  • What happened to every dragon in the World of Ice and Fire?
    This video is a look at every known dragon in the Game of Thrones Prequel: House of the Dragon as well as other dragons in George R.R. Martin's "A Song of Ice and Fire" and "Fire and Blood"
    We will also touch on the age and size of every known dragon in Game of Thrones. That’s 28 dragons. It’s subjective, but I’ve got 7 dragons BIGGER, than Season 7 Drogon.

    Caraxes vs Vhagar was the saddest dragon fight to ever happen in the GoT lore as both dragons used to be very close to one another. Vhagar and Caraxes flew together as a team ridden by two brothers during the reign of the Old King Jaehaerys, they were also ridden by a loving couple and they often flew together before ending up killing each other horribly above The Gods Eye. Heck, Vhagar even shared a hell lot of connections with Daemon as Vhagar's second rider happens to be his father and later on his first wife became her third rider so the thought killing Vhagar without a doubt would've been a very painful thing to do for Daemon.

    I think that Balerion's size is actually underestimated due to the fact that it says in the books that "his teeth were as long and sharp as swords", and the skull we saw in the show was not even close to that

      Could be that the creators of the show just didn't get it right compared to George's vision. Take the Iron throne for instance, the show made it WAY smaller and less exaggerated than what George had written in the books. House Of The Dragon does a much better job with the throne design

      Probably because like me, I believe they are so empathic that they would be willing to forgive us for our cruelty to them. It's common but sad knowledge of their low birth rates and lack of interaction with kindred spirits. This is probably a reason for their willingness to form bonds with humans. Take poor Rhaegal for example. Can you imagine how GOT might have ended if he survived? Didn't mean to bore you. I'm 63 and I still can't stand to see such a wonderful beautiful creature bleed to death for absolutely nothing. They should rewrite the entire final season and show their dragons a little more 💘.

      I often ask myself the same thing. I think it’s combo of a few things. One, we have a vested interest in Dany’s dragons surviving because we saw them hatch and grow and we grew with them through years.
      Also the show designed them with the loyal personalities of dogs in mind.... they fly like bats and love like dogs.
      For anyone who has a special bond with their dog, watching Drogon love Dany is very familiar.... obviously my dog can’t fly and breath fire, but if he could, and I was getting my ass kicked in the fighting pits, for sure he’d do exactly what Drogon did to save me.

    Many people suspect that dragons are more than mere animals and the bond between a dragon and his rider is most likely telepathic. There's a story about Dreamfyre that seems to support that. Her last rider was Halaena Targaryen. At some point, for reasons still unknown, Halaena committed suicide by throwing herself out of her window in Maegor's Holdfast. At the exact moment Halaena died, Dreamfyre snapped her chains and roared so loud that the entire Dragonpit shook.

    • @bridge4
      @bridge4  6 років тому +76

      The are several examples of that. Syrax fighting from the ground..caraxes roar as sheepsteeler flew off, caraxes and vhagar hissing pre fight despite having previously flown the world together, silverwing/vermithor love

      Daenerys and Drogon can be used as an example too, he sensed she was in danger in the dragonpit and came to save her, or when she wanted the lannister soldiers to kneel, Drogon did turn at some point and roared at them because she wanted them to kneel and they didn't at first! And with viserion and rhaegal, they did mention they weren't eating cause they knew Dany wasn't in mereen, but the moment she was there flying with drogon she looked down and they escaped to join her!

Some of the dragons couldnt even turn around due to the chains so the killers just came in through the back and killed them. It wasnt an easy feat. Most of the people entering the pit didnt come back out. I always wondered the same thing until as you until i read Fire and Blood.

      Well as Jorah Mormont said to Dany, they're dragons and can't be tamed. The Targaryens likely had figured out how to dominate a dragon in case they went rogue. It was a time when dragons were fighting everywhere, it is very likely that even the smallfolk had to figure out a way to protect themselves from the dragons.. Also, the dragonpit was designed to keep the dragons inside.. Maybe even chained with heavy metals.. If enough people decided to storm into the pit and slaughter them, they couldn't get out by themselves, not without their rider.

      Not that early really (more like 60%ish thru into the war) it'll probably be sometime in s3. If I had to guess I'd say around 6 episodes into s3.
      S2 will be 8 episodes and probably end in the middle of the Battle of the Gullet or after the battle with Rhaenyra seizing King's Landing.
      Luckily s3 will have 12 episodes to compensate as per Ryan Condal.

      The problem is that medieval succession is too unstable as a system and George uses this fact to not only criticise it but to create fun stories from the holes in medieval succession theory:
      Who comes first, the daughter of the king's first marriage or the son of his second marriage?
      What do you do as a king if your firstborn son is a weakling or exceedingly cruel, hotheaded and flippant but your second son is everything you envisioned in your successor? Naming the second son as heir is almost akin to starting war so it isn't cut and dry.
      What happens if the King dies and the wife has to be Queen Regent to a boy under 16? The Lords, Earls, Barons, War Commanders, Religious Leaders and more begin to circle like sharks, each trying to sway the regent to their own bidding or even take over.
      Do you have only two children or do you have a tonne of children to secure your house's standing but risk the possible family split leading to a vicious civil war?
      There is so much that can go wrong. Our own real life history has many of the intrigues we witness in ASOIAF minus the Dragons and magic overall.

    I'm currently listening to the audiobook and I'm right in the middle of The Dying of the Dragons. And I just can't help but have this bad feeling in the pit of my stomach that makes me think that the Targaryens are all to blame for the dragons disappearing. In their jealousy, greed, and hatred towards each other they killed off almost ALL of the last dragons, without even thinking about the ramifications. George really knows how to write complex characters! Making me love and dynasti and yet HATE the family that ruled it, not an easy task :P
    But let's be honest, ASOIAF is a VAST world, there are more dragon north of Asshai in the Shadowlands, or even on Sothoryos. As well as the fact that ALL dragons died in the Doom of Valyria seems a bit too far fetched, there must have been dragons small and fast enough to escape and fly south.

      Caraxes was Daemon”s dragon. And Daemon did not spent his life in Kings Landing. On Dragonstone, in the Stepstones and in Essos, Caraxes was free. Daemon was also a conqueror like Daenerys, not a ruler. And +50 years should make a difference.

    • @bridge4
      @bridge4  6 років тому +158

      For sure. I used to be against the "goldfish" theory about the dragons. Now I buy it, but it's only one of many factors
      Another factor between drogon and rhaegal/viserion that people often overlook is that drogon's egg was bigger
      And I also like the concept of dragons growing better near volcanic activity (which rhaneyra claims as reason for her dragons being bigger than aegons. Since hers were at dragonstone)
      and dogon was not only free, but he flew over to valyria. So that may have affected his growth relative to rhaegal and viserion as well
      But above all,I think the biggest difference between all three vs the dragons of the past is the magic-level as a whole (which seems to be very strong right now)

    • @eduard476
      @eduard476 6 років тому +68

      Another theory could be :
      George said in an interview that he did not want to have dragons into his story. They were supposed to be only myths and legends. Another writer convinced him to create real dragons.
      He intended to write only a trilogy. Somewhere between 96 and 2000 he realized that his trilogy will actually be a series of 7 books
      He wrote his story with many characters in a short period of time instead of a few character in a longer period of time. He also said in an interview that he intended to create a time gap between SoS and FFC but he changed his mind.
      Therefore, Dany is only 2 or 3 years older in DwD than GoT. And a 3 years old dragon would not be a threat to any army. That would create a situation in which Westeros was full of action and war while the Mother of Dragons played fetch with her dog-sized children. So George just boosted her dragons (a little bit).

    I remember crying hysterically while reading "The Dance of the Dragons", it broke my heart. The deaths of all these dragons always stuck with me, they were as "real" as the people, and I kinda empathized with the dragons more.
    My sister would give me the weirdest looks when, after I finally got her to watch GoT but waaayyyy after I'd read everything, I'd go on these rants about this type of thing. I'd tell the stories of the Blackfyre Rebellions or other history but the first time I started telling the Dance of the Dragons, I was crying as I recounted some events (she was enraptured and a bit like "wtf?"). I did the same when telling her about the purpose/meaning/whatever of "Jenny's Song" cause we were all watching and she and our friends were all feelin' the 'LotR' vibe and smiling. And she looks at me and I am flat out bawling 🤣🤣🤣 Then I recounted the history as well as I could but she was shook by my visceral reaction.

So yea, definitely smaller than they were in season 5 tho it is important to note that they still are appearing to be growing much faster than usual considering its only been less than TWO years since they were born.

    funny thing is Drogon's actual size in the books is just as big as Arrax in the HOTD show.

    The Storming of the Dragonpit and Second Tumbleton are going to both incredible and heartbreaking to watch in the show. So much death on both sides during both of those incidents, human and dragon.

    I really want to see the girl who bonded with and trained a wild dragon by feeding it sheep everyday; the dragon learned that she didn't mean harm and came to grow used to her company.

    I thought of Stormcloud as being even smaller (horse-sized plus wings and tail) as they said he wasn’t big enough to carry both boys; this also helps explain why Stormcloud was exhausted by the flight

    What about the dragon rumored to live within the crypts of Winterfell? Do you believe that it exists in ASOIAF? Or do you feel as though it is a symbollic message regarding a Targaryan being burried in the crypts? Perhaps that is an entirely different video (great spinoff video perhaps?).

    • @bridge4
      @bridge4  6 років тому +14

      Do I think vermax laid eggs or do you.mean a literal dragon down there? I don't recall anyone in the story suggesting such, just fan theory
      And I think the heat of the springs stems from vocanic activity below winterfell

    • @bridge4
      @bridge4  6 років тому +14

      Bran had a vision of a dragon flying over winteefell, but I'd go with the figurative dragon for that (jon)

      wives tale among fans or people in the story? i cant recall anyone specifically saying that the hot springs were from a dragon (they may have tho)

      bridge4 I think you are right! Perhaps that is reddit theory that I read long ago, and enough times to believe that it originated in the books. Good catch! Gosh, I need to go back and read those books. It has been too long!

    Daemon jumped off Caraxes onto Vhagar and stuck his sword in her eye?!?! Daemons a beast !!! I hated Daemon in the first Ep but my view on him is quickly changing he’s a decent fighter when he’s playing around not fighting for anything i’d like to see him in real action when he has something to fight for. Love it.

      Viserys had a daughter first. And he had claimed her his heir. Even held a council with lords around the realm to agree to support her
      Years later, he remarried and had a son
      So the daughter and the son had a civil war (a dance of figurative "Dragons" or Targaryens)
      and in that dance, many dragons and many figurative dragons died :-(

    I was getting deja vous while watching this and realized that I’ve just watched 2 other recent videos on this same subject. I guess Fire & Blood has inspired a renewed interest in the dragons! Of course, Smaug would kick all of their butts. I have also always suspected that the bond Targaryens had with Dragons was akin to warging. Everyone just assumes that it’s “magic” and “spells,” but applying Occam’s Razor points to warging.

    • @bridge4
      @bridge4  6 років тому +1

      I should be made this a long time ago since I compile dthe data a long time ago. Fire and blood has a lot of old stuff, like sons of the Dragon and the process and the queen. None of this is new

      Lol smaug is a weakling in Lord of the rings. There's dragons 10 times bigger than him.

    • @RedSonya4
      @RedSonya4 6 років тому

      Devin I know. But he’s still big enough to destroy any of the dragons in ASOIAF. Of course, Smaug was also lazy until provoked and had a weakness that was exploited. Happy new year!
