This applies in the US because the FDA has standardized and regulates the production of medication. Things to look out for are: 1. Medication strength - Sometimes you can get a higher strength formula for the same price and adjust your dose down accordingly. Very easy to save some money with liquid medications like cough medicine. 2. Medication delivery: For example tablet vs gel cap vs liquid. For me, the quicker onset of ibuprofen gel caps are well worth the higher price tag for treating certain types of pain. 3. If you're sensitive to inactive ingredients or binding agents from one of the manufacturers- This can happen with prescription medication but it is very uncommon in over the counter medication. This is because the name brand and generic often have identical compositions because they come from the exact same factory! Thanks for this tip, you're the realest Dr B!
This is the one place where I make an exception. I’ve tried some generics from the Dollar Tree and they just didn’t seem to work. I had a ringworm that I picked up from a kid, and I used the generic form of Lotrimin AF. I used it for 2 weeks, but the area didn’t budge. It actually got worse! I picked up the generic from Walmart, and I could see the improvement in 48 hrs! That made me skeptical.
I, too, am skeptical about VERY generic brands. I am more trusting of the generics which carry a large, national chain's brand name. (As seen in your video, Wal-Mart's generic brand: Equate.) The big stores have a lot to lose if they get bad press, or someone is harmed by their generics. I feel they are more careful with their quality.
