You MUST review their cover of Dance of the Sugar Plum Plum Fairy from The Nutcracker! That’s right! A song with no lyrics sung with no instruments = Grammy!

Love how you pointed out they end each section on the same note & then a purposeful pause. Kevin wrote this and Mitch said in an interview how very hard the whole group worked to get it exactly the way Kevin wanted it. Respect & work ethic for each other will take them far. They do the same for the fans! They’ve released an EP and LP and 10 music videos all during this pandemic! They certainly didn’t sit around and watch Netflix!!! Their next original album releases 2-12-2021!! We Pentaholics can’t wait! Thank you for including them in your music reviews❣️

I like what you said about the importance of a good mixer/engineer. One of the problems Pentatonix runs into during talk show and awards show appearances is working with people who don't know how to mix their voices. Usually the bass gets lost or one person is too loud.

    • @ellenhulslander2897

Agree. Or they assume one person has the lead thru the entire song, which rarely happens in their arrangements.😊

    Home Free: Tim Foust
    Voice Play: Geoff Castellucci

Those would definitely be the big ones in what were the a cappella bands (Pentatonix just dropped that distinction by releasing original song arranged with piano and cello accompanying. So they don't need a vocal bass anymore). I don't believe any of those mentioned are available however.

I'd like to see a specific reaction/analysis if possible. It's a performance I suggest a lot but with musicians it's even more interesting for me. Pentatonix "Silent Night". First of all, it's live. Second, they sing in a church so the acoustics it's fantastic. Last but not least, the arrangement it's pretty unusual, I think you would love it. Thank you.

I would love to see Jacob react to this one as well and hear his feedback.
Pentatonix’s “Silent Night” is my absolute favorite version of this song and in my top 5 of all their songs because of just how unique and beautiful the arrangement is, how they sound with the amazing acoustics of the church archway and just how intimate it is.

I appreciate how you pointed out the importance of a good sound engineer/mixer. This is definitely key with any musician especially an acapella group, and I believe has been integral in their success. Yes, their voices have a tamber that blends perfectly which is extremely difficult to do between just two people let alone five, however it would be difficult to translate that in a video or live concerts without their sound team.
(Side note: I’ve heard PTX sing within 6 feet of me at a meet and greet and it’s better than the sound engineers can capture, but they do an amazing job with the technology they have. And yes, the reverb definitely gives them a fuller sound.)
Another note is they do also switch up their sound crew when changing venues from arenas/concert halls/stadiums to outside amphitheater type venues. As you know there is a huge difference in how sound carries in these different venues. PTX has learned this over the years and have the best teams mixing for them depending on where they are performing. VERY IMPORTANT!!!

Keep in mind Kevin and Avi have been emersed in music their whole lives. The trio (Mitch, Scott,& Kirste, so beautiful,) have sung together for years. This is key because they know each other like a great sports team. Much love and keep on keepin on J.

In several of their early live performances, like on Good Morning America, they had some technicians that did not get how they do arrangements. They almost always pass the lead vocal around, but the techs assumed that Scott was the lead and always gave him the most boost. Now they have more clout, so I'd be willing to bet they use their own techs.
One really good live performance is "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen" on Jimmy Kimmel.

Avi is a basso profundo. He does have some insane low notes. However, he also has a higher register that he can sing in also. As far as other basses, there is a gentleman Tim Foust that sings with a group called Home Free. They are considered to be a country group but they sing everything from Jonny Cash to Boyz to Men to the Eagles plus some of their own songs. Another is Geoff Castellucci from VoicePlay. (Check our their Nightmare before Christmas song Oogie Boogie). I know there are others but those 3 are the top in today’s a capella music.
    lol

Avi has gone onto a solo career as a folk/Americana singer. You might really like it. It’s generally not highlighting his bass, though he does his own vocal bass. It’s totally different from PTX. I would try Change on the Rise, as a power ballad type song, and Fields and Peir, as a ohh, ahh, pretty...type song.

You can react to Avi Kaplan's (the bass) anytime.
He has several videos and audios on youtube.
He is also a polyphonic/overtone singer.
He stays more within the folk, Americana and western genera, but
he has a fabulous range and of course his vocal coloring/resonance cannot be outdone.
(1566) Avriel & The Sequoias - Fields And Pier (Official Video) - UA-cam
Kevin Olusola with PTX played his cello on this one.
Avi spent 6 years as the bass for PTX.
Say want you will, they are not as good without him.

Totally get what you mean by having a good front of house or studio mix Jacob - my brother's band's first album was done by a guy who was into vocals...so the bass/drums were mixed so far back it was stupid. The album sounded like a completely different band. It was remixed and released again the following year. It's true what they say that you're only as good as your front of house (for live balance) or the engineer for studio recordings. Great reaction once again Jacob -thanks

They definitely are very smart about working with the best of the best, including their sound professionals! Here is an article from one of their engineers on how their sound is treated. And, yes, it makes, a huge difference even in live performances - when they did "Daft Punk" for Italy's Got Talent, it was painful, especially when you put it next to a live, off-mic version ("Daft Punk private") they did that sounds so much better!

Hey, you’re great but two things... I swear to you they don’t record what they can’t sing live! I know it’s hard to believe, but they’re just that type of acapella band... authenticity incredibly talented! When they sing this song live with or without mics, it’s always so amazing and sounds the same! I do get what you’re saying about producers and mixers etc though. I understand that Pentatonix has them, and obviously uses them, I’m just saying they don’t use a lot. The studio versions of their songs just highlight the intricacies of their arrangements in my opinion. Idk, any Pentatonix fans can give your opinions on that, but those were just my thoughts 🤷🏾‍♀️ I think you’re awesome though man, I just wanted to let you know! 😁

@@JacobRestituto the best sound engineer in the business for a cappella is Ed Boyer.
He's always worked with PTX and most a cappella groups that are really good.
You can find an excellent interview online where he talks about his equipment, how PTX records, and how he mixes.
Very interesting and just points out how much more there is to a cappella than most folks know.
If you are looking for a good bass that isn't connected to another band already I would suggest checking out A Cappella Academy .
Avi Kaplan is a co founder and instructs there as well. Lots of excellent singers, writers, producers, instructors and technicians are coming out of that organization.
The bass and beat boxer in Citizen Queen came from there, and they are excellent.

That was how they started out but remember Avi was the only one coming out of a heavy a cappella background of several years. It was brand new to Scott, Kirstin and Mitch and Kevin hadn't used it because he was an instrumentalist and wasn't even aware that he could sing until he and Avi became roommates and he taught him. Probably as a side effect of Avi teaching Kevin overtone (polyphonic) singing for their rythmn section. Back then the disagreement was over whether it was legitimate to use a whistle instead of someone reproducing the sound with their voice.
