The trick with the G80 is when it locks in you need to keep the torque applied or it disengages and you have to start all over again. Maintain a crawl speed, or greater, and it will stay locked it. Soon as you let off the gas or stop , you’ll have to spin it up all over again. Would be great if you could show it camera.
Wouldn't that be a limited slip then? Makes no sense when it's advertised as locking differentials.
@Golden Trichomes Hydro no, search UA-cam on how the G80 works. A limited slip never fully locks and only transfers some power, and relies on the clutches to slip. The G80 while having clutches uses a mechanical locking mechanism that fully locks the axles together, but it will only stay locked with load applied.
Yeah if you've ever driven a Toyota with ATRAC (yes I know it's a very different system) you kind of want to run the G80 the same way, smooth, consistent throttle with just enough to get over the obstacle. With both systems you get better with them the more you use them and understand the input they need to do their thing.
@k0pper There is a bunch of older TFL videos where Andre and Nathan use too much throttle and can ever get the G80 to lock. Then Tommy crawls right up thlse Razor rocks no problem in the old TFL Trailboss, he figures out how to use it.
Thanks! I’ve looked all over the internet and UA-cam to find out how the G80 unlocks and when. Unfortunately, there are some situations where you don’t want it to lock, but you can’t control that with the G80.
That is a sexy ass truck! For the average person, this AT4 is more than capable to do anything you’d ever need. I love it.
My 2019 Tacoma would've gotten through that cleaner, even with only 31in tires, simply because it has the switchable locker the AT4 lacks.
That tire may say AT on it but it's definitely at the bottom of the barrel looks more like an all-season to me that would be the first thing to go if I owned it.
GM doesn't seem to understand that, everything comes with a Goodyear at but the Trailrunners they use on the SUVs and these qualify as an at as an afterthought at best.
@@desertsavagery GM understands just fine. They selected these tires based on rolling resistance because the EPA rating is a big deal in order to meet CAFE requirements.
Good thing for another 400 you can order the MT tires from the factory which are much more aggressive than the default tires.
Yes I like what this package has to offer but I can’t get passed the wheel tire combo. But don’t like the price of the X. Idk I like these over other midsize options mainly bc the Colorado looks like a 16 plus trd offroad Tacoma to me
If I remember correctly from the GMC site, the Territory MTs are available on this for a $500 upcharge. Definitely worth it to me. These are just the base model tires.
When will these car companies learn lockers instead of all this fancy stuff. They spend all this money on fancy options give us simple lockers
Yeah and let us use them when we want. I should be able to use my rear locker in 2wd.
They have the AT4X and ZR2 both with 2 lockers, but I agree at least 1 locker should be available on lower trims
Electronics are cheaper to make!
@@disophisis my ranger have this option.
@@disophisis ZR2 or AT4X are the trucks for you
Absolutely mind-blowing performance by the 2023 GMC Canyon AT4!
Needed a tire and driver mod.
You have to keep torque applied or the G80 will unlock. Driver is constantly getting off the throttle. Left foot braking will keep it engaged too.
You guys are doing a great job with the off road stuff. Some of the other "test pilots" were getting stale with some predictably mediocre flashes of "humor" thrown in. Less is better when it comes to banter and emotion during some drives since it's all about the truck anyway. I'll make the same offer as I gave to Stephen and the guys at Truck King, if you ever get anywhere near Binghamton NY, put a few hours aside and test ride some of my 4wd atv's and a mix of Honda and Yamaha atc's. Keep up the great work.
The new GMC Canyon looks sooo good! Definitely a very handsome truck! I would love to see a side by side with the new Tacoma trd pro since they’re both wider trucks. Other than that great video guys 👍🏼😁
Sadly the new tacoma isn't any wider. They just back space the wheels further out and add wider fender flares which is the worst way to do it. That just ruins the steering geometry. The front wheels don't turn on the axis they arc outside of the fulcrum.
I like the camera presence you guys have! I’ll watch more videos with y’all. But, for the love of god, spend the extra time to air down. 38 PSI for an Offroad test with AT tires just isn’t fair! Can’t wait for the AT4X video! (I’ve got one on order!)
Good job Alex and Kase. You 2 make a good tag team. Kase I like your input also even though you are behind the camera. Kase, you see things from the outside that Alex cannot see.
Actually a big fan of the G80. All mechanical, nothing to go wrong. You use a locker so seldom, might as well have one that always works. Just gotta keep your foot in it so it doesn't disengage
If you stop letting off the gas the locker will stay in gauged and you will stay smooth but it would be nice to have the selectable locker I would agree but you made it look harder than it would have been if you would have just stayed in the throttle
engaged, but ok lol
@@lunamaria1048 Apparently they have spell checker "desinguaged" 🤣(as the red line appears under that mis-spelling)
It is very frustrating to watch you guys off-road. Every time the G80 locks-in you back off the throttle - wrong, stay in it. When you back off it disengages and you have to start over again. Like any novice, you’re giving the G80 a bad name. The G80 works fine, if you know how it works - get it locked in and power through, don’t let up…. The G80 has been around for years because it works at any speed, in any gear, 2WD or 4WD, no buttons to push, simple and cost effective. A little tire spin is fine, get it locked and stay in the throttle.
He knows, he said at about 2:28
Thanks for the vid! Been waiting for someone to take one off-road!
I love Andre but he gets too stressed out on those rocks. Roman does too. So better to send the young bucks. Also I wish these videos were longer guys!!! Do longer trails or more than one while you're up in the high country!
Great video guys keep up the work , luv it !!!
Nothing screams quality like plastic skid plates lol... regardless, very capable, very nice truck
This was a great video and you two make a great team. I like the dialog between both the wheelman and the cameraman.
Great Job Alex!! You Andrea and Tommy do a very good job!
Have you guys ever tested these off-road trucks loaded and off-roading? Would love to see one with a pop up camper or 1200lbs in the bed 👍.
Thats one good-looking truck!
Good video guys! Glad to see you guys out on the off road channel making content as well! I wish they at least made that rear locker selectable…and I know you said you didn’t have the time, but I’d suggest bringing a compressor and making a few extra minutes to air down…at least a little. It doesn’t just improve the ride, but primarily will help immensely with traction. Great video tho! Keep it up! Hope you guys get to take an AT4X up there next to compare.
you guys should do a comparo with all the midsize offroad packaged trucks, Ranger, Canyon, Tacoma, Frontier, gladiator, and see which is best value for money and most capable
I'm sure they will once they can get their hands on all the new ones
I feel like I’d rather take something like a Frontier Pro-4X as you have a selectable locker on that, and a much more protective stock skid plate arrangement.
It's amazing how far 4×4's have come in such a short time. I had a 1996 F150 4×4 with a 3 inch lift & 33×10.5×15 tires on it & it wouldn't stand a chance against the new trucks of today. Great job on the review guys. 👍🏻👍🏻
Your F-150 would do better than you think against modern trucks. Especially if you've added an aftermarket locker or two. I would put a 90s 4x4 with an ARB locker against any modern truck
Your will take more abuse by far though 😂
If you have a 3 inch lift and 33s, if you get a rear locker, you will be leagues better than most stock trucks.
People say we are in the Golden Age of automobiles and I believe it now, its the next 1960s.
12 years ago, I owned an '87 Bronco with the 300-6, 4-speed w/31-10.50s. Open diffs. That granny-low 1st gear was a game-changer off-road. It was almost like a tractor. Best off-road vehicle I've ever owned. I'd love to find another.
Reducing the tire pressure would have helped this guy out too, dropping it down to about 20 psi
I used to crap on the G80 until I realized my truck had it. Part of the reason I didn’t think I had it was due to it being a seem less transition. Not sure why the new ones are jumpy
Thanks for helping clean up!👌🏽
I'd be curious to know how the automatic locker engages if you were to use a little bit of break at the same time you're using gas. Thinking that might help control a lurch forward
Great job getting up razor rocks Alex. I didn't think it would do it.
Great review!
Great job! I love the truth and dare challenge, essential! Now add some water fording segments please 🙏🏽
The AT4 can be optioned up better for off roading. There are optional skidplates available and you can take a 33 inch Territory MT tire option to help with traction and more ground clearance. Still no switchable locker though, unlike it's Toyota equivalent the TRD off road Tacoma, and it looked like the TC wasn't torque vectoring up front very much (Toyota MTS torque vectors pretty aggressively up front in rock or loose rock mode)
Great job! I did not think that truck would make the razor rocks. I still remember that time with a 4Runner and a selectable(sp?) locker and that tree! Not good. Obviously, tire grip and sideways slip come into the equation, more so when not airing down. As for that G80, pros and cons. Y'all probably think I am crazy mentioning the pros. But I had one in an 83(!!!!) S10 Blazer, and though it was a rattle trap, that thing was an amazing little off roader. Pros: cheaper. Super reliable with an incredibly long history. Always going to kick in and then it becomes a 100% mechanical locker. No switches or compressors to worry about. Those are also very reliable, but let's face it, just more things to go wrong. The major con: well, you demonstrated that repeatedly. Probably/maybe better for the mud pit than for slow rock crawling. Oh, did I say it already? Cheap!
I avoid the "con" by getting the G80 locked up ahead of the terrain I need it for. I find a section of road with dirt or mud, goose the throttle enough to break the rear tires loose, and now the G80 is locked up and stays locked up as long as I don't exceed 30 mph or drive in reverse.
I went to build a zr2 online and it said see dealer for tpms. Are they not coming from factory with them? If so that is dumb considering the air down feature built in to the trail boss and zr2.
Good looking truck and like thar color. Reminds me of my first Trek front suspension fork mountain bike in the 1990's.
Nice video Gents & love your hat! Go Birds!
I think this off roading demodtration would of been a lot smoother wirh an experience driver. This truck is really good looking, I would definitely add the Technology package it comes with 360 cameras and also definitely will pay extra for the skid plate package.
Everything is based on numbers and specs, all these videos are based on such short use. Curious to see how all the screens will hold up in 5+ years. GM did a solid job on the look. Those tires were pretty pumped it looked as well
I just bought mine same truck silver love it to death
nice looking truck and great review, should come with Goodyear MT territory tire. the AT tire doesn't seem to be aggressive enough. Lot of plastic skid plates too.
Youre my Hero Mr Alex😂😉! As Ive said before the 2 of you together are ALWAYS Super fun watch! Beyond the visual🍬😂. Your personal facial expressions, coupled with distinctive laugh. Is just entertainment gold! Plus the content information! - my husband after watching you all(u both)tfl truck/offroad. So WANTS a Jeep(🤮such a cliche). He wants to know Where is this? Yes CO, when we're there as he smirks with a Pink Wrangler😂. We will go
Great video guys. Hoping y’all can get ahold of one of those AT4Xs at some point. I wouldn’t trade my Gladiator for one, but damn they look good.
When it kicks in though you gotta keep going, not let off every single time.
Nice to see you guys on a real trail. The ranch is a little dull.
The AT4 is my #2 choice, waiting to see what the Tacoma TRD has for options and price once that trim and specs are revealed. Trailhunter and TRD Pro are overkill for my mission, as is the AT4X. Great vid guys keep them coming!
This looks nicer than the Taco IMO
The new 2024 Tacoma coming out later on this fall has good looking body style compared wirh this year's 2023 tacomas.
I actually really liked this truck, but the wheels are pretty ugly, and the cost/wait and potential reliability issues after 5-10 years of ownership is what made my decision for the Nissan pro4x. Isn't it 25lbs of boost?? Imagine that at 100k plus miles. Lol plus I got a real looker for about $6k less.
wonder if this will get more off road and bottom skid plates down the road
excellence dudes!
Good enough for me to pull the boat out of the water with as I looked at the new Colorado's and they just feel cheap on the inside.
My ‘05 Land Rover LR3 with the e-locker in the rear locks IMMEDIATELY after sensing wheel slippage. Really surprised it takes so much for this almost 20 year more modern truck to sort it out.
What fool would spend 50k for this beautiful truck and jump ditches and climb rocks ???
I get mine in a few weeks I got fully loaded. I got the same tires but u said 18inch wheels? Are they 33s? I can't tell with the just sidewall numbers
These are 31's but there are 33's available as an option. If you fully loaded it, your truck will have the Territory MT 33's.
I wish they would color match the truck on the info screen with your paint code. It’s a little thing that would go a long way in the pride of your truck.
Agreed. Seems like that could be an ota update, if color lcd’s are in there.
Agree as well, I thought GM would get away from the Toys-R-US look from previous generations on the main screen or home page
Super good looking truck
How do we get a little competition going, up these trail's... Maybe time each make and model up the trail? Cause most of these make it up the trail lately....just a thought...Im addicted to the channel either way🙏...have a beautiful Sunday everybody ✌️
Every Canyon gets the high output motor. It’s the Colorado that gets different power levels.
Is this the 2024? Cause it's going on June 2023 and I haven't seen a single Colorado nor Canyon on the road yet. Only place I've seen them is on youtube.
Alex and case taking lines that Roman or Andre wouldn’t dare 😅 Let these guys loose more often!
My favorite thing about the video is the Eagles hat. Go Philly.
For about the same money and options you can get the ZR2 which is allot more truck for off-roading if you don't need Cadillac style interior. The AT4 should have standard "E" rear locker and I think a big swing and a miss for GMC just giving it the G80.
AT4X is equivalent to ZR2 but better. G80 is a locker that is automatic. No electrical glitches that can go wrong causing it to not engage like an electric e locker.
@@CarnutMM I've had a few trucks with the G80, I'd rather have the "E" locker. Never had a issue with my JK Rubi or JT Mojave "E" lockers and the ESP+ works pretty good on the Mojave front open diff when your climbing rocks. AT4 should offered the "E" rear locker as at least an option. The G80 if for sure better than no locker but not as good as a true locker. I had a clutch pack go out in a Z71 Tahoe but it saw plenty of use and had about 160k when it started have unlocking issues.
I've heard it described well as a guy that wears his hat backwards drives a Chevy and a guy that wears his hat forward drives a GMC.
LOL...that's a great analogy@@rockymtnlovelander
And need some spotters on these conditions .. as soon i saw the scene with that 1foot ½ rock i knew he will jack up that truck by that angle
I think its a good truck. The driver just doesnt know how to handle those rocks 😅
If you deflate the tires (or "air them down") you will have significantly more traction = less wheelspin. Assuming that your normal road pressure is about 35 psi, I wouldn't do this terrain with more than 20 psi max. In fact, I'd probably do 15 psi - on an empty vehicle. With a load you're probably going higher pressure.
Remember, an ounce of traction = a pound of momentum.
If that is a Torsen type limited slip, you can brake lightly with your left foot as you are applying the gas when you get wheel spin, and it should send power to the tire with traction. I just looked up the G80 and it works on centrifugal force opening up a mechanism that catches and locks the diff when wheel spin gets to 120 rpm rather than the locking spiral gears used in a Torsen type diff. Torsens were used in the old Hummers. So never mind about the left foot braking. The G80 does have a rather sudden lockup so it would be impossible to engage it smoothly.
For the guys that have experience with the G80 it's pretty easy to use it. Before reaching terrain where tires lift off of the ground, you can lock it simply using the throttle. Let's say you're driving on dirt, give the truck enough throttle to break the rear tires loose, causing the locker to lock. Now that it's locked and as long as you don't exceed approx 25-30 mph or drive in reverse, the G80 will remain locked. Now you don't have the jarring lockup that they complained about.
Yeah. That's a great way to engage it,however when you reduce power/throttle, it will disengage, until wheel spin again, and on and off it goes. I have had them, and still do,currently 2010 Tahoe. Much prefer a quality limited slip, like Aurburn or air locker.
@@capesquirt the g80 only unlocks if you either reach speeds greater than ~30mph or you drive in reverse. Letting off the throttle doesn't unlock it.
@@hochhaul the video your commenting on is proving you wrong...
@Henry Strater the video you are watching is heavily edited and the driver is using poor technique. I have owned more vehicles with a G80 than I care to admit. I know how they fcking work you dunce. Once it's locked it's fcking locked until you drive fast enough to unlock it or you drive in reverse. Sometimes that makes a G80 a PITA when you want it to unlock (winter driving in town) and there are limited opportunities to drive fast enough or drive in reverse to get it unlocked. Letting off the throttle does NOT unlock it.
In my large circle of friends and family I only know 1 couple that can comfortably afford these new cars, 50k plus, without making major sacrifices to their lifestyle or financial health and the husband is a firefighter and the wife a nurse.
Great looking truck. But the G80 is so outdated now. Seems like the G86 in the new Yukons activate a lot quicker
Where is Nathan ???
I had G80 in my 2015 2WD Colorado, hated it! I'm very surprised that GM hasn't installed the over-ride button, so you can luck it when you want it, not when the truck thinks you need it
It’s not electric. You HAVE to spin a wheel for the centrifical force to move a counterweight in the differential to “lock” the two axle shafts together.
Have to disagree. The G80 in my 2WD 2015 Canyon helped pull my boat up some sketchy boat ramps over the years. Of course, 4WD would have been better, but it worked fine for me.
@@AO-mx9tk - Well the scenario that you describe is one of the cases where it does work, a straight-line pull after some initial wheelspin to activate lockup. It does not work well in any kind of slow crawling work, which is where a selectable locker is superior. And you can lock it on the ramp before you start your pull and save a little right rear rubber.
GO BIRDS 🦅
yea the "auto" locker is sort of lame in the way you have to get tires spinning for it to kick in but its better than nothing and will get you unstuck
Im really impressed by the autolocker. That is a real off-roader by virtue of doing that rock climb, out of the box. imagine what real off road tires could do. But why not a button that just engages those aoto lockers ASAP so there's less slipping--- only 1% would use it, but...
The G80 is designed for street and offroad. With it locking automatically in whether in 4x4 or 2wd makes it the all around option for less than super serious offroaders. In the snow or partially slick roads it kicks in before someone could even reach for the switch plus a lot of electric offroad selections only allow it for 4low which sucks.
Looks good maybe if you swap out tires you won’t struggle as much
Pretty sad performance to have the AT4 badge on it and $50K. I replace the G80 on two of my GM vehicles with helical LSD. The G80 needs a lot of RPM from the loose tire to engage, and tire RPM is not something you're getting in the low range. I have also blown one up when engaged with a lot of power. Only good for snow.
Dang near my perfect truck, just needs proper AT tires or even MT. If it had the 3.0l diesel it’d be the Absolute perfect truck
idk i needed tommy doing this review
Why did they do away with the hood struts?
"Auto-locker" and those tires which are designed for road use and the highest possible mpg count to slap on the window sticker doesn't make for a great combination
Also no weight on that rear bed making it even more difficult to find traction
Pit Vipers would’ve made it smoother for you ;), jk prob some better tires would help. People who leave trash suck, but at least it wasn’t a Bud Light.
NIce part is, better tires are an option box away. The AT4 can be optioned with the same 33in Territory MTs that the Trail Boss gets.
That truck is too pretty to bang it up on rocks..good review
My colorado came with 33s, they would make this trail much easier for this canyon
The AT4 has those same 33s as an option, along with better skidplates, but their test truck lacks those options.
Love the hat Alex
If you know how to control your foot rhat woild go just fine. Experience is key as well
Not having lockers come standard on these insanely expensive trucks is ridiculous. My wife has a 2022 Colorado 4x4 with no lockers and it was $40k cash without a dealer markup.
Great lookin truck. If I could get a 2020 for 28k, whew
My local kingsport,tn chevy/ gmc dealer has a 2023 canyon At4 coming in soon from factory
Think I will go test drive it and possibly trade in my 23 Tacoma TRD OR model truck onnut. I hate the gear hunting and poor lower seating position in my new Tacoma.
But I also want to test drive a new 2024 Tacoma TRD Trail Hunter model truck with the new turbo 4 cylinder engine and new 8 speed transmission. That truck would be perfect for overland8ng all in the eastern tennessee/ western nc/ southwestern Virginia/ eastern kentucky and North Georgia mountains.
How about checking it's "limit" with the off road tires it's optioned with? All Terrains just slip on rocks. This one is equipped for a mall crawl. lol...
Such good looking trucks however lots of lemons for first year release
You need to just commit to smooth throttle and not let off by reflex and the G80 works wonders. It becomes new muscle memory☺️
Alex when do we get to see your truck off road?
"All terrain tires" 😂 literally a highway tire with a slightly aggressive sidewall design.
Could you compare this to the Trailboss?
Add the optional 33in tires and extra skidplates (AT4 has both as standalone options) and it will be virtually identical to the TB, just with a lot nicer interior.
@@mrvwbug4423 Trailboss still has both of those optional as well.
GM was making these auto lockers in the 80s/90s that would rip itself apart when it locked in place, made a lot of money replacing those
I was doing maintenance on my G80 and saw that the small activation gear was beginning to break up. I replaced it with a Trutrac and it has worked well for fifteen years.
Thats probably a good idea, if the new design locks it into place suddenly when the other wheel spins i can see them still blowing up like they used to.
We wont even see the AT4X/ZR2 till 2024 at this point. My ZR2 has been bumped from May to July, so bumped a few times with no hope in sight.
It'd help if the G80 could be forced to lock ahead of time while still having auto locking ability.
Fly Eagles, FLY!
Will be happy to see if the AT4X or ZR2 have any issues
They're GM products. Of course they'll have problems.
Where is this trail
10:20 kill all litterbugs!
congrats on the promotion
