Thanks, saved me hundreds of dollars, almost $2k if I wanted to go through VW.
    A few notes:
You will need T6, T7, and T20 Torx screwdrivers, the T20s take the stereo out of the car, the T7 removes the casing, and the T6 is for the circuit board.
He also skips a few steps, presumably because it's hard to do them while holding a phone to record. Only one thing really stumped me for a few minutes until I figured it out:
When you get the part where you are removing the circuit board/screen from the outer casing, there are clips next to the SD card readers that you have to press in order to release the board. You CAN remove the SD cards as he says, but you do not need to. Still, I found it easier to just take them out as this made accessing the clips easier for both removal and replacement.
I spent in total about $25 dollars on this repair, and that cost included a $10 Torx screwdriver set.
Be sure not to overtighten the screws affixing the board to the screen as this will apply pressure to the screen and give you white spots on the screen while you're using it. It's annoying, because by the time you realize you tightened them too much, you've already plugged everything back in.

Thanks so much; I've just spent a good portion of a Bank Holiday Monday successfully repairing the screen on my partners 2016 Yeti with the help of your video. Not only does the head unit now work perfectly, the level of smug satisfaction I've got from fixing a thing properly is through the roof - she's already fed up with me prancing around the house like I'm the god of car audio repairs.

Brilliant cheap and straightforward fix. Been living with stations jumping about and the odd random calls for over 2 years now, but wasn't parting with £800 for new unit. Part came from Aliexpress in less than 2 weeks, 2 hours work this morning and working as new.
    Thank you....

Thanks for taking the time to post this. Really easy to follow. I have a Discovery nav (2017 California Beach ) with an ALPS chip set next to the SD Card reader. To remove the screen from the PCB I had to remove both the vertical SD card readers as there’s a small pressure clip on each that needed to be pushed to release the touchscreen. One other build - reset the head unit after reinstalling (on mine it was just pressing the power button and holding for 10+ seconds until the unit restarts. The new digitiser didn’t work until I did this.

Great job Duncan! I was offered a replacement unit by VW for $1700. That included 60% goodwill from them. In other words a new unit with instalation would cost about $4k. I decided for $1700 I'd be better off buying a 3rd party replacement unit -- until I saw your solution. Now after spending less than $20, I have a fully working unit again. Thanks for the clear instructions and the link to the touch screen vendor. WELL DONE MATE!

Duncan thank you so much for this, many little tips you gave helped massively . Just a couple of things that may improve.
    1. Remove the metal shroud totally which gives you almost the extra gap you need to double layer the digitiser.
2.If you follow no.1 then clean both pieces and use the sticky to glue then together.
When reassembled i did the screw up fully bit very minor torque and screen has no white spots or anything else and buttons do not rattle.
the only way you'd know it had been carried out was a slightly dimmer screen.
Once again many thanks , i ordered the same as you from aliexpress for my 6.5 and it came in 10 days and cost £8.50.😍

Thank you so much from Australia..
I learned from your video that the problem could be fixed cheaply and I immediately followed link to order the part from Aliexpress.
Local VW dealer quoted me AUS $3919 ( $3519 for parts and $400 service fee) to replace it for my 6 years old Caddy. Touch screen stopped working a year ago.
The touch screen arrived today from China after 2 weeks.
I also used another video from "neuromangler" for a lot more details in the repairing process.
I ended up spending AUS $20 plus 2 hours of my time. It is now working like a new one.
    Huge thanks!!! Duncan!

Strange how everyone’s digitiser goes on the right hand side, isn’t it? Mine too! Wouldn’t have dared to try tackling this without this video. Shame that at the critical bits the video stops and then restarts when the dismantling has been done. However, really useful to show you what you need to do and I understand that when you are trying to video what you are doing you can’t do both at once! Once you’re in there it’s quite self explanatory. A lot of little torque screws to remove but just take a photo at each stage and you’ll know which hole they need to go back in. A bit nerve wracking and of course you don’t know if it’s worked until you’ve put it all back together, but it did so well pleased. Thanks a lot Duncan. Keep up the good work!

Hey there - thank you very much for the guide. I ordered a new screen 9 days ago from your link below ($14 delivered to Sydney), it arrived today and took me 25mins to fit. Its fantastic to have control of my radio after 10 months since the touch screen failed. I've placed this one over the top without breaking into the screen unit like you (@ 5:35). The new screen comes with a glued edge and attaches to the alloy border on the old unit - I needed to remove the glue protection (paper) and place it accurately first time, no second chance. I can now use Android Auto again as was not possible to add a new android auto device without touching the screen (android auto/screen mirror selection) - that's been a major headache for a long time. I'd been quoted $3000+ for a new unit, or $800 for a stolen one with no security codes..... Duncan you're a legend sir.

Holey moley! Duncan, I can't thank you enough! The ghost touches / not at all responsive faulty original screen were driving me crazy for about two years, skipping tracks back and forth and dialing extra numbers while talking on the phone. My local dealer said all they could do was to replace the whole unit and quoted me €1100 just for a new unit, with additional labor cost etc. Then I stumbled upon some mail-in online offers, which still were ranging from €300-€450... I was almost willing to save up that money just to get a working touch screen again.
I recently got a new mobile phone - while my old phone always connected automatically via bluetooth the new phone hasn't been paired yet.
Even though it's possible to use the physical buttons to navigate to the bluetooth pairing mode and select a phone, the very last step to confirm a pairing code can only be done via touch screen - and the old one just wouldn't react at all (except for two spots in the very bottom left and right corner - but far away from the confirmation box).
Then, just by chance, this video popped up in my recommendations. I watched it, was very intrigued and mailed the same vendor that you linked to with photos of my unit and he pointed me towards the proper touch screen I needed. I also ordered some tools to remove the faceplate surrounding the radio unit. About 11 days later the new touch screen finally arrived - thanks to this video it was quite easy to follow the steps shown and just put the new touch screen on top - just as @pikey6258 described, I put the screen on the frame of the whole screen unit (not directly on top of the other touch screen inside the screen unit). Half an hour later I was back sitting in my car, really really excited and nervous if this will finally end the suffering of not having a fully functioning radio unit - but then it registered every touch right away and I could access all the menus I couldn't anymore before. It was such a relief!
I could also finally connect my new mobile phone, so listening to podcasts while commuting while be very convenient again!
So thank you again so so much!
Without this video I might have spent 12-15 times more money to get this fixed!
    You sir are awesome!

This video helped me out tremendously. A few notes for people that are doing this or about to:
    1. You do have to remove the SD card readers.
    2. When you are putting things back together, you do not need to put the metal shield back on the front of the display, this just adds extra girth with no benefit.
    3. DO NOT tighten screws all the way. Tighten them as lightly as you can. Tightening them too much will make the screen go white/light on the sides where the buttons are.
That last point can be an exercise in patience. Tighten, reassemble radio, test. Disassemble, loosen, reassemble and test again until you get it good enough for your liking. The buttons can be a little rattle-y if you leave the screws a little loose, but that I think is a good price to pay.
    Good luck guys!

Daniel in Nashville. 2017 VW Beetle vert. Took about 2.5 hours. Ordered the same screen off of ali Baba. Toughest part was getting the whole unit back in as there is little slack in the wiring harness. Note: Cleaned the original screen very well as there was a combination of grime and finger oil all around the edge once the metal frame was off. Wondered if this was cause of issue (right side of screen did not work, left- hit or miss) and if I could just clean it good and NOT put new screen over. Did put new screen over. All who do this need to also have a very clean environment. Clean the screens with sterile water and a microfiber, let dry, and try not to get anything between the two glass screens. I wore disposable plastic gloves and used a antistatic mat to keep things from sticking to the glass. Still, I found a tiny dust fiber in one corner after install and looking at it under a magnifier. Unit works though and wife is happy. This video NEEDS to be relabeled as "VW Discovery Media MIB2 faulty touch screen repair" and you will get a lot of hits. Thank you. Thank you Thank you! Also, separate issue, when I put the V 10 SD card in for navigation update, the screen says" This card has the navigation database. " Then: loading Navigation Database. Then there is a blue circle that spins round and does not stop. Have left for hours. Still just a spinning circle. Any clue as to how long it takes to update the navigation database? I saw a video of someone loading ad there is a progress bar displayed . I don't get that, just the stupid blue spinning circle. Anyone?

Super video. A little care and dexterity called for. Hardest bit was replacing plastic in car. £9.59 off ebay; skoda, vw etc are all the same. You pay more than double for the one labelled VW......obviously driving a VW means you're flush.

So if it looks like the same head unit as mine, it probably is.

Hi Duncan, thank you for putting this up, it really is brilliant. I have same issue with a skoda yeti. Could I ask you whether you cut off the ribbon cable from the non functioning screen or does it just 'hang about'?
I will be ordering the new screen shortly and was just concerned as to whether the old screen cable would still fit, even though it won't be connected.
    Many thanks.

    • @DuncanLaw
      @DuncanLaw Рік тому

Hi John, for the touch sensor on the VW head unit the cable is very thin. I just stuck it down with a bit of tape to stop it flapping about. If it got in the way though, it would have been trivial to cut with a pair of scissors.
Note that i'm not replacing the actual screen here but the transparent touch sensor that goes over the top of the screen. If it's actually the screen you are replacing, maybe you can take the old one out entirely? If it's the touch sensor the same as me, i think you'll probably get away with doing the same as i did.
If it works on the Yeti, make a UA-cam video about it. Seeing how helpful this one has been has been very satisfying.
      Good luck!

    • @DuncanLaw
      @DuncanLaw Рік тому

@@DuncanLaw it is the touch sensor that I'm intent on replacing, just like yours. Its a very similar unit, mine only having one sd slot and no navigation capability. I suspect I need to pull it out to find the model to get the correct touch sensor. Thank you so much for replying.

    • @DuncanLaw
      @DuncanLaw Рік тому +1

@@johnbamford203 So mine was labeled with a part number for the whole display. Not just the touch sensor. That did allow me to find a compatible touch sensor though. You can actually see it at time 6:44 of the video. Hopefully yours is the same.
You can also see at that time where i've taped the cable of the old touch senor to the back of the screen with a bit of double sided tape and the new one is still free.

So dashboards are held together with stiff clips. It looks like it's all one piece but it isn't. In my van I was able to get my fingers under a bit of trim and popped the first clip. Try anywhere that looks like a groove or 2 different types of plastic meet. I think the proper tool is made out of stiff plastic so it doesn't scratch. Once the first clip is open the rest are easier, partly because you know you are on the right track.
Try looking online for information on your model of car. Every model is going to be different.
