  • One technique for using a feather quill to strum on a mountain dulcimer. Tuning DAA. Using a quill noter and a quill for strumming. The quills I'm using are flght feathers from black backed gulls shed on the Welsh coast. The tune is Part A of Bwlch Llanberis, an old Welsh fiddle tune.

The quill has been used as an option for strumming the mountain dulcimer since they first started to appear around 1800. The style of playing fast fiddle tunes on dulcimer in Virginia was particularly suited to using a quill.
