Amorite Kingdoms and the Sumerian Renaissance - Ancient Mesopotamia DOCUMENTARY
Вставка
- Опубліковано 26 чер 2019
- In the previous episode of our historical animated documentary series on the history of Ancient Mesopotamia we discussed the rise and fall of the first empire in history - The Akkadian Empire. Its great rulers from Sargon to Naram-Sin broke the mold and set in motion a way of running a state which would be emulated for thousands of years to come. From this point forward the Empire would be the prominent form of government, however before another could rise in the region a dark age had to be overcome. After the fall of Akkad, the Gutians had established their own dynasty and hegemony in the Euphrates river valley which would set the stage of what was to come. Welcome to our video on the brief ‘Sumerian renaissance’ and the eventual rise of Babylon.

@@howardholland5180 are amorite ancient arab?
@@dani3078 the ancient arab people were nomadic tribes in the deserts of the central and southern arab peninsula. The Amorites were a pastoral mountain people further to the north. They are both part of the semitic family, as are the ancient Israelites. But they aren‘t further related than that to my knowledge. The Arab people really only started emerging as a power with Mohammed and the rise of Islam in the 7th century AD (CE). If you are interested in the history of early Islam I‘ve found Al Muqaddimah to be an interesting channel.
I like that you guys are going this early in history, I don’t know that much about ancient Sumerians. Keep up the great work guys

I love how the ancient mesopotamian region goes through several empires and rival kingdoms and in the meanwhile Elam is just hanging out there to the side
FOR TWO THOUSAND YEARS.
its not that easy they also had many many migrations , internal conflicts , outside invasions (mainly from Mesopotamian side) etc , we just dont know that much about them because of mass destruction of their kingdom under Emperor Ashurbanipal of Assyria .

Not going to lie: ancient Mesopotamia is the best and most interesting time in history for me and having my favorite channel cover it brings chills to my spine :)
I agree, but also the ancient Greeks have their highlights, don't you think?
@@amoosebitmymom690 I enjoy some of the Lydian and Minoan stuff for sure. Greece by the time of the Peloponnesian Wars is pretty cool, too i guess.
@Herdan I just think that while quite a bit of the history and discoveries of Mesopotamia have been mostly lost. Meanwhile, the Greek knowledge (Archimedes, Plato, Homer) have been mostly preserved and in retrospect, they have probably contributed the same (if not slightly more) as ancient Mesopotamia. Don't get me wrong, I acknowledge that Mesopotamia was a vital part and the first step towards advanced civilization, I just think the Greek knowledge was better kept and thus actually contributed more
@Forsaken Pumpkin You have a timeframe for this, most Egyptian texts I'm aware of discussed their shock in the size of Greeks..nearly a foot taller, loved trading for the fruits, olives and dates, etc
@Herdan I completely agree with everything you said, my only point is that because of how ancient it is (at least 1000 years before Athens and Sparta) , many records have been lost that both ancient Mesopotamia and Greece, affected WESTERN civilizations almost exactly the same. Of course ancient Mesopotamia did it earlier, first and better and affected many civilizations (more than greece) but because of how ancient it is (3000 bc) even though many records were found, many were also lost while the Greek knowledge was well kept, and especially with the Roman having been very similar and affected by Greece, in retrospect even though Mesopotamia did it first, did it elegantly and better, through the remaining records of both civilizations they have affected WESTERN civilizations the same.
Assuming the Mesopotamian records were as well kept as the Greek`s, then obviously they would've contributed much more

This channel consistently highlights history on the edges of what I've learned, expanding my understanding by filling in gaps and fleshing out details on societies, characters, empires that I've heard about but don't really know.

Even in the ancients times the middle East was still complex
@ARTWAS usa
@ARTWAS What are you talking about, Arabs are descendants of the Semites, they are native to the middle east. They were always there.

Arabs are a semitic people, all semitic people are both nomadic and farmers/villagers and true inhabitants of what is called the meddle east.

This has got to be my favorite history channel! The production, writing, and topics are just phenomenal!
It's really baffling if you think about it, the region which we call Iraq nowadays has been one of the most developed and advanced regions in the world for thousands of years. From the kingdoms you see in this video to the House of Wisdom under the Abbasid Caliphate in Baghdad.
@ZaqueHunzahua Science isn't something that just appears out of nowhere, you improve upon previous discoveries. By your logic every scientific discovery is "stolen"
ZaqueHunzahua and from the Syriacs, ...etc
ZaqueHunzahua Do you go around UA-cam saying the same thing about for example the Roman Empire stealing from the Greeks? They gave their forces the order to spare Archimedes in the siege of Syracuse so they could use him, Caesar was on his way to study Stoic Logic in Greece before he was captured by pirates. The USA and the Soviets stole German scientists after WWII and used Werner von Braun for NASA, and you can go on and on. Your argument is just plain stupid and an Ahistorical way to try to disprove Islamic contributions to science which they expanded upon.
@ZaqueHunzahua If you're still calling it stolen you don't get what I'm saying. Knowledge spreads, by trade, conquest, whatever. And if you actually work upon that knowledge you wouldn't be "stealing" it, that's not how science works. You can't be like "Aha, I got this science! Now nobody else can have it, it's all mine!". And a bunch of nomads can still be patrons of arts and science and settle down relatively fast under the influence of settled people inside their empire to produce arts and science themselves. It's not impossible, it has happened several times in history.
ZaqueHunzahua never heard of “sassanid” scholars and scientists...
Wow I didn't realize how rich ancient Mesopotamian history is. They should totally make a Total War game based on this epoch of history.
In fact, Mesopotamia is the very birthplace of human civilisation as we know it today
While Mesopotamian history is rich, I personally think a Total War game would suck. It would basically be like Rome 2 but with fewer unit types, mainly archers, spear infantry and chariots. No cavalry, no elephants etc..
@@TheDirtysouthfan True but maybe it would have a sort of Age of Empires 1 feel where the factions can start off in the Stone Age with units wielding clubs and slings and stone axes but progressively get better weapons and gear as they advance in technology, and as their economy and population improves.
@@TheDirtysouthfan if they make the game in Sumer's times , then yeah for sure . BUT if they make it in Neo-Assyrian/Babylonian era then it will be glorious . Assyrians especially had so much military units and types in military that even the Romans didn't catch up with during Roman republic time .
@@TheDirtysouthfan translation, it need a hella of a studio, and a good director
We need an open world game set in Mesopotamia during the Babylonian Assyrian conflict
An open world game set in Mesopotamia during any era it was not controlled by one major power and before the Persians would be nice.
Please don't let it be Assassin's creed. I'm pretty sure they're gonna ruin it...
@@badmanthings yep they ruined Egyptian setting, even though the world is gorgeous, the story and combat is so boring, you can't even play 5 minutes of it.

A great video about a fascinating period of history ! The constantly shifting political landscape of the Syro-Mesopotamian Basin may be contrasted to the relative stability of Egypt and perhaps accounts for the greater pace of innovation there (although Egypt had its own triumphs in the meantime obviously).

An inspired and high quality presentation for one of the most beautiful pages in our history ... and in this exciting channel!
6:18 Palestine (wich means Land of the Philistines, name created by the greeks) didn't exist, the correct name is Canaan.
So is every name used in this video. Every Arab country present or past is named by Greeks. However bronze age wise you're right, it was known as Canaan.
Yup! I suggest people start looking up the ancient egyptian "Merneptah Stele" as a non biblical source.

This is amazing! I love Mesopotamian military history. Any chance you guys could do the Fall of Nineveh?
Loved the video and the work you guys put into it but Palestine did not exist then. That was a term coined by the Romans after a Jewish revolt intended to insult them by naming their homeland after their ancient enemy, the Philistines. If anything it should be labeled as Canaan.
Was used by ancient greeks as well, but that's well after this time either way.
@@misterscienceguy I am not aware of this. To my knowledge the first mention of the name is by the Roman's on or about 135 AD called Syria Palaestina. You may be confused with the name Philistia, the homeland of the Philistines by whom the Roman's named the newly reconquered territory, see above.
Just to add my two cents.
Philistia was the name of the Philistine homeland -- roughly, what is today, the Gaza Strip. This name was not used only by the Ancient Greeks. It was used by everybody. The Bible uses it too, in Hebrew.
The rest of what became Israel was called Cana'an.
The Romans renamed the whole thing Syria Palaestina, as John Coldiron describes.

The Mesopotamia period is so interesting, it contained the first known human civilisations, and there’s so much history behind it. Should be taught more at school.
And the interesting thing about that first civilization is that they wrote about the era before them, I read somewhere on the internet that they wrote about the previous 450,000 thousand years before them (or at least they claimed that) still interesting tho
They can’t do that… they built a history of lies and if we knew about the beliefs and languages of this region the truth would become evident

in fact, Hammurabi's tribe was (Banu Yamina) while Zimri-Lim's tribe was (Banu Samaal)
the word "Banu" means "children of" used for Arabians tribes just like it was used by their ancestors the Amorites
Yamina = right (Yamin in Arabic) , Samaal = North / left (Shamaal in Arabic)
