PATRICK MACNEE WISHES HE'D ASKED DIANA RIGG TO STAY ON "THE AVENGERS"

  • Before “The Avengers” were known as superheroes, they were British secret agents played by Patrick Macnee and a string of female co-stars. He told me in 1992 that his favorite was Diana Rigg, though she wasn't the co-star he hit on. (Rigg currently plays Olenna Tyrell in “Game of Thrones”)

Tara King straight out of stage school..... was enticing but they all had their own qualities, OK Dianna was in colour too, who was the boyfriend, must look that up but at the TIME the public assumes they were all `at it`..some were, I believe the old barn corner elstree road was used by some stars..I played there a few times, the rooms upstairs had actors names on them..last we played thrre the dwim pool was mentioned..hygene wise, but when they DID finally rebuild the building with all its glass..I wont forget the previous years we went there, the old wood..the swim pool WAS used in many location shots for ITC studios up the road..why does Peter Wyngarde come to mind..early days MGM was there too..I was told you could see the castle set from the road but I guess...all rebuiolt on..and I`m sure the celeb squares we saw recorded was off what is now Studio Way..I saw Kenny Everett drive off and didnt shout.. he did the voice overs, happy days but tv and film making was...not a steady regular job, I knew a rigger who worked for both when we played at the boreham wood legion later on, but MAYBE if you went in as tea boy or runner, who knows..

That's so refreshingly respectful of him, I salute your memory sir. I think that created such a bond between them, seeing her as Mr's Peel she is to die for.

@Peter B Very well said! As much as I loved Diana, there was something about Linda that drew me to her. Since grade 2 ( I'm 58 now ), " Tara" was my favorite because she truly was an " under dog". Her expertise was " finding anything handy" to use as a weapon. I also preferred her fight scenes, as she was a " brawler" who took as much as she gave. The writers did her a great injustice I always felt.

I think they were perhaps the most ideal TV couple ever, the perfect Yin & Yang.
I doubt there's anything Patrick could've done to dissuade her from leaving. The producers never even offered her any royalties, even after her enormous success on the show. I also read, that the mainly male crew for some reason hated her. I don't know why and it's something I wish I had the answer to. Perhaps they viewed her as haughty off-screen but she wanted to branch out and do other things, and didn't want to be known only as "Emma Peel" for the rest of her life, though she's still best known for that, at least in the U.S.

Diana Rigg loved the Avengers but, according to interviews she gave, left after 4 series because she feared she would be so identified with Emma Peel it would seriously limit her future choices. She was a classical and Shakespearean stage actress first. I have always heard it said Honor Blackman had to leave in order to star in Goldfinger and have always wondered if Rigg left for pretty much the same reason, to commit to the Bond movie she was offered, On Her Majesty's Secret Service.

Probably tainted as being the only one (I think) in which there's genuine romance - rather than just sex (nothing against sex of course!), and the "girl" dies. If Diana Rigg had done one more series, until 1968, Alexandra Bastedo would have replaced her in the Avengers. Alexandra B was in 'The Champions' in 1966-67 and became famous just too late to be selected to take over from Diana. Had Diana left one year later than she did Alexandra would have been a shoo-in to take over. One can only dream of an Avengers series with Patrick Macnee and Alexandra Bastedo.

Every time they would get a 'pittance' of pay, back then, Lorne would try to cajole Patrick into giving some of Pat's $ to him, to invest in a fledgling company. Patrick would always, politely, decline. Patrick said, to me, that when Lorne went off to Hollywood, for that "silly Bonawnza thing"(trying to get his accent) that Lorne was doing 'quite well'! The issue with the pay was during her first (b&w) series, it was increased in her contract for her second series. In recent interviews she indicated that she just wanted to move on from the role, it was getting too formulaic. Many top British actors feel the need of a challenge to keep their performances fresh. Her first love was always the stage rather than TV or films. How many other (inadvertent) TV sex symbols have played Shakespeare, sung in Sondheim musicals and won a Tony for a classic Greek tragedy?
