For those who don't know "Robert" is a bird that's mother laid its egg in the nest of another bird and this egg will hatch before the others and then push the other eggs out of the nest to either get eaten by a fish or break on impact so the imposter gets all the food and the other birds parents don't even realize anything is wrong even though the imposter is three times their size
Long stort short, he's a Cuckoo. What's even more interesting, imo, are the strategies some songbirds have evolved that help them tell their legitimate offspring apart from Cuckoos and other brood parasites.
Some birds have actually evolved to combat this and will kill the imposters or break the imposters eggs. They recognize them by markings on the eggs or markings inside the chicks mouth. However the imposters have also evolved to mimic the markings of their prey in a kind of evolutionary arms race. They would do anything except take care of their own kids.

They usually have chirps and coloring that tricks the instincts of the parent to feed them more often. Also, if any host children survive. They'll also try to smother and steal food from any surviving nestmates. Some can even get aggressive to parents that don't feed them
For those who don’t know this is an actual think in nature where cuckoo birds will lay their eggs in other bird’s nest so they will take care of it for them. The others think it’s there’s and the treat it as such, but cuckoo birds are substantially bigger and they need more food. They basically starve out the other chicks
It's debated as to weather or not the host parents actually think that's their kids or not, in cases where the host parents do not take care of the parasite kids, the real parents show up and trash the place. So they may take care of it due to the fact that they are aware of what will happen if they don't.
In German, the term "cuckoo child" refers to a child who has a different biological father without the knowledge of the man raising it (because the mother has cheated).
accurate, because often cuckoos grow such large that they almost topple the nest over, yet the host parents don't realise all just because the inside of the mouth of the cuckoo stays reddish in colour for long.
Also, some cuckoos mimic the sound of many chicks crying for food to get more attention than a single chick would-which explains the legion-esque voice Robert has.
actually they do realise it, but guess what if they don't take care of it they get mobbed by the cukoos parent and they will destroy their nest next year too.
The craziest part is how birds try to evolve in order to keep up, such as egg or beak markings to differentiate their offspring/eggs from parasites, while birds such as cuckoos evolve alongside to counter that
Can you imagine the existential horror of a creature that could somehow inflict brood parasitism on _us?!_ Especially from the perspective of the other kids.
@@every_planet_we_reach_is_dead Well, many people in the past used to believe in Changelings, aka that their children were taken by faeries and replaced by copies of their children who, however, never grew up. Today it is believed that Changelings referred to mentally disabled or autistic children (which people didn't know about) so hopefully we have no brood parasitism but... back then, something like that existed.
Adapt, not evolve. You will twist that to say adapt=Evolve but that ignores the fact no new information is produced here in the genetic code and the species is just doing what its genetics allows it to do and nothing further. Code is already there with limitation. Bird ain't ever going to evolve to have hands like a human, code don't have that info in it. But it can adapt how it can within it's coding.@@Windmelodie
Of all of the clips this is one is probably the most accurate and terrifying. Cuckoos are such terrifying animals to other baby chicks, and it just goes to show how scary birds are.
In a exaggerated way, due to how they really don’t do anything bad just that they are raised that way due to horrid parent cukoos not taking care if their iwn children
@@subnaticashark2093 They do terrible things. Baby Cuckoos routinely kill the biological baby chicks and out compete them for food. And they aren't raised that way, it's just bred into their genes to do that. It's terrible.
The birds always make the best subjects for these kinds of clips. I’d love to see one with the fact that Secretary birds instinctively kick the crap out of snakes just for existing. You know that old office prank of spring snakes in a can? The cubicles bouta start sounding like the Western Front during a trench raid.
@@giftofthewild6665FACTS. Dad had a choice to make. 1. Date someone that understands his music goals. 2. Have kids with the love of his life. He chose 2 and then complained when he couldn’t have 1. 🤦🏻♂️
Especially since that's exactly how cuckoos work in real life. The cuckoo hatchling will chirp in exactly the right way to trick the parent into essentially thinking that it has four hatchlings to feed, making sure that it has enough food to grow to the appropriate size for a cuckoo.
The marriage ought to break up if one person wants kids and the other doesn't. It's like, the one point you can't really compromise on from either side.
People should marry when they want to marry without the whole world shrieking at them to not do it. The issue is marrying someone whose life goals don't align with yours at all (kids vs no kids) and spending the next decade trying to force one another into a box that you both knew from the beginning you wouldn't fit into.
As russians say "Cuckoo cucckoo, cuckoo (verb) how many years I've got to live?". And then you don't hear the cuckoo. Also there's a good song by Kino (Viktor Tsoi) - Cuckoo, about him asking this question

both from the same batch of eggs, right? no massive bird came in and pushed off one of the eggs and replaced it, right?
For those who don’t know this is an actual think in nature where cuckoo birds will lay their eggs in other bird’s nest so they will take care of it for them. The others think it’s there’s and the treat it as such, but cuckoo birds are substantially bigger and they need more food. They basically starve out the other chicks
It's debated as to weather or not the host parents actually think that's their kids or not, in cases where the host parents do not take care of the parasite kids, the real parents show up and trash the place. So they may take care of it due to the fact that they are aware of what will happen if they don't.
Ah, so that's why Not-Robert wanted more pancake.
yea its called brood parasitism, eg a cuckoo that lays eggs in crows nest to trick them into raising its offspring
They don't starve out the other chicks, they ACTIVELY shove all other eggs and chicks out of the nest.

In German, the term "cuckoo child" refers to a child who has a different biological father without the knowledge of the man raising it (because the mother has cheated).
Yikes. The mother is obviously terrible in those circumstances, but demonizing the kid? The kid is innocent.
@@birb7353 I agree.
@@birb7353the word Cuck was also used as inspiration when naming the bird i do believe 😂😂
@@birb7353Some people aren't capable of blaming themselves for their own fuckups.
There's also the term "cuckold" which is the husband of an adulterous wife.
accurate, because often cuckoos grow such large that they almost topple the nest over, yet the host parents don't realise all just because the inside of the mouth of the cuckoo stays reddish in colour for long.

“ more pancake for me” is one of the scariest things I’ve ever heard coming out of a bird
How does it compare to evil laughter?
This really captures the terror of the parasitic cuckoos

Can you imagine the existential horror of a creature which inflicted brood parasitism on _us?_ Especially from the kid's perspectives 😭
@@subnaticashark2093 They do terrible things. Baby Cuckoos routinely kill the biological baby chicks and out compete them for food. And they aren't raised that way, it's just bred into their genes to do that. It's terrible.

The way Robert's voice flaps dont line up is terrifyingly brilliant.
Especially since that's exactly how cuckoos work in real life. The cuckoo hatchling will chirp in exactly the right way to trick the parent into essentially thinking that it has four hatchlings to feed, making sure that it has enough food to grow to the appropriate size for a cuckoo.
