I had a commanding officer who used to say if it’s broke , fix it, if it ain’t, paint it.” I would suggest that you do your own inspection before CHP shows up and a good wash of each tractor so they don’t mess up their uniforms could win you brownie points. It’s always better if your inspections are done in your shop than at their stations.

Recording all interactions with law enforcement is a very good idea and perfectly legal. If you ever suspect you're dealing with someone dirty it's easy to hide more than one video recording device of your choice so if one tries to extort you they can be internet famous when you crush them in court. Most folks are reasonable people but bad apples happen when there's money to be made.

I know it’s not mandatory for shops to hire non ASE Certified mechanics, but for the State Troopers to conduct D.O.T. inspections and issue summonses , are they required to be ASE Certified to have an in-depth knowledge of all working aspects of the components necessary for a truck to operate ? I would hope that the governing body conducting safety inspections and issuing violations, has a higher degree of training then a driver that just might be ASE Certified . I’m sure the State has trained these personnel to their own standards.

When we recover wrecked trucks and trailers, DOT is usually there to help make things road safe for trailers on the ground that we may potentially roll down the hiway with, but as a recovery outfit, we have different rules to follow because wrecks can't be loaded for revenue runs. Most are still in reasonably good shape but some can be so badly damaged that we can't tow it at all. Those can be lifted onto an rgn to be carried away. But then it becomes an over-sized run. Most of the DOT guys we've dealt with in the past have been really cool, because they understand what is going on. Now company drivers owner operator and lease drivers can't do what we do. Because these companies will tell drivers to load damaged trailers. That's soo unsafe, and yet I've heard many a story where a company told drivers to load a trailer that was structurally unsafe, after a roll over.

Is this the California yearly inspection?
Wow, i was a heavy truck inspector and took pride in keeping trucks safe and reliable.
Inspections can only be performed by experienced mechanics, it's supposed to be about safety not control.
This is not a safety inspection, it's a violation inspection.
The inspector doesn't pay attention to the actual inspection points federally mandated, lifting the front end to inspect kingpins
Checking driveline for loose joints and yokes
Actually inspecting the p brake cans and hoses
Takes about an hour per tractor
No tractor trailer inspected in California is safe, it's up to the individual operators to take care of their fleet.
