Amy, it's really hard to believe. From easy, quick and "basic" few minutes long videos answering simple questions, now we have fully scripted, complete and resourceful episodes about interesting, various topics. Thumbs Up!
Yeah, long form has always been my favourite (which is why I love writing books!) so getting some stuff set up for longer videos is a lot of fun for me. I'm glad you're enjoying them, too!
Hi Amy. I'm 10 years old and I want to be an astronaut. You are my favorite youtuber. Happy Thanksgiving!
Aww, thank you, and Happy Holidays!
Good luck and God speed Ms. Smith
I hope you fulfill your dream young lady. Blue skies to you.
May you have good tailwinds and clear skies!

"cold war aerial espionage" has never sounded so good. Keep up the great work.
Amy is doing an excellent job on doing the background stories, My father was Jim Barnes, CIA pilot initially Det. C, then Det. B. He flew the U-2 for the CIA and Lockheed for 32 Years. Accumulated roughly 6,000 hours in type. In addition to Soviet and Chinese operations, he participated Cuba and flew operational sorties dubbed operation Fishawk, U-2 operations from aircraft carriers. Amy is doing a great job with this series and I will highly recommend it to those interested in U-2 history.
Robert, no one else at this point has responded to your post to honor your late father for his service in the military and private sector -- not to mention giving us a heads-up to Soviet activities in Cuba. Thank you for sharing a bit of your father's career. I'm sure you have some very interesting stories from your father that should be preserved in some form. Perhaps you could do a book, a UA-cam series or partner with Amy. The stories of the personal side at home and at work would be fascinating. Additionally, being the son of a U2 pilot working for the CIA would be something interesting to hear -- having a father who couldn't tell you where he was going, what he was doing or where he had been. Please find a way to honor your father by preserving for posterity his great career as well as your recollections of the stories he told. Many deserving men and women doing clandestine work for agencies like the CIA were never honored when their actions were declassified, so your father's amazing work is a great place to start!
Amy is such a typical who’re (purposely spelled incorrectly) every single video her chest is hanging out.
She knows that she has absolutely ZERO other redeeming qualities other than her chest.
PhD dissertations defenses typically include less information and detail. Well done, Amy.
Cheers! I'm never joking when I've done more academic-level work post grad school. It's a lot more fun when you're not writing to satisfy arbitrary department requirements!
I guess the standards for a PhD have gone down considerably....
@@AmyShiraTeitel I like your thinking on this Amy! Your statement about "arbitrary department requirements" hit home!

@@stratkiller2531 Not really, certainly not for Officer graduation at Military academies !
It’s amazing what Kelly Johnson and his team were able to accomplish with the limited technology they had available to them. I feel that if this project were to be undertaken in this era, it would take ten times longer and cost ten times more. Thank you for the great content.
Ben Rich's book "Skunkworks" is worth a read on both how Kelly and later Ben were able to produce aircraft like the U2, and why such a project would be impossible today.
@@nottellingyou2594 basically Skunkworks was able to operate virtually isolated from the larger Lockheed bureaucracy and DoD oversight, which allowed them to rapidly iterate and innovate as testing and design methodologies changed, and as ideas did or did not pan out. During the U-2 program, Skunkworks had maybe 4 or 5 government liaisons total, and generally dealt with the branch secretary and higher brass for any requests.
By the time the Blackbird program ended, there was a small army of several hundred DoD (civilian and military) personnel involved, and the amount of paperwork and bureaucracy this resulted in made such rapid changes unworkable, leading to much less flexibility.
@@nottellingyou2594 np. Highly recommend picking up that book. It mainly focuses on the development of the Blackbird and the F-117, but it is fascinating.
The timing of this is perfect! Waiting for part three to re-watch them all at once! Thank you Amy.
The history of early jet aircraft is right down your alley Amy. ty much
Indeed but I think the black silhouette of the U-2 used in the video thumbnail is wrong, early U-2 recce airplanes did not have those forward wingtips...
Amy, you do not land a balloon by dropping ballast - that makes it go up! Probably what was dropped was the camera system, which landed by parachute.
I've always wondered how the U.S.A.F ended up with a couple of thousand bombers (B-47s and B-52s in the 60s) when they knew that the soviets had hardly any. Is that the reason that Eisenhower warned about the military industrial complex?
This long format video series is great! Love the depth of information.
Thank you for mentioning Mr. Overstreet. He was my neighbor for a short period of time in my hometown of Bedford, Virginia. His efforts were memorialized with a flag hung in his honor. His flag is alongside another group, my town's "Bedford Boys". The Bedford Boys were a group of soldiers who landed on Omaha Beach on D-Day. My town lost the most soldiers per capita of an town that day. Years later, Bedford became the site of the National D-Day Memorial.
Excellent, Excellent, Excellent. Great to have so much Quality Research Information all in one Place. Thank you so much. Cheers Amy.
Appreciate your work ! Born in the late 50s, I remember air raid drills and sirens and fallout shelters. Cold War history is fascinating to me. I am torn by how much waste and silliness went into it on both sides, and the selfless bravery and sacrifice of so many during those days. Thank you !
I've been subbed for a while, and I would like to compliment you on how good you have gotten at this. I know it's more dry, but damn, you write well and present wonderfully.
This feels like really solid evergreen content.
Just watched this and part 1, looking forward to the parts to come. Your deep level of detail of the subject and its placement among contemporary events is very illuminating. This series could easily be a college course. Well done!
You make me stay attentive with your pace of info. Thanks.
"Sheep-dipping" (military pilots pretending to return to civilian life as cover) is somehow a hilarious term.
A Kiwi’s second favorite activity.
I was wondering if it was legal to excecute those whom were dipping them sheep?
General Emmett E. "Rosie" O'Donnell? Consulting the internet. Ha. Rosie was indeed his nickname. I just had trouble wrapping my mind around Rosie being a man's nickname.
Rosey Grier - "Am I a joke to you?"
Not to mention being the same as a female celebrity.
Love your videos Amy, your enthusiasm is infectious and your subject matter very well researched. Thank you!
Really enjoyed the double bonus of a bit of the early history of Area 51. These two parts have been fantastic, looking forward to the rest of the series. You do incredible work breaking down complex histories for all your videos!
To people interested in this I can genuinely recommend the book "Skunkworks" by Ben Rich!
I agree, it's exceptional!
Amy is such a typical who’re (purposely spelled incorrectly) every single video her chest is hanging out.
She knows that she has absolutely ZERO other redeeming qualities other than her chest.
Another awesome and informative video Amy. I always look forward to these examples of intelligent and meaningful works that keep us glued to the screen. Keep them coming lovely lady.
Really enjoying this series. Looking forward to the next one!
This is a great series! I love the focus on reconnaissance! It's very interesting to see how direct the strategic reconnaissance relates to the politics and diplomacy
Great series, Amy! It is especially exciting to hear about Tony Levier. My earliest engineering mentor was a retired Lockheed engineer by the name of Jack Heirich who worked his whole career at the Skunk Works. I believe the CL-282 (U-2) project was one of those that Jack worked on. He was a friend and colleague of Tony Levier, and I treasure Jack's stories about their exploits during that golden age of jet aviation. Wonderful tales of coming up with ideas, realizing the designs, then heading up to the desert at Edwards AFB or Goom Lake to test them out. Jack lent me his signed copy of Tony's book "Pilot" when I was in 7th or 8th grade, and I devoured every word.
Dear Amy. Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family. I've been a loyal follower of your channel since as far back as I can remember. Thank you for using all of your hard earned college degrees and your outstanding willingness to provide us, your audience, with all of the useful educational content you have given us over the years. I am a loyal follower of your channel.
Love the deep dive format, excellent content, thank you 🙏
Really great work, Amy! Can’t wait for the next installment! Great cliff-hanger leaving us all set for the story of Francis Gary Powers.
Great series, and great UA-cam. Thanks Amy!
Wow, really fascinating. I cannot begin to imagine how much work went into the research that you did. Fantastic. Thank you.
Another great video, Thanks Amy! The details about the incremental nature of the missions was all new to me.
Thank you for this one Amy. Truly fascinating stuff.
I'm back! Definitely worth watching the first video before this; it had a LOT of useful information.
The U2 segments are Great! Really well edited and your presentation is excellent!!
Thank you, Amy. Another gripping historical account. Best wishes from Sydney.
Fascinating stuff, Amy! Thanks. I look forward to the next installment.👍
Love your channel. Thank you for making such wonderful content and I love your lamp in the background
Love your channel I grew up during the time frame that is the subject of your channel. Fyi, Thule Air Base in Greenland is pronounced "Too-lee." I was stationed there for 2 years in the USAF and worked another 2 years there for a defense contractor. Again, love your channel and thank you for the in-depth information. The quality shows.
Really enjoying the comprehensive and nuanced history. Really appreciate this channel.
I love the way you say "reconnaissance"
Your videos are great for specifics and detail also. Love it 👍😉
G'day,
Amy pronounces
"Reconaissance..."
the SAME way that EVERYBODY who learned to speak English pronounces that word..., except for the people who grew up squeaking in the (twice) "dumbed-down" Vernacular Dialect known as "AmeriKan (Pigeon) English"...
Last video she made on this topic drew quite a lot of ignorant arrogant hubristic Whiners & Whingers who claimed she was saying it all wrong...
Correcting the erroneousness of their silly silly ideations was quite a pleasure..., as I recall.
Such is Life,
Have a good one...
Stay safe.

Ciao !
Amy's videos always brighten my day!
Amy, your videos from the very beginning have been informative and well-produced, yet they seemingly keep getting better. You’re a real pro. Happy Thanksgiving! 👍

Love the channel, i have no real interest in the subject but you keep me enthralled.
I just don;t understand how you spell out every little detail, which should be boring, but somehow you make it compelling, interesting, and you usually tie those details into an overarching narrative that brings home a larger point. Bravo!
Amy talking U-2 and SR-71 ... OK it looks like the 2020 curse is fading .... good stuff is happening again
The best researched and presented videos of the 50's and 60's aviation and space programes
I've been watching since after you started your videos. Excellent, excellent work! I am 67, so I remember some of the more simple public aspects of U2, Mercury, through Apollo and the associated Presidents. I, too, think Pete Conrad (the astronaut) was a hoot. Thanks!
Thanks Amy, your so easy to listen too. Love your content, love your style!
Man, not knowing the exact date Gary Powers got shot down, I'm expecting it at every turn, and the tension builds consistently all through the story. Then the video ended. :D Haha, I'm glad there'll be a third part! Thanks for the interesting story!
It's coming up! It's such a fun story to really unpack, too!
Nicely done! Cold War stuff is catnip to me. I look forward to more.
Great video! Very informative. Thank you for posting.
And ironically Curtis le may was worried about not starting a war! I was having a fun chat with ex soviet military guy. He said if you hold your thumb up arms length and the mushroom cloud is bigger than your thumb you are screwed. The over flights were seen as target acquisition for pre emotive nuclear strike.
G'day,
That sounds a lot like judging Range when hunting with a Bow & Arrow...
If you draw the String & hold before Release, you should be able to see your Target sticking out either side of the Fist with which you hold the Bow...
It means that only Idiots break Hunting Arrows on Rocks & Trees while missing Rabbits..., and nobody looses an Arrow at a Pig, Deer, Sheep, Goat, Fox or Cat when it's too far away to reliably do any more than to scare it into running away.
I love the idea of using Thumb-Width at Arms'-Length to optically assess a Mushroom's Kilo/Mega-Ton Yield divided by the Distance to determine the Radation-Dose to which the Detonation subjected the Observer.
However, my guess is that the Method only really works with accuracy if the Observer is close to being directly Downwind of the Mushroom-Cloud in question...
What one sees 50 or 80 miles Crosswind or Downwind is essentially harmless, but the same sight blighting your Sky directly Upwind - say within 25 or 30 degrees of Azimuth, will indeed give you a dose of Nukeyoulater Sunburnies from the Fallout - particularly if the Cloud blows overhead and then it rains on you.
In the Open, that might well kill you in a matter of Dayze.
Such is Life,
Have a good one...
Stay safe.

Ciao !
Great format Amy. I love the deep dive into the history of the U2.
Oh, I didn't realize Edwin Land was involved with the U-2...pretty interesting the fact that he was also the inventor of instant photography and polarizing filters...Hence the Polaroid Land Camera.
Very well researched ... Thank you Amy !
Ive been watching your videos all day, 100% addiction : D
Fabulous videos massive fan of your videos and you're knowledge keep up the fantastic work :)
Very informative...
I've never heard anyone say "Reconnaissance" like that.
Kind of makes my left eye lid twitch.
What? You mean the actual, correct pronunciation of a French word?
Thanks for the vid. Always great.
Great material, and well presented. Thanks much!
Great job Amy! I didn't know there was this much more to learn about the U2 program.
Fantastic Amy! The best single source documentary available on the U-2 anywhere. Since being a boy, the U-2 has always been my favorite aircraft. I think it could be considered the most important plane of the 20th Century. A "a peace-plane, not a warplane".
Thanks, Amy!
Thank you. As always, the outfit is to perfection. Roses and spiderwebs, so fitting to the documentary. I am so glad you are doing this. As I am long time in the business and never been given permission to talk about it, I am so glad to hear you go over what is true. While I did not work on the U-2 programs, I did get to enjoy the TR-2, also the end of AR-12/SR-71 and as you can imagine, others. At least you can talk about it. You are beautiful in so many ways.
This is amazing! Keep doing what you're doing!👌🏻
Man, I could listen to her lecture all day.
Very interesting thanks for the great video Happy Holidays
This is part two?! Guess I'm going to hop over there per your recommendation.
Hey Amy That Spiderweb Dress is Amazing . Glad you are Safe & Thanks again for the Knowledge you Share . I'm never to Old to Learn . Lol
Amazing couple of videos but exhausting to watch!
That was captivating and these cliffhangers keep me riveted.
Great videos. You are extremely good at this.
Hi Ami! We absolutely love your "soows." You do a great job, and we learn so very much; keep up the great work!
Outside question for you, if okay: what drives your love of spiderwebs in your clothing?
Excellent! just made some coffee, gonna enjoy this!
Love this project. Doing it over many parts and aspects of the U2 is a great idea.
Amy, video was awesome as usual and well detailed as a direct result of great research; your videos are great because they're about subjects that you're interested in... but this one was missing something 🤔 you gotta have more "reconnaissance"😎
Thank you! Glad you're enjoying them!
I’m mid-video and must commend you on your superlative research and unusually intelligent, articulate presentation. Also, I wish to condemn the misogyny you experience on UA-cam and probably elsewhere. Why I’ve been curious for 50 years about the U-2 aircraft and its missions, I can’t understand. It really does interest me. Your research reveals much more on the subject than I ever thought possible. Kudos for your industriousness. And: GOOD LUCK.
Amy, from a cold war fighter pilot, you are amazing! I am becoming addicted to your work.
Amy! These videos are phenomenal, thank you for providing such informative and entertaining content!
Many years ago I read Ben Rich's 'Skunk Works'... Covers a lot of the same information as here, but you have added a lot more of the 'non-Lockheed' information. Thank you for a great presentation.
Glad to see you do a video on this fascinating set of interrelated topics, Amy. I hope that you'll be doing follow-up video(s) on the two U2 flights that were shot down in 1960 and 1962, and the near shoot-down of a U2 over northeastern Siberia in 1962. The Kubrick film "Dr. Strangelove" provides some clues to the historical context, with respect to not-so-fictional debates within the U.S. President's circle of foreign policy advisers. Some U.S. Pentagon (Defense Dept.) officials remarked, after seeing Dr. Strangelove, that it amounted, at least partially, to a documentary on the state of affairs when it was released in 1964.
There was a real-life counterpart to the opportunistic General "Turgidson" who argued to President Merkin Muffley that the planes in the film should not be called back from their missions, and there were other generals in the air command who tried to persuade the President to take advantage of the fact that the nation had a much larger nuclear force at the time. The real-life General Turgidson (who campaigned for the U.S. Vice Presidency in 1968) also took a highly provocative act by unexpectedly launching an ICBM from a base in the Pacific, right in the middle of the Cuban Missile Crisis. There was a serious attempt to prevent a peace treaty in 1960 and to trigger a conflict with the Soviets in 1962.
I love this girl. These programs are so interesting. plan to watch all of them!
So? When do we get a "longform" documentary made for you for our "PUBLIC BROADCASTING SERVICE" here in the USA? Your work is a natural for it! Especially your last book on the ladies who were preparing to be astronauts. That could be a whole miniseries! If PBS doesn't "green light" it I'll bet one of the cable tv networks will! Either way? YOU young lady deserve MUCH more exposure as an accomplished author and vifeo presenter. We'll be lobbying HEAVILY for you with ALL the media outlets. Good luck and continued success!
Fantastic research and presentation.
Hi Amy , I'm listening to this whilst making my stuffing 🤣 Merry Christmas from Belfast Northern Ireland . 🇨🇦🎅🌲☃️
Love the new intro
Love the extensive, multi-part discussion.
Great video. Very informative, thank you!!
I like the animation of yourself for this intro. That looks cool. Is that something you made or someone else made for you?
Thank you for another fantastic video Amy 😊👍
Great episode. Two little things: (1) In the 33:00 area, seems like you have Eisenhower forbidding overflights twice in a row without having approved them in between. He banned overflights, we did a border flight, then he banned overflights again, but border flights continued? What was he banning that second time that he hadn't already banned? (2) I've heard Thule pronounced TOO-lee; Wikipedia says THEW-lee. I don't think it's ever one syllable. However, the first time I read the name, I pronounced it exactly like you did. Quibbles aside, as I said, great episode. I never knew Eisenhower was so ambivalent about the U-2. It must have driven those involved nuts to do all that work and then be on again, off again, over and over. I also didn't know this was the beginning of Area 51 (under that name).
Epic series. Keep it up Amy
Great historic information Amy. Your videos never disappoint :)
Great work Amy,,
I am a new subscriber to your channel. Great channel thank you!
Amy you are freaking awesome. please keep up the great post. I love you girl.
Kelly Johnson had a policy about not marking secret drawings "SECRET". The logic was that if a drawing wasn't marked secret it wouldn't draw any attention. The U2 production line was actually restarted and the original workers bought back, to build additional aircraft.
You've obviously done your homework. Well done and thank you.
Wonderful. Thank you. I've been admiring these planes for a long time but had no idea about any of this history and intrigue. (BTW, don't you mean, "discourse"?)
