Excellent review, better than most 'professional' review sites where they simply run through the features without any details or insights. Your insight into the significance of touch screen, especially changing the focusing point when using the viewfinder, is spot on. Your review also points to the state of innovation in Canon/Nikon vs Panasonic. Just look at the improvement in the T4i vs T5i (essentially nothing) or the D5100 vs D5200.
Ralf, can you use the EVF to record movies? That is one thing that I really want in a camera, so that I am not stuck trying to look at the LCD screen in bright sun. I love my DSLR (Nikon D7100), but it's very difficult to manually focus in bright sunlight for movies because it is so difficult to see using the LCD screen (and the viewfinder is blocked out when the mirror is up). Thank you for these reviews, they are very informative and really help me with decisions.
Hello, I wanted to ask you what settings do you use for to get good focus. I make my videos with the G6 but i struggle with focus sometimes. I have tryed different settings. Thnx for the video
Nice review, very helpful! I may buy one this year as well, but with this video being 2 years old... Perhaps there is a new version coming up soon. Currently I am using the Lumix FZ48, love this camera but it is not giving the high grade pictures I want. It could be because I am not a expert at all and definitely do not know the fine details of this camera. So it's fair to say that I may have the settings set to the wrong things. I will however need a new camera though, I want to produce high grade photo's that are also in big sizes so that I can get the best ones printed on high quality photo paper and hang them on my wall. (or sell them)
MrSonicAdvance Of course you can! The static this camera gives is rather bad. Specially in cold weather (winter, fall and early spring) it even gets worse. You can see the photo's I made here: sig442.deviantart.com/ And see my youtube for video's recorded with this camera. This camera can't seem to handle too cold weather and it can mess up pretty much any photo or video. Besides the static on photo's and video + cold weather problem this FZ48 camera is a fair camera. Focusing on flowers for example needs a lot more time then with other camera's as well. But that last bit is a minor problem.
SIG442 I see what you mean. The duck photos I look at are well-lit and in focus, but when you enlarge them, they are quite noisy. The G6 will be a big improvement on that. One caution though: to get the sort of focal length flexibility the FZ48 gives you is going to be expensive with the G6, as the lenses aren't that cheap. If you chose the FZ48 because your budget wouldn't stretch to the FZ150, beware the price of m43 lenses. I've found, and I'm being VERY picky and critical here, most of the m43 zooms (and my DX Nikon zooms too, for that matter) to be a little soft, considering the money being asked for them. (I will admit I've not tried anything beyond the kit 14-45mm, but I've looked on DP Review) So I suggest that if you want the best sharpness value, go for prime lenses. I've found the Panasonic 20mm f1.7 to be excellent, and the Sigma 60mm f2.8 is also great. If I might make a suggestion, the Panasonic G2 is VERY cheap now (and the G5 is rapidly dropping in price). Both are excellent, the G5 more so, but you might be able to pick up a G2 for around E175, which would be a cheap way of getting into m43 and free up cash to spend on the all-important lenses. Alternatively, why not look at one of the DSLRs without an anti-alias filter, if you want amazing sharpness? The Nikon D3300 might be worth looking at. Goo luck! :-)
MrSonicAdvance The duck photo's were made in a local park where there is hardly a tree. There is no money pumped into this park so it's rather boring there and fences and benches are in serious disrepair. These ducks may start to get used to me, they come closer each time I visit, which is a good thing since the FZ48 is only getting worse if you have to use it on distance with it's zoom. The idea is to buy prime lenses indeed. I may need to save up a lot to get them but it will be well worth the effort in the long run. That is why I was aiming to get the DMC-G6W which comes standard with 1 lens extra. I however am new with buying lenses so I have no idea whether they are any different from each other haha. Think the second one is for longer distances? Lens 1: LUMIX G VARIO 14-42mm / F3.5-5.6 ASPH. / MEGA O.I.S. Lens 2: LUMIX G VARIO 45-150mm / F4.0-5.6 ASPH. / MEGA O.I.S. But yeah, I may need to get a slightly cheaper camera instead and buy the good and expansive lenses that will be needed for it. I have a feeling end of this year there will be a new model based on the G6, if that's true it may drop in price soon as well. Although I am not sure what to pick at this time. What about the DMC G5WEG-K that I just spotted on the Panasonic website? Comes with similar lenses as that G6 as well. Would that be a good one?
The G5 is great, and arguably better built than the G6, It's hard to know what to advise, really. Have a look on DPReview which allows you to compare image quality. www.dpreview.com/reviews/studio-compare
would you recommend this over a 700D? i wanna buy a camera good for pictures and videos, good videos. so several people told me to buy the lumix g6. strangely i found the 700D for less money that the G6. so what do you think? is this camera comparable for video and photos to a 700D?
I just purchased this camera...mostly for semi-professional videos....Great review! It was very helpful. Thanks!
Thanks Ralf, your calm and detailed review is so helpful and in such contrast to the children's reviews with lots of music and little information

very helpful!! Excellent run through of the functions and features! Many thanks
Thank you for your review Mr. Ralfs!
I can only agree with @Shu-Fei Chia;excellent and it is obvious that you have got to know the camera the way you use it.Thanks.
Fantastic explanation!
Thank You!
thanks for the review - I really enjoy your video reviews.
How does G6 compare with the GX7?

Great review Ralf, as always.
Great review, thanks for the time you took to make it :) Do you think a person would be missing LOADS of features if they bought this over the GH3?

Can you get Clean HDMI out from this camera? I just want to use it for streaming. I do not want to record what I stream on the camera itself.
I love this camera~!!
Excellent... fully enjoyed your GH3 review too..
Book marked you ;)
Super!Good day!
😀👌📸👍🍀👁️☀️👆
Nice review. Think I should sell my Canon t4i and get the G6?
great video thank you really helpful
Helpful review Ralfs
But thanks for giving all of the world an English version
Cool review!

SIG442 Can I ask what you are unhappy about with the photos from the FZ48?

Awesome Review!!!
Thanks for nice review :)
IS in camera?? .
do you know how long in time can be video record? I know some cameras have a 29 minutes limit. I need one that can record up to 1 hour,
75-150 minutes :)
can i fit a an tokina 11-16 on this?

The videos of the G6 are much better. You have 1080p 50 fps and continuous and fast autofocus.
Hey I'm in a similar boat as you.torn between 700d and the lumix. Just wondering how you got on
Adam Hussain i then bought the G6
That good from you this is my first step in Panasonic in HONG KONG
