Well done sir. I hate to see tools that are neglected. I have told people over the years, see that tool ? I bought that in 1966. Someone always will say, why have you never used it ? I tell them I have used that tool many times. That tool was a investment and has allowed me to make money to support myself and my family. That tool still has use and value to it. Someday I will get back some or all of my investment.

You know Chuck, that's why I have such a problem with electronics. I spent hundreds of dollars on phones, video recorders, VHS recorders, digital cameras... All useless landfill now, where as my tools purchased at the same time are all still useable!!!! =)

I wake up to you videos on Tuesday-Thursday -Saturday
every week for I don't know how long.....this morning.....different story.
After I checked my calendar twice to make sure it was Thursday and having a look outside to see if i'd put the garbage out for collection (Thursday is garbage day).......I was assured it was Thursday so back to youtube I go.....no ScoutCrafter.
At this point im not worried,..... "John might be busy-he may have had trouble with his camera.....(starting to worry a little).....he may have had a doctors appointment ..........(2 coffees later)......he may have had an accident.....(now im panicking)......NO SCOUTCAFTER.....BUT IT'S SCOUTCRAFTER DAY....."
just as im about to contact the NYPD to have them start searching......BOOM
there's my Thursday ScoutCrafter video.....all is right with the world.....I can breath easy again and balance has been restored to the universe.....
Cheers John I hope you're ok.

Scout got him a Greenfield tap.
It started out looking like crap.
    A whole bunch of rust
    All covered with crust.
Joe's wheel shined it up in a snap.
Then on to the old wooden case.
The finish just looked out of place.
    A little steel wool,
And a lot of Scout's bull.
That stuff really cuts to the chase.
The set really turned out well.
Scout got it looking so swell.
    It shines just like new.
    Now there's nothing to do.
Scout will rant and raise some hell.
    Burma Shave
From the top of Tater Nob, thanks for the fun! :-)

With regard to mounting the vise- I’ve found that you can drill the mounting holes with a tap drill then tap it with a course thread tap, and just use the cap screws. Wood can be tapped, believe it or not and it will hold quite well. It eliminates the need to counterbore on the backside, thus saving a step. I.ve attached my vise to my workbench that way and the bolts have never loosened.

Need your opinion on mounting a big vise. The one I have is a China made and has three mounting holes. Should the holes be a 9 o'clock, 12 o'clock, and 3 o'clock? OR should they be at 3, 6, and 9 o'clock?

Hi Elliott- Usually I mount the vises with three holes 9-12-3, this way you can keep the vise very close to the edge of the board that faces you... =D

I want to mount a vice using this method. I am going to buy a set of transfer punches and a brass hammer (to avoid mushrooming the punches). Can anyone suggest a suitable weight of hammer for this purpose? I can't think I will use the hammer for anything else. Thanks to Scout for the video.

I notice you never use a product like Evapo-Rust. Any reason for that?

Gregg- Depending on the vise, I like to have enough overhang to add the clamps and make sure it's stable..

Do you ever make your own cosmoline or have a good recipe ?

Hi Howie! You know I don't have a cosmoline recipe but I have used my 50/50 home brew Mineral oil/Vaseline mix on many tools and it works great and is non-toxic... I think you will like it! ua-cam.com/video/PmeI8yMJLFg/v-deo.html

I never heard you say what size that set is. How big is the biggest tap?

    • @ScoutCrafter

David- Greenfield made a ton of sets and this one was a small one but had that interesting Tap accessory! This set was made for 1/4" and smaller... =)

Tony - There's also an old Sicilian saying (at least an old Sicilian said it to me), "Words are like bullets, once you send them off, you can't call them back." Give Scout some slack; if you;re getting impatient for something new, just revisit something in his archive. There's more to posting a video, especially ones as entertaining as Scout's, than meets the eye.

My uncle worked for Greenfield all the way up until he passed away. That set looks to be way too old to have had his hand in the manufacturing.

I am not 100% sure what was in this set when new, Greenfield made 100's of different sets and included all kinds of weird stuff other then Taps. I guess whatever they thought would sell! =)
