    I'll keep running Ubuntu as a 30 year Linux veteran, and let the kids keep flappin' their jaws about how it's "soooo laaaaame duuuuuude." 😏 Thanks for the video.

      I guess you were able to make the first comment on this video because of the faster IO speeds of Ubuntu =)

      I really like Ubuntu since it serves as great starting point for introducing new users to the world of Linux without it being an overwhelmingly complicated and off-putting experience. The distro elitists can vehemently dislike it all they want, but without user-friendly distros like Ubuntu, many folks would never have gotten into using Linux in the first place.

      @@yep596 I disagree. Newbies should dive head-first into the harder to use distros first while they have time to waste learning the fundamentals and ins and outs. These distros also usually have more problems, which will help them learn troubleshooting. Then when they're extremely knowledgeable and need to worry more about getting work done than diddling with operating system details all day, run something that's 1) stable, 2) performant, and 3) basically "just works" like Ubuntu.
      I find it funny, kids trying to demean Ubuntu cuz "looool it's easy to use." Yeah, I remember decades ago, enjoying my harder to use, esoteric Linux box where I thought I was a "power user" by doing a bunch of trivial shit by hand. Then my balls dropped.

      @@yep596 And realistically, as shown in cases like this, the benefit/effort assessment of working to get performance equal to/better than Ubuntu's has to account for how much Ubuntu puts in place for the user already. If endless tweaking is fun for you, then more power to you, but there's something to be said for a setup that mostly handles itself. And IMO 23.10 has knocked it out of the park - I installed it on an Intel CPU/Intel integrated system, an AMD CPU+Integrated/Nvidia GPU, and an Intel CPU/Nvidia GPU, and they are running really well with pretty easy setup for all three.

    Thanks for the re-running. Always good to have more data on hardware 👍

    I'd be curious to see how Debian benchmarks with btrfs. I thought the performance issues have been resolved.

    I wonder if with those results on Fedora btrfs the performance hit could also be saving battery even if you put it on performance mode compared to Debian and Ubuntu ext4s. Maybe Fedora btrfs is optimized for mobile stations like laptops. Again, just wondering since there wasn't a mention about battery/power consumption on those tests.

      Have all my servers running in performance mode, the problem with btrfs is that it floods the kernel with sysreqs to create memory blocks for each write. It is very ineffient when writing or re-writing the disk

      @Berecutecu Місяць тому

      @@CyberGizmo wow, I'm a bit speechless that this isn't covered with a bit more frequency. This is basically the trade-off about using btrfs, we are losing performance. Given what you mentioned it could even be consuming more battery. Btrfs gives you compression, checksumming and snapshots BUT at a cost of performance. This is very informative thanks for the eye opening. You got a new subscriber

      @@Berecutecu the last video I did where I benchmarked btrfs was the Fedora 40 video, and it did much better, so I think the fedora team is paying attention and trying to smooth it out, its still slower than the rest, but it is way better than this benchmark showed.

      @@CyberGizmo yeah, I hope they improve things on the btrfs side. There are more and more distros making it available. I even saw Kubuntu now has it as an option during installation. It could even be a good contender to compare against Fedora KDE in your next benchmark videos. Just saying 😌

      @@Scranny maybe, I have never tested this with btrfs, but it may be possible to use fstransform, I know this works for ext4 and xfs, here is the blog post about it: fedoramagazine.org/transform-file-systems-in-linux/
      Make sure you backup everything before attempting anything like this.
