic being delivered.
jlt1984 Yes, people can snore while sedated. Snoring is the noise that is made when the relaxed muscles of the airway flap against each other as the air passes through the throat. The drugs that are given to cause the sedation can also can contribute to the muscle relaxation and thus increase snoring. Snoring is not ideal for sedation because it is also considered to be a form of airway obstruction.
I'm being sedated here in Scotland in a few weeks, conscious sedation. I'm scared because I have BPD and i don't want to say something embarrassing! Is that something that happens alot? Or do people just tend to laugh or stay quiet. I have a stressed out personality not relaxed.
First of all I want to say that I absolutely LOVE Scotland! It would be a dream to move there for a few years to live, teach, and work! But, back to your question. Everybody is unique under sedation. I don't see people saying weird things to me when they are at the right level of Conscious Sedation, otherwise known as moderate sedation. People who have stressed personalities will usually ask me during the appointment if they are doing okay. Some people will just sit there quietly and let the drugs do what they're good at, which is caused relaxation and anxiety relief. Yes, I do have some patients that laugh during the procedure, but those are usually people who are going into the appointment without any anxiety. They really enjoy the feeling they get while under the medications. You will feel the same thing oh, but your personality will still be stressed going into it. If you tell yourself to enjoy the ride, it helps make the drugs work a lot better. It's definitely a mind over matter when you go into the appointment. Once the drugs get into your system, they will do the rest to help you feel less anxiety. Medicaid wouldn't cover my wisdom teeth sedation. So I had to be awake the entire time scared out of my wits. I have to go to the dentist tomorrow and I'm terrified to go.
Brianna C sadly that is a common problem with many insurance companies. They only pay for the bare minimum and never what is best for the patient and the patient's needs. I hope you can overcome your anxieties and have a great dental appointment!
I got lucky. This dentist found a way around having to do iv sedation so my insurance will pay for it. He's Rxed me ativan, valium and hydroxyzine for when I have to have my root canals done.

For my sister, she have insurance to cover sedation but the problem is that most dentists that take her insurance doesn’t do sedation or only offer it for children and then the majority of the dentist that does offer sedation doesn’t accept her insurance
I have all four wisdom teeth impacted and I hate the feeling of them poking and prodding in my mouth, especially the taste of blood I’m going to be so freaked out.
Hopefully you will be either sedated or very numb so that your anxiety will be less. I agree with you, those are all the things that I hate the most about dentistry. Even as a dentist I am super wimpy when it comes to getting work done on myself and being the patient. It's one of my least favorite human experiences.
I had my surgery today and it went off without a hitch. The doctor put the IV in my arm, I began to feel a bit lightheaded and then the nurse put an oxygen tube up my nose, told me to breathe and I was out like a light. Next thing I knew I was in a wheelchair being rolled out to my mom’s car. Very groggy and sleepy of course afterwards.
Jessyca Roy Landry what specific side effects are you concerned about? As a female one of the most common side effects that I experience from sedation should I undergo a procedure is nausea immediately after and during recovery. This however can easily be avoided if the surgeon uses little or no narcotics. A great thing to ask your surgeon ahead of time is if he could use less narcotics if nausea is the problem that you are concerned about. Staying under 50 micrograms of fentanyl is a great way to avoid nausea for females after surgery.

I have a history of dizziness/vertigo (I just don't want to feel that way induced by a drug, it would probably make me feel a bit of panic), and I also dislike not remembering. I have quite a small palate/mouth and I have had a lot of teeth removed in the past. I feel like I could do this with a local anesthesia or maybe with some laughing gas, but I don't know if I want the sedation per se. I'm basically afraid of the anesthesia feeling. :/ I also have mild hypermobility however and I've been told that I process local anesthesia quite fast.
Jessyca Roy Landry sedation is actually not "required" to take out wisdom teeth. It's a bonus to patients because they get memory loss and comfort, and its a bonus to the surgeon because they can work on you and not worry about "human" emotions and we make a little more money. If you're more comfortable doing it without sedation that's totally fine. I do wisdom teeth extractions all the time without sedation! Personally, I'm a wimp when I'm the patient. That's why I would choose sedation for myself. But if you're brave and don't mind the noises and pressure, you can do it without. It's YOUR choice, because it's your body.

I understand the reasons why he does it and maybe being a oral surgeon myself I'd do the same thing! The patient that was laughing the whole time looked like she was having a great old time haha. Im getting a full mouth restoration, all extracted, 6 implants up top and 6 bottom, 2 full zirconia arches. I will be having iv sedation. Im slightly concerned i wont be able to accurately communicate any pain im experiencing during surgery. I might be able to answer when directly asked but i dont think i could form coherent enough sentences if i was in pain. I seem to have a high tolerance to everything and often have issues with feeling intense pain during a dental visit, even after explaining to dentist. They never really believe me, until they all finnally do, usually after traumatising me a little bit more each time.

Her eyes should be able to open. This is conscious sedation which means that the patient's can communicate to us and respond to commands that we ask them. As the drugs begin to wear off the patient will loose memories of the event and may even have memory loss during the appointment. General Anesthesia is a deeper level of sedation where the patient will not respond to verbal commands and will not respond to painful stimulation. This is a level where the patient's eyes may remained closed during the entire appointment. The difference between these two levels of sedation can be difficult for some patients and even practitioners to understand.

Twilight sleep is a term that is reserved for deep sedation. This patient is at a level of Moderate sedation also known as Conscious Sedation. The levels of sedation are as follows: 1. Anxiolysis (Anxiety relief) 2. Moderate Sedation (Conscious Sedation) 3. Deep Sedation 4. General Anesthesia

And despite what people think, the mouth doesn't need to be open all the way in order to get the teeth out. In fact, the top wisdom teeth come out easier when the mouth is almost closed all the way.
She is so putting on a show with that laughing. I've been under this before and I was conscious enough to be a show off for cameras if I knew they were there. It was so overdone and clearly forced to me.
No, we did not. Nitrous oxide, also known as 'Laughing gas' only works as long as you breathe it in. Once you stop breathing it in, the effects stop working. Notice there are no nasal hoods on the patient which deliver those gasses. The laughing is a result of her personality in conjunction with the anxiolytic medications.
According to this patient, she assumed she was asleep as well! The amnesia affect of the medications make people think they were asleep the whole time even though they were able to communicate if we required them to do so. If we doing dental work on this patient (stimulating her), she would quickly fall into a sleep.
I watched this video last night and read the comments in preparation for having 2 teeth removed today. I had IV conscious sedation “twilight sleep”.. I remember the IV and then NOTHING. for the past month all I should have worried about was the IV, and it was the littlest pinch. PLEASE DONT WORRY, you have nothing to worry about.. and this is coming from someone with severe 🔉SEVERE 🔉 dental anxiety. Conscious IV sedation is magic.

I got all of 4 of my wisdom teeth pulled out 6 days ago and I had the IV sedation, I felt NOTHING at all. Recovery is going awesome and I would recommend IV sedation!
I just had conscious sedation done today for 2 teeth and let me tell you, I have TERRIBLE anxiety… when i arrived and sat in the chair I was shaking I was so scared but when they put in the IV in my arm and injected the sedation drug, i INSTANTLY felt it kick in and i don’t even remember going to sleep! It felt like i dosed off for a few minutes and woke up and it was all done!!! No pain either!!! Great and effective way of surgery 100/10 guys, don’t worry at all 😁😁😁

I got 4 out a couple weeks ago, and it was literally no problem. In went the IV, then I woke up and it was done. I felt totally in control of my actions pretty much as soon as I regained consciousness.
I had 4 wisdom teeth extracted a few days ago. Like most people, I was nervous, anxious and worried about the pain afterwards. But it was pretty much painless!
I sat in the chair, and they inserted the IV into my hand. And then moments later, I woke up again and was standing on my feet! I don't remember a single thing of the procedure. It took maybe 2 hours for the sedation to wear off - a bit of bleeding but defintely not as paindful as I thought it would be. Don't be scared people!

I had all 4 of my wisdom teeth removed. My IV was already attached before the oral surgeon came in. We spoke and then he put the meds in the IV and that was the last thing I remember. Then I woke in the recovery room. Nothing to be scared of.

I’m getting all of my wisdom teeth removed on Tuesday (it’s currently Friday night) and although I’ve had 5 surgeries, it’s always been under general anesthesia and not IV sedation. I’m definitely a bit worried but watching these videos is helping me relax. Thank you!

The more of these vids I watch, the more I could care less if my wisdom tooth is chipping away at my molar.. The procedure I'm fine with, it's the reaction to the drug and looking completely ridiculous that I have a problem with.
Kuro Cat there are a lot of people who are concerned about those types of reactions with the medications. Keep in mind that the healthcare professional you choose will remain professional as they care for you. Everyone reacts differently to the medications and those reactions are only temporary. If your other teeth are being negatively effected by the position of the 3rd molars I would strongly encourage you to seek and complete treatment as there is currently no perfect replacement for your natural tooth/teeth.
I legit just got my teeth out today. I had heavy IV sedation due to my asthma being a concern. (This supposedly has a stronger ‘high’) I was completely aware of what I was saying and I had complete control. I just didn’t quite understand sarcasm or when my family were joking. I was very emotional as well.

@Kuro - I agree.. I am watching this stuff to see if it calms my fears about surgery but it isn't. I actually almost think general anesthestia is less scary than twilight. At least with that one you're completely out, like an induced coma. This twilight one you're "aware" and making foolish noises while in some sort of "out there" state of mind.. hell no. Doing well, had the procedure done before my wedding. It wasn’t too bad honestly. And I thought I needed 8 root canals I actually only needed 2, but I needed 8 teeth crowned. My teeth were pretty sensitive for almost 10 months after. The crowns are all on my front teeth.
I wish I wasn’t such a freak and could tolerate this because I badly need a brain mri but wanted general anesthesia for the procedure. I hate the thought of being out of it and stuck in that state until the sedative wears off.
Im going in to have 7 teeth including all 4 wisdom pulled while being sedated. How much pain will i be in after? And what happens if i start to freak out while under the medication? What if i feel pain? So truly terrified
Shannon Souza those are all great questions. First of all keep in mind that every patient has different experiences, and everyone heals different after surgery, but I will give you some general information.
Regarding experiencing pain during the surgery, if you are under general anesthesia you will not respond to pain. That's what defines general anesthesia. You will also not remember. If you are going to be having conscious sedation then you will be able to communicate and tell your surgeon that you are experiencing pain. Your surgeon will then stop and treat the pain either with more local anesthetic or intravenous medications.
Regarding your post operative healing, most patients experience the majority of their discomfort on days 3 and 4. After that your will be past the worst and start to feel better each day after. Nights will always be the worst for the discomfort, so be sure to stay on schedule with your medications. If your doctor prescribes a homeopathic medication/ wound dressing called Sockit! that will give you the best pain relief without the downsides of narcotics. Only 8% of dentists use it in this country; but it's been a game-changer for my surgical procedures!
Have the faith and trust in yourself and your surgical team that the procedure will go smoothly and you're recovery will be speedy!

Leah Winningham good observation. It's actually not a "crack"... it's the sound of the instrument (periosteal elevator) scraping against the tooth. It's very loud because both structures are very hard.
I got my 4 wisdom teeth removed 3 days ago and they used this exact same sedation as shown in the video , however, although one of the side effects is “memory loss” I KNOW i felt it when they were extracting my right bottom wisdom teeth and it HURTTTT so bad

@@allisoncastillo7675 that's a very great observation! During your sedation appointment it's very possible that as they started to work on that tooth it was not quite numb enough for you. Typically when that happens to me and my patients during a procedure I will stop, tell the patient thank you for letting me know, and then continue to administer more anesthetic and anesthesia to help make the patient more comfortable. I'm assuming this was possibly the case during your procedure, however I was not present so I can't be certain. I can speak for myself and my patients, and when this happens I definitely stop, address the patient's discomfort, make them as comfortable as possible and continue. As far as Amnesia goes, it's not uncommon that you may remember that painful moment. That's what makes the sedation conscious, you will respond to pain, you have the ability to communicate those discomforts to your surgeon and team, and hopefully they make you comfortable enough to proceed. Sometimes this is the first tooth in the mouth that we start working on, because it's not quite numb enough yet and we need to give it more time, and sometimes it's the last tooth in the mouth as a sedation is starting to wear off. This means we typically administer a little more sedative to help make you comfortable. I'm sorry you experienced that discomfort, hopefully you're not traumatized and you're able to continue with other dental treatment without issues.
@@allisoncastillo7675 your facial expressions and tears are usually enough of a communication for us to figure out that you're not comfortable. So hopefully they recognized your distress and were able to treat your pain appropriately so as to get you through the procedure. I'm glad you're not traumatized. I know that procedure can be uncomfortable!
@@allisoncastillo7675 a common side effect of the surgery and sometimes very uncomfortable. Usually the majority of that swelling and tenderness will completely resolved within 2 weeks. Hopefully it's much less for you!
I had this done had major work done took 3 hours to do. I recommend doing IV sedation 100%! I can only remember one part where it was like the scene from "get out" movie where the guy is in a sunken place it wasn't scary though it was actually really fun and only lasted for a moment. To be honest I cant wait to do IV sedation again!

@@jebjed3998 I'm skeptical because I need root canal on a hot tooth which means that local anaesthetic couldn't numb it the last time I tried to get it treated. It was unbearable and couldn't finish the treatment.
@@jesspagan4969 Do the IV sedation its worth it. I was under for 2.5 hours and had 18 fillings done. I also need a root canal this year I will be doing the IV sedation. They also freeze your whole mouth anyway.

That's the thing, sedated doesn't mean knocked out. That's general anaesthetic. Sedation is conscious.
I'm extremely nervous to get my wisdom teeth out. I have this fear of dying during the sedation and the surgery as I've seen other cases where people have died during this procedure. My surgeon didn't ask me for my height and weight so how would they know how much sedative to give me? I'm getting a valium pill, nitrous oxide, AND deep iv sedation.
It's not uncommon to have those fears before any surgery. Even I feel that way before I go into surgeries for myself and I understand all of the risks and methods. The drugs are not dependent on your height and weight. The drugs are titrated to the effect of sedation. And often times people who are taller and heavier will require LESS than a thin, young, white, female. Those are usually my patients who require the most amount of drugs to obtain a moderate to deep level of sedation. Have trust that your surgeon understands the drugs and that the procedure will go well. Positive attitudes always make a difference in your healing and outcomes. I wish you luck and positive energy.

I'm getting ready for a massive dental procedure involving two implants and an extraction - I am literally paralyzed with fear and anxiety (maybe not LITERALLY paralyzed lol) so I've been watching clips of twilight sedation so I actually get an idea of just exactly how out of it you are. I have had IV sedation on five prior occasions for other rear molar and wisdom tooth extractions. It is the only way I can tolerate any type of dental procedure at all; I need NO2 and alprazolam for root canals. I've always done well with the Versed and Propofol drip and have no memory of any of those procedures - I'm actually quite surprised to see that you are apparently still semiconscious and communicative during the sedation! I honestly can't even evision myself talking calmly during an extraction LOL.
It's very common to be anxious and fearful regarding any procedure. I do this for a living and whenever I'm the patient I STILL get anxious because that's the normal human response. If you didn't get nervous or anxious that would be more abnormal than the alternative. I know it seems crazy to think that you will be calm and conscious, but that is exactly how the medications work. They trigger the parts of our central nervous system that help us to relax and be less anxious as well as cause amnesia (memory loss). It's really important for you to be at a conscious level because that's what keeps your breathing and heart rate normal. Deeper levels of sedation can required airway intervention and can be more difficult to complete dental treatment as we need you to cooperate with the treatment by opening, closing, checking your bite, and telling us if you are comfortable or uncomfortable. I have a great deal of confidence that you will do great as a patient and that your doctor will take exceptional care of you with his highly trained dental team! Keep me posted on your outcome!

Good luck to you today! Laughing gas (nitrous oxide) will help you relax during the procedure, but you will be aware of the surroundings, noise, and sensations, but you'll care a lot less about it. You will also remember everything because it has no amnesia effect.

Thank you so much for posting this video! I underwent conscious sedation last week for a bronchoscopy. I've been worrying what I might have been like on the versed. I don't drink alcohol anymore, but when I did I would get really offensive. I hope I did not do something horribly embarrassing (like come on to my pulmonologist) when I was out and he was trying to put a scope down my throat. I have a follow-up next week, so I guess I'll find out. Would you say people on versed are similar to people on alcohol in a blackout stage?
That's a really great question! In my personal experience I have seen my patients become very polite, relaxed, and grateful. Versed has the ability to become a 'truth-serum' for some people, but that is rare in my experience. It can sometimes make young females very emotional, as you can see in this video. But for the most part I've never seen anyone get really nasty, mean, or aggressive with versed. Hopefully you become really calm and uninterested in the procedure, because that's the overall goal. Just talk to your doctor, I'm sure he'll tell you that nothing exciting happened. Good luck, and speedy recovery!

I got my wisdom teeth out 6 months so. I was told I wouldn't remember any of it, but I remember the moment I closed my eyes and everything that happened after I woke up recovering in the chair. I remember the what dentist said and just...... I remember it. Is that normal? Do you know what would cause that? Maybe if they didn't use enough medication? I don't know..

Emily Schultz that's really unfortunate. It sounds like they may not have given you enough medication (titrated) to help you acheive the benefits of amnesia. Hopefully you were comfortable enough to tolerate the procedure. Sometimes young, thin people require more medication to help acheive those benefits.
When I was 10 and 11 and 10 pounds underweight than normal (12 pounds underweight requires hospitalization) and I went from twilight sleep to deep sleep like stage 4 sleep at night (not general anesthesia sleep) while getting fillings and one baby tooth extracted. My sister also had nitrous oxide like me and she was 12 and is overweight but the nitrous oxide didn’t work the way she anticipated. She only had 3 fillings done and no extractions. While having nitrous oxide, neither one of us had local anesthetic shots. Also, she has high pain tolerance and I have low tolerance for pain. I felt some sensitivity when the dentist did one of my 2nd molar fillings but the gas had me not caring but my sister was devastated to the point she didn’t go to the 6 mos checkup by lying and said she had a math quiz. Sometimes, bigger people does require more sedatives than thinner people.
I'm on the methadone programme and I had iv sedation but the doctor didn't account for my tolerance to opioids from being on methadone daily and failed to titrate my medicine up to the correct amount. I felt everything and was too out to it for the doctor to recognise me trying to signal that I was in severe pain. It was horrible and I remember most of it.
They would give local anesthesia too. Did that not work? They would need to wait for it to kick in

I’m having this done tomorrow (Friday) and I’m very scared. They’re giving me conscious sedation for my anxiety but waiting for the day and time I’m having it done is very scary. I’m 18 and I’m having a tooth at the back pulled out. How quickly will I recover from the effects of the drugs? Can it take all day or does it wear off quickly and I might just be tired and need a nap when I get home? My Nan is going to be my “carer” - I’m hoping she’ll make me a cuppa when I’m home. The vast majority of people won’t remember anything at all. You’re probably going to sleep a lot when you get home, and won’t remember much of the rest of the day - definitely don’t plan anything for the next 24 hours to be safe. I’m sorry to report that pretty much everyone says at least some wacky stuff though. I had it many years ago, and while it wasn’t for me ( I’ve got some really rare conditions that make me an exception, don’t worry- you’ll be fine!) for most people it’s stress free after they get the IV done. You can absolutely get through this mate!

Sorry for the late reply. I hope your procedure went well and you are on the road for recovery! Most patients will have little to no discomfort for the first 2 days. Days 3-4 tend to be the time the body realizes that something changed and you may experience more discomfort during those days. That's normal. Limit your physical activity, get rest, stay on top of anti-inflammatory meds, and don't stress. It will pass after day 4.
I am 10 getting iv sedation to pull out 4 teeth. I have anxiety about things alot especially surgeries and things. I'm going to Akron Children's bc there is a dental clinic and stuff inside the hospital. I just want to hear stories about how other people's IV sedations went and if they felt any pain.

@@rtrko1 The healing process is different for everyone, but I'd say the average length is 5-7 days. Recovery took a bit longer for me because my wisdom teeth were very impacted, and I have TMD so I was dealing with excruciating jaw pain (from my jaw being pried open so wide during surgery) on top of everything else. Just make sure to follow your dentist/oral surgeon's post-op instructions carefully so you can heal as quickly as possible, and don't end up with dry socket.
I get really bad panic attacks , I've also had bad "experiences" with mind -altering substances. Mostly anxiety and panic attacks. My doc told me today that i have to get mine removed however they are close to the nerve and that they recommend IV sedation.
I'm scared AF
1.the wisdom teeth being so close to the nerve and possible nerve damage
2. Not being able to feel my face, cheek, eye etc after the surgery
3. Getting a ridiculous panic attack and elevated heart rate and then think I'm dying from a heart attack
4. not coming back from the anesthesia or maybe having complications

I'm scheduled tomorrow to have a tooth pulled using IV sedation. I know this is silly, but will this help with pain? That's the one thing I'm terrified of, as I tried to have my tooth pulled today at my normal dentist, I have NEVER felt pain as I did today.. As long as it's helps with pain control, I'm comfortable with the procedure.
Kasia The Fam that's a great question! IV sedation allows a doctor to administer sedatives to manage anxiety and fear, analgesics to manage pain, and anti-inflammatories or steroids to help with post-operative swelling and pain. It's not always a guarantee that you will be absolutely pain-free, but it definitely makes the experience so much easier to manage for you and the doctor. I never make promises especially if I'm not the doctor, but I will tell you it's going to make the experience much different than what you experience today. As far as the tooth pain goes, you are correct. There really is no pain like tooth pain! It's some of the worst pain that people feel in this life so you are not alone. And that's exactly why we offer IV sedation to our patients. It helps get through a procedure that is really uncomfortable and painful. I think you'll do great and you'll be super happy with the outcome! Good luck tomorrow!

I get this on the 13th of December. I’m terrified that I’m going to go out airing all my secrets while I’m recovering from the Iv sedation 😬
I had oral surgery about two years back. It was not serious. I just had to have some skin of my inner cheek removed because it was swollen and I kept biting it. I had to have it done on both sides of my mouth. My right side was done first, then I was sent home and had to come back to have the other side done, but after the numbing medication wore off I could not move my lips or face , not even squint my eyes because I felt so much pain that resonated from my mouth to practically my entire head. I had to avoid eating anything that required opening my mouth wide. I drank some soup and it had to be liquid soup, no chunks of vegetables or meat or anything in it that required chewing. I could not drink very cold water or drinks. it lasted about a week. Then when I had to have the other side of my mouth done, that is when some strange thigs happened. Even the dental assistant got queasy watching it and blacked out and dropped to the floor and I got up off the dentist chair to help the dental surgeon pick up the assistant who had to be taken out of the room in a wheelchair. When the surgeon saw the assistant falling to the ground, he just suddenly shoved a gauze in my mouth and told me to bite it quickly ( because he had to drop what he was doing to try and catch the assistant) causing the stitches he was working on to be pulled . After the assistant was wheeled out the room, I got back on the dental chair and the oral surgeon finished the stitches. When the numbing medication wore off I went through a long spell of pain again not being able to eat much or move my face. But it turned out that the surgeon did not do a good job on the left side and it has to be re-done all over again.
Wow!! What a unique experience! The assistant may have been new. It's not uncommon for new people (dentists, assistants, hygienists) to get queasy during their first surgical procedure because it takes a while to get accustomed to seeing blood on a human being in real life. Usually that passes after your first few experiences, but sometimes it takes longer for people to overcome that feeling. It could also have been something else that she was personally experiencing, but it's hard to say without knowing the person. In reference to your pain and discomfort from the first side of your mouth, it's hard to say if that was a response to the healing, the surgery, the anesthesia delivery, or other issues. Of course without being there, it's hard for me to say what exactly happened but that definitely sounds like a rare and unique experience that you had!

👋 Anyone reading the comments about to have their surgery … let me explain my experience. ( I got them out 5 hours ago ) I WAS A NERVOUS WRECK before hand watching every video possible reading all experiences on reddit and comments on these videos from the good ones to the bad ones. I’ve been nervous since they told me last year they were coming in. It was a peice of CAKE for the people like me who have severe anxiety about medical stuff you will be just fine! I wasn’t worried about the recovery more so the surgery itself, and a little stressed about the IV ( i was put to sleep with IV sedation ) the IV was NOTHING me and the assistant were giggling and I was asking if I should watch him put it in or look away and he promised me it was nothing and maybe id enjoy watching it go in.. I looked away 😭 but it barley felt like anything, like a poke a tiny little prick. they put the thing on to check my blood pressure every 5 minutes and the thing on ur thumb along with some like patches they put on my lower side and chest. Sat there for about 30 minutes with the IV in my arm until the doctor was ready. He came in asked how I was lowered the chair down and put this thing on my neck to monitor my breathing I think he said,, and then he released THE GOOD ( the fluids into the IV ) it was a crazy experience.. like i was out but wasn’t ? all i last remember is seeing is the light and then within seconds it was done. I was so stressed for NOTHING. so glad I went with IV sedation because I didn’t feel a darn thing! 😂 and the loopyness afterwards ain’t all that bad either. I would definitely do it over again and take away all the stress from before because it was nothing.

I was aware yes, acting a little goofy for a bit but got home laid on the couch and watched tv for the rest of the day and had no issue going to bed at a decent time. the drowsiness wore off pretty quick for me! about an hour after I got home I was pretty much aware of everything. general anesthesia is a lot more powerful there for makes you a WHOLE lot more drowsy lol, so if you’re having iv sedation you most likely wont feel how you did under general !
I have severe agoraphobia and im underweight due to other issues & can't chew well.. Plus i take propranolol 40mg a day in medicine. My dentist has refused to take my decayed teeth out and do any fillings so I've been sent to a specialist and told i need mild sedation. But im absolutely terrified.

Hopefully everything went great during the procedure. It's not uncommon for loved ones to be anxious for the patient. That's what makes us human.
Gina, what drugs did you use? Narcotic histamine release causes itchy nose? What ? Very nice and useful video.
John Wayland in most cases I use Midazolam alone, and in some cases I'll add Fentanyl depending on the need to deepen the sedative effect or manage pain. I've found that with most patients regardless of using a narcotic or antihistamine the sedative effects of Midazolam alone will trigger a desire to itch their noses. It almost never fails, and it's fun for us to understand that the raising of their arm means it's time to itch their nose!
So, the itching is not caused by narcotic histamine release? Is the cause known? Thank you.
In my personal experience the histamine release with the use of Narcotics can also cause the nose itch, but it's definitely not isolated to that. I see it all the time with the use of Benzodiazepines. I personal don't know the EXACT cause as to why that happens, but I strongly believe that there is a histamine release with the benzodiazepines as well. It's almost 99% guaranteed to happen with using an isolated benzodiazepine.... at least in my personal experience.

I'm doing conscious sedation. Everyone talks about IVs but it sounds like I'm taking 1 pill the night before, one the day of, one before and some gas. No IV. Now I'm concerned I won't be as well sedated 😓
Everyone responds to the medications differently. In some cases patients can be more sedated with the oral meds than IV because they cannot be titrated. I think you will be surprisingly comfortable with those protocols and may be very groggy for several hours afterwards. That's one of the downsides to oral sedatives.

The drugs can start working REALLY quick. Some of the variables include the flow rate of the IV fluids, the catheter size, and the amount of medication administered. Just let your doctor know that you want to start feeling the meds ASAP. I've never had anyone jump out of the chair, but I also get in and get started right away and I never waste any time once the patient is in the chair. I know how anxious people can be! I find the day to day of being an oral surgeon to be hillariouse.You shoot em up with Fentanyl acting like "Hey we're here to chill, yeah, how you doing? Good? You wanna take a nap? Here's some more of that good stuff. Can you still remember your name? How about now? No? Ok good." Then you get to work with buzz-saws, picks, files, hammers and chisels making a gory mess of them, sew it back up and when they wake up again, "hey hey, that was fun right? No horrible pain? What no, I didn't say anything. Have a nice day"

What's crazy is I had all 4 wisdom teeth removed with just Novocain and I actually had ZERO recovery time. I bled for like 12 hours, but the very next day, I was able to eat normally again and I never once had to use any pain medication. I think my teeth were just super ready to come out or something.
It's actually not uncommon to get wisdom teeth removed with just local anesthetic. Even impacted teeth can be removed with just local. Sedation is an adjunct that makes it more tolerable. Also... no dentist uses Novocaine. That's an outdated term. It has not been used since the early 60's. We all use lidocaine or other derivatives from cocaine. Novocaine was phased out when lidocaine came along because Novocaine had too many adverse reactions. Just a fun fact everyone should know. We use the same stuff they do when you get stitches at the ER or dermatologist... 😉
I'm not entirely immune but my adrenaline takes over the drug as I have a severe anxiety disorder, do not fear though, call your insurance and ask for General Anesthesia
What do you mean by immune?
If you're Anxiety is incredibly severe, then the sedation will still work like a charm. You can be having a full blown panic attack, and the sedation will still relax you pretty much instantly, since it is getting injected straight into your vains. Your body will suddenly go into mellow land before 20 seconds go by.
Do you have to get the dental shot with being sedated or can you choose not to have the shot???
You don't 'have' to, but it makes the procedure more comfortable and helps the recovery process. I will say that if you're sedated you won't remember the shot anyway. So if that is your biggest fear and phobia, it will happen with no memory.
I was asking because everytime I get a dental shot in the upper teeth it makes me very dizzy and it feels like it has a stinging sensation in my max sinus and it makes me feel like I have a really bad cold like stopped up in my sinus and it has messed with my hearing that ear tubes won’t help me hear and each dental visit make it worse

I just got all 4 out and I was sedated this way. My bottoms were also extremely close to the nerve. The last thing I remember was them putting the wedge in my mouth and then I “woke up” and was ready to go in about 10 minutes. The thing that freaks me out is that we are technically fully conscious but have absolutely no recollection of the whole procedure. Thinking about it is weird to me

By definition if you're going into general anesthesia you will not respond to pain or feeling. You will be unresponsive to any actions like pulling, tugging, or the anesthetic being delivered.

jlt1984 Yes, people can snore while sedated. Snoring is the noise that is made when the relaxed muscles of the airway flap against each other as the air passes through the throat. The drugs that are given to cause the sedation can also can contribute to the muscle relaxation and thus increase snoring. Snoring is not ideal for sedation because it is also considered to be a form of airway obstruction.
I'm being sedated here in Scotland in a few weeks, conscious sedation. I'm scared because I have BPD and i don't want to say something embarrassing! Is that something that happens alot? Or do people just tend to laugh or stay quiet. I have a stressed out personality not relaxed.
First of all I want to say that I absolutely LOVE Scotland! It would be a dream to move there for a few years to live, teach, and work! But, back to your question. Everybody is unique under sedation. I don't see people saying weird things to me when they are at the right level of Conscious Sedation, otherwise known as moderate sedation. People who have stressed personalities will usually ask me during the appointment if they are doing okay. Some people will just sit there quietly and let the drugs do what they're good at, which is caused relaxation and anxiety relief. Yes, I do have some patients that laugh during the procedure, but those are usually people who are going into the appointment without any anxiety. They really enjoy the feeling they get while under the medications. You will feel the same thing oh, but your personality will still be stressed going into it. If you tell yourself to enjoy the ride, it helps make the drugs work a lot better. It's definitely a mind over matter when you go into the appointment. Once the drugs get into your system, they will do the rest to help you feel less anxiety. Brianna C sadly that is a common problem with many insurance companies. They only pay for the bare minimum and never what is best for the patient and the patient's needs. I hope you can overcome your anxieties and have a great dental appointment!
I got lucky. This dentist found a way around having to do iv sedation so my insurance will pay for it. He's Rxed me ativan, valium and hydroxyzine for when I have to have my root canals done.

Hopefully you will be either sedated or very numb so that your anxiety will be less. I agree with you, those are all the things that I hate the most about dentistry. Even as a dentist I am super wimpy when it comes to getting work done on myself and being the patient. It's one of my least favorite human experiences.

I had my surgery today and it went off without a hitch. The doctor put the IV in my arm, I began to feel a bit lightheaded and then the nurse put an oxygen tube up my nose, told me to breathe and I was out like a light. Next thing I knew I was in a wheelchair being rolled out to my mom’s car. Very groggy and sleepy of course afterwards.

My oral surgeon wants to do this, but I am too afraid of the side effects of the meds.
Jessyca Roy Landry what specific side effects are you concerned about? As a female one of the most common side effects that I experience from sedation should I undergo a procedure is nausea immediately after and during recovery. This however can easily be avoided if the surgeon uses little or no narcotics. A great thing to ask your surgeon ahead of time is if he could use less narcotics if nausea is the problem that you are concerned about. Staying under 50 micrograms of fentanyl is a great way to avoid nausea for females after surgery.

I have a history of dizziness/vertigo (I just don't want to feel that way induced by a drug, it would probably make me feel a bit of panic), and I also dislike not remembering. I have quite a small palate/mouth and I have had a lot of teeth removed in the past. I feel like I could do this with a local anesthesia or maybe with some laughing gas, but I don't know if I want the sedation per se. I'm basically afraid of the anesthesia feeling. :/ I also have mild hypermobility however and I've been told that I process local anesthesia quite fast.
Jessyca Roy Landry sedation is actually not "required" to take out wisdom teeth. It's a bonus to patients because they get memory loss and comfort, and its a bonus to the surgeon because they can work on you and not worry about "human" emotions and we make a little more money. If you're more comfortable doing it without sedation that's totally fine. I do wisdom teeth extractions all the time without sedation! Personally, I'm a wimp when I'm the patient. That's why I would choose sedation for myself. But if you're brave and don't mind the noises and pressure, you can do it without. It's YOUR choice, because it's your body.
Thanks Dr. Salatino, I appreciate your reply and empathy. My current oral surgeon says it's the only way he performs wisdom teeth removal. I understand the reasons why he does it and maybe being a oral surgeon myself I'd do the same thing! However, I'm more afraid of the anesthesia than the teeth removal, so you can understand I'm fighting some uneasiness :P Thank you again for your time. I really appreciate.
Jessyca Roy Landry find a different oral surgeon... Or a general dentist who does extractions. Don't be afraid to explore options. If you were local I would do it for you. Keep me posted!

I had an iv consciouss sedation for endoscopy 4 days ago and i was out of service, i thought it was a general anasthesia i had to ask the doctor when i woke up🤣🤣🤣🤣
Shit... molar extractions in us are far more agressive and invasive than other countries, why you guys dont use local anesthesia?

Im getting a full mouth restoration, all extracted, 6 implants up top and 6 bottom, 2 full zirconia arches. I will be having iv sedation.
Im slightly concerned i wont be able to accurately communicate any pain im experiencing during surgery. I might be able to answer when directly asked but i dont think i could form coherent enough sentences if i was in pain.
I seem to have a high tolerance to everything and often have issues with feeling intense pain during a dental visit, even after explaining to dentist. They never really believe me, until they all finnally do, usually after traumatising me a little bit more each time.
How was your surgery .. I’m going as well n I’m scared

The closer it gets, the more anxious I'm getting.

Her eyes should be able to open. This is conscious sedation which means that the patient's can communicate to us and respond to commands that we ask them. As the drugs begin to wear off the patient will loose memories of the event and may even have memory loss during the appointment. General Anesthesia is a deeper level of sedation where the patient will not respond to verbal commands and will not respond to painful stimulation. This is a level where the patient's eyes may remained closed during the entire appointment. The difference between these two levels of sedation can be difficult for some patients and even practitioners to understand.
Hello. What sedation did you use? I am considering IV but due to my extreme gag reflex. From all the youtube videos I seen, it seem IV may not be strong enough... Sorry worrying now as my wisdom teeth is aching...

Twilight sleep is a term that is reserved for deep sedation. This patient is at a level of Moderate sedation also known as Conscious Sedation.
The levels of sedation are as follows:
1. Anxiolysis (Anxiety relief)
2. Moderate Sedation (Conscious Sedation)
3. Deep Sedation
4. General Anesthesia
Im just scared that they are gonna open my mouth too far and overextend it which why i want my dumbass to be awake
selenator for life that's the beautiful thing about sedation, it's helps the muscles relax when your mouth is open. And despite what people think, the mouth doesn't need to be open all the way in order to get the teeth out. In fact, the top wisdom teeth come out easier when the mouth is almost closed all the way.

She is so putting on a show with that laughing. I've been under this before and I was conscious enough to be a show off for cameras if I knew they were there. It was so overdone and clearly forced to me.

No, we did not. Nitrous oxide, also known as 'Laughing gas' only works as long as you breathe it in. Once you stop breathing it in, the effects stop working. Notice there are no nasal hoods on the patient which deliver those gasses. The laughing is a result of her personality in conjunction with the anxiolytic medications.

According to this patient, she assumed she was asleep as well! The amnesia affect of the medications make people think they were asleep the whole time even though they were able to communicate if we required them to do so. If we doing dental work on this patient (stimulating her), she would quickly fall into a sleep.
