The thing about anorexia is that the people who suffer from it become so obsessed with looking thin that they lose sight of the fact that the disease makes them look 10 or 20 years older than they are. Lena was 18 or 19 here and she looks 30.

Lena should not have been working at this point, it’s very obvious she is ill and painfully thin here - who was looking out for her ? and why on earth was that wooden charisma vacuum Max Bygraves so popular back then ? Absolutely baffling
She was not joking before he came on. He had an ego the size of the Royal Albert Hall. He was not joking either. He used to brag about how great he was. He was unpleasant in real life and refused to have anything to do with his illegitimate children. As for his records, they were bloody awful.

Made a lot of money for her agent probably who encouraged her to remain thin and childlike allegedly. When she was becoming an adolescent they told her she was too big to fit into her dresses that made her look like a child and that is where the anorexia started. Then as she had her hit shows in her early teens, they dressed her in a style that was too old for her. The poor girl was not allowed to grow up normally. Same thing happened to Judy Garland who became addicted to pills having to take them as a child to keep her slim. Lena came from a small island in Scotland, brought up away from her family, her mother committed suicide and her life and career went into a downward spiral. Such a talent but I am sure she is now at peace

The world was so not PC in them days but it was clear from that video that Lena was under weight. She didn't look happy either, almost like she didn't want to be there.

I once asked Bygraves in Great Yarmouth , for his autograph. He waved me away as if I was something on his shoe. Not a nice man.

It's lovely going down memory lane Lena was truly a wonderful singer in her day when I saw her on top of the pops age ten singing mama it made me very happy and it still does to this very day

I had never seen this clip before today. You're right - what she said at the end is heartbreaking.
Max retired to Australia and my visit to Brisbane from Sydney took me through surfers Paradise where MacX lived with his wife on our way back to Sydney but I remember surfers paradise long beach with its silver sand when the town just began to grow during 1968.

Lena who drove me nuts as a kid, looks awful, so tragic, and a little thought, if Lena was an ordinary girl, with no voice, she'd probably still be here today
