Well, I agree for the most part. She didn't want Margery to be at risk with a sadist bastard like Joffrey, but it was also political. Margery wouldn't have been able to control Joffrey, he was to unpredictable and unhinged and he did not like to be told what to do, the power of King went to his head and he enjoyed exercising that power over people. However, Tommen is softer, kind hearted and gentle and much more naïve to the ways of the world. Olena knew that if Marge married Tommen, it would be house Tyrell that ruled the seven kingdoms.

I'll be the first to admit that when I began to watch this show I had no idea that 70 year old grandmother was going to be biggest badass on the show- and her in the company of the Kingslayer, the Kingslapper, the mother of dragons and the Hound....
I loved them. Natalie Dormer looks a LOT like a young Diana Rigg, which helps you buy their familial relationship. They’ve got great chemistry, and I loved how much Olenna LOVED her granddaughter. She didn’t treat her as a chess piece to be used. She manipulated the other pieces to give Marg the best chance.
Not only that, she takes something off of it in her palm. I think she had back up poison on Margaery's necklace. Remember when she orders the handmaidens to find better necklaces? I think she needed one that would disguise the poison better.
@@hothotheat3000 Hence why it was a backup plan. Also, the guardsman and kingsguard aren't exactly the brightest in the kingdom. Unless they were caught in the act, it would probably never be discovered.

I didn't realize until recently that Diana Rigg was in "On Her Majestey's Secret Service". "I was good. I was very, very good." I believe her. She the one gal who got James Bond to marry her...

2:08 sneaky moments like this where Olenna reveals she was behind Joffreys murder and at the same time clearly removes a “backup” pearl with poison from margaery’s necklace exactly the same way she removed sansa’s on the beginning of the wedding is what makes this show the GOAT (on the first 6 seasons)
@@xaviergarcia8342 I agree, it definitely had its moments. For me, one of the best moments was Littlefinger's death. I know that's a controversial scene, and a lot of people hated it, but I thought it was PERFECT. And even without that, season 7 was still WAY better than season 8!
@@giggle_snort Sure! I loved LF death scene. For me it was very good. I don't know what some people wanted. He dying in battle? He wasn't a fighter lol.
@@SakariWolf13 Um, yes I’m aware that she pulled off a Pearl using the excuse of straightening the necklace. The moment was a direct callback to Sansa at the wedding. Because some people might watch the show and wonder “wait, how was he poisoned?when did someone slip the poison in?” So instead of having Olenna explain how she did it with words, they showed the audience by making a matching scene. But I haven’t seen anything that says the pear was a backup? I’m pretty sure she didn’t remove the Pearl to cover her tracks in case someone examined the necklace. I think it was just about demonstrating. But, if you know otherwise, let me know :)
Right before this scene Littlefinger says "Nothing like a thoughtful gift to make a new friendship Grow Strong" when talking about Joffrey's poisoning. 'Growing strong' is the motto of the Tyrells.
Until this scene I assumed Olenna and Margaery both were a duo who moved as one. I was genuinely surprised to see Margaery wasn't in on her grandma's machinations.
Oh.. Now I get why this episode was so amazing. Bryan Cogman wrote it. Couldn't they let him write more episodes? He seems to understand the core of the books and the characters' interactions seem more rich when he is in charge. Also, the one-liners are way more subtle and realistic. It was refreshing to finally see Daenerys's dark side, something that D&D's biased interpretation would not have shown.
I loved the planning of the episode as well. Especially the two scenes with Littlefinger&Sansa and Olenna&Margaery... the transaction and the small hint at the end when Olenna touched Margaery's necklace... perfect. Oh and the mention of the gardens by Olenna. I thought it was a very distinctive symbolism of their house, I barely remember any other characters to use them, yet here she says she hates them =P
Tell that to the thousands of book fanboys raging because they altered Bran storyline and showed stuff from the white walkers lore that even they didn't know. As far as those is concerned, the show is ruined.
J Jo I'm a fangirl of the books as well. But even more than that I'm a fangirl of that world. Yeah, at times it feels like alternate universes, but I don't see that as a bad thing. To my mind that makes it even more interesting and as long as it's plausible and doesn't contradict important features of the story I'm all right. For me this was the most interesting episode in a very long time, and a big part of why is the parts that weren't in the books. To my mind the show and books simply complement each other and they both work together in creating this world.
Evija3000 That's the right attitude to watch this show, and I agree. As a book reader this kind of people make me feel ashamed sometimes for their short-sightedness.
One of best scenes in whole series, acted by two splendid performers. Mourning today the death of Diana Rigg but grateful we had her wonderful acting for so long.
Just an interesting side note but Olenna's betrothed was actually Prince Daeron Targaryen. When his siblings and future King and Queen decided to marry each other for love despite their parents' defiance, and his eldest brother marrying a commoner and giving up the iron throne, he also chose to break his betrothal with Olenna. Prince Daeron was gay and he died fighting alongside his lover.
I adore their bond. How are really eager Marjorie was to hear her grandma story and how she can relate to it. But that look when she said how absent minded of me... It was that I’m calling you out the best way possible look. I love it and it just identify their entire relationship in one conversation
OMG!!!!! I am absolutely in love with this character! I listen her like if she is my grandma :p She is funny, fearless and dangerous, she is perfect! :D
Olenna is a wonderful character. She is the mind behind the Tyrells and it's greatest weapon. She plays the part of a patriarch and matriarch at the same time.
Technically Olenna isn’t framing Tyrion, she’s letting him take the fall but she didn’t intend to frame him. Joffrey was embarrassing Tyrion by making him his cup bearer, that wasn’t Olenna’s doing. It’s just unfortunate circumstances Tyrion ended up with the murder weapon. Also she isn’t really going after Sansa either, since Petyr helped strategize the plot to get Sansa out. Sansa was gonna look suspicious anyway, but I don’t think Olenna wanted either Tyrion or Sansa to be punished
Anyone else get the feeling that Olenna told Marjory this as a way of training her? The whole conversation prior to this was about how Marjory has become successful at manipulating men in order to gain their power. It's kind of sinister. She was like a natural psychologist with Joffrey, only she fed his ego and sadism. Olenna seems to be trying to make Marjory willing to kill. She believes Marjory is the smartest Tyrell alive (in the show) and soon she won't be around to carry the family. She needs someone as ruthless as she is to carry on after her. And she begins it by showing Marjory a classic case of killing to 'protect the family'. Marjory on some level is likely grateful to Olenna. Sansa and even Cersei pointed out that Joffrey would have tortured her. Therefore murder for the sake of protecting family instantly seems appealing to Marjory given how much she owes to that very thing.
This woman is everything I wanna be when I’m old: smart, rich, tough, protective over her family, and capable of cutting everyone around her to pieces with just a few words
It's interesting that she's wearing her hair like Cersei now. Olenna's words of "You just do what needs to be done." are similar to when Tywin told Cersei to get married to Loras. Margery is probably going to start feeling like she isn't really in control of as much as she wants to be and it's Olenna and the rest of the Tyrells are calling the shots, even if their interests align. Just like how Cersei feels like she is losing control of just about everything and is just doing whatever Tywin says.
the tyrells family structure were really different from the lanisters. Both power hungry but their motivation and love for each other family members was so much stronger than the lanisters.
drunkbygreentea yeah thats actually what she does. And i swear im not being sarcastic. Obviously she doesnt give me the details, thank god, but yeah shes awesome! im traumatized 4 life. Oh well, wouldnt have it any other way!
I love this scene. The first hint that, despite all her ambition, Margaery has a sense of decency, are her looks of revulsion at Joff's behavior during the wedding. Her skin is crawling at the very idea of him touching her come that night. In this scene, her shock, and even horror, to find her acerbic-but-lovable Grandmother was capable of calmly murdering a teenage boy, tells us is she still innocent in many ways. I even think her concern for the smallfolk was in large part legit, if also self-serving. She became one of my favorite characters after those two scenes. BTW: Diana Rigg, the actress playing Olenna, was the only Bond girl to marry 007. So of course they had to kill her off. She was also a co-star of a private detective show called The Avengers. It was the essence of hip Britsh 60's pop culture. And as sexy a little minx as Natalie Dormer is, Diana was even hotter. An absolulte stunner. She passed just a while ago, so it was good to see her get a role like this and just kill it towards the end of her life. RIP Ms. Peel!
After all this time, it's clearer to me than ever that the Lannisters fell from power because Tywin and Cersei just couldn't get over their hatred of Tyrion. At no point after Joffrey's murder did either one of them even consider the realms of possibility that it might've been somebody else, and because people like Jaime and Bronn who knew Tyrion didn't do it were distracted or busy trying to prove Tyrion's innocence, they had no time to pick any other candidates either. And by the time it was all over, Tyrion had escaped anyway and Tywin was dead. Olenna really couldn't have been gifted a better scapegoat.

@@spanishflea634 Tywin had no clue who actually did it. He only knew that Tyrion didn't do it. But he was willing to let Tyrion take the blame. The intention was for Tyrion to be sent to the Night's Watch. Tywin wanted to get rid of Tyrion, but Tyrion would never leave willingly. And Tywin knew that Joffrey had to die--he was a sadistic monster who was increasingly difficult to control. Left unchecked, no one in the world would be safe from him. Not even the Lannisters.
@@MCSPARTAN501Joffrey is the goat
I'll be the first to admit that when I began to watch this show I had no idea that 70 year old grandmother was going to be biggest badass on the show- and her in the company of the Kingslayer, the Kingslapper, the mother of dragons and the Hound....
Lady Mormont would cut straight through her crap and Olenna would love every second of it.
Kingslapper... is that Bronn? 😂😂
KINGSLAPPER
@@giggle_snort when did bronn slap king do you use you brain? Its tyrion cuz he slapped joffrey
Hm, she kind of does treat her like a chess piece. She treats her like the queen, appropriately enough.
I'm a grandma. I knew it was her doing all along. heheheh :)
“You don’t think I was going to let you marry that beast do you”
The way she playes with Margaery's necklace at 2:10 resembles the necklace Sansa wore to the wedding which had the poison in it
never ever that’s intentional.
Not only that, she takes something off of it in her palm. I think she had back up poison on Margaery's necklace. Remember when she orders the handmaidens to find better necklaces? I think she needed one that would disguise the poison better.
@Frank that would be risky. If they somehow seized her necklace after the wedding and found that...yikes.
@@hothotheat3000 Hence why it was a backup plan. Also, the guardsman and kingsguard aren't exactly the brightest in the kingdom. Unless they were caught in the act, it would probably never be discovered.
@@frankbutterfield7800 Is this confirmed? Please say it's confirmed, because that's AWESOME!!
World's coolest Grandma. And Natalie Dormer..... just DAMN!
The fear and shock in Margaery's eyes when she realises that her grandmother basically confessed to committing regicide just to protect her. She sees just how ruthless Olenna can be even whilst genuuniely being a loving and caring grandmother.
That was muscle memory when she played with the necklace, also 100% confirms that she did it if anybody was still not sure.
girltalk with grandma are my favorite scenes.
!!! ALL HAIL THE QUEEN OF THORNS !!!
one badass granny
“You don’t think I was going to let you marry that beast do you.”-Olenna season 4 episode 4
“He’s a monster.” -Sansa season 3 episode 2.
Sansa was the one that gave Olenna the idea for the Purple Wedding.
It's been so long but I still find great comfort in the knowledge that, ultimately, Sansa was Joffrey's undoing
I think Joffrey did that himself. Sansa put her on alert but the King did plenty until front of Olenna to help make up her mind.
I love that scene, because there's just this moment after Sansa says that where Olenna and Maergery seem to silently say "oh well, he'll have to go then."
I didn't realize until recently that Diana Rigg was in "On Her Majestey's Secret Service".
"I was good. I was very, very good."
I believe her. She the one gal who got James Bond to marry her...
I not only loved that she did it, but I also loved the reason WHY she did. I love how she killed him soely to protect her granddaughter. They had one of the strongest relationships on the show😍 I wish they would have made it to the end.
Season 7 wasn´t THAT bad. I mean, it wasn't as good as the others, but had it's momments and it's scenes.
@@xaviergarcia8342 he died
@@johnedward9948 Yes, I know hehe.
The best part of this is Margaerys shocked face when she realizes what her grandmother is capable of. 😂
It also implies that while Margaery is a manipulator like any she's actually kind hearted. That's not an act.
I love how Olenna acknowledges that even if Tyrion didn't kill Joffrey, he likely would have eventually.
I really do love that they had her straighten Margaery’s necklace while confession. Such a clever way to call back/explain how she pulled it off.
She not only straightened it, she pulled off a pearl from Margaery's necklace that was supposed to be the backup for Sansa's.
@@SakariWolf13 Um, yes I’m aware that she pulled off a Pearl using the excuse of straightening the necklace.
The moment was a direct callback to Sansa at the wedding.
Because some people might watch the show and wonder “wait, how was he poisoned?when did someone slip the poison in?”
So instead of having Olenna explain how she did it with words, they showed the audience by making a matching scene.
This just shows that despite Margaery being cunning, manipulative, and intelligent, she doesn’t automatically revert to bloodshed.
Plausible deniability...
x2
i love the old one, she is such a clever woman!
Evija3000
That's the right attitude to watch this show, and I agree. As a book reader this kind of people make me feel ashamed sometimes for their short-sightedness.
J Jo Indeed. I mean, c'mon, JRRM is in on it so they can't really go that wrong.
One of best scenes in whole series, acted by two splendid performers. Mourning today the death of Diana Rigg but grateful we had her wonderful acting for so long.
Olenna is definitely in my top 3 characters...she is fantastic and Diana Rigg was such a wonderful actress. RIP
I love how at the end of Littlefinger's speech he uses the Tyrell words
".......To help this new friendship *Grow strong*."
You go Granny!!
This was one of the best scenes in the whole episode. This scene is one of the many reasons why Olenna is one of my favorite characters
Biggest badass on the show. Not only has she lived long enough to have grandkids, but she doesn't take shit from NOBODY!!!!
Best grandmother ever
This single dialogue was better than ANY dialogue we had in the last season.
That is why she is the Queen of Thorns....badass
Lady Olenna Tyrell, The Queen Of Thorns, The Kingslayer.
Beware she might turn to a grandpa!
rouzbeh61 pardon?
Olenna is a wonderful character. She is the mind behind the Tyrells and it's greatest weapon. She plays the part of a patriarch and matriarch at the same time.
... But she's going to die in the next season. Mark my words.
+James Repstock lmao try again
If anyone was wondering, the Targaryen Olenna was promised too was Prince Daeron Targaryen, the son of King Aegon V, Daeron is Daenerys’ great uncle
she totaly "killed" that episode
You know she’s gangsta when she turns down a targeryan back in their heyday
I truly don't think it was possible to use a more perfect and hilarious adjective than "leisurely" for that line from Olenna
The best grandma everyone would love to have
Anyone else get the feeling that Olenna told Marjory this as a way of training her? Therefore murder for the sake of protecting family instantly seems appealing to Marjory given how much she owes to that very thing.
absolutely agree. Great post.
Olenna always reminds me of my own grandmother. Strong, defiant and doesn't take shit from anyone.
Two acting icons together- Dianna Rigg and Natalie Dormer!
i knew she was part of it. All those talks with Sansa about Joffrey. She knew he was no good for Margaery.
I honestly never find female characters intimidating, but I get chills when she says “but I do know.” Great acting.
This woman is everything I wanna be when I’m old: smart, rich, tough, protective over her family, and capable of cutting everyone around her to pieces with just a few words
She's looking at Margaery with so much love! 🤗 before cunning noblewomen they are granny and granddaughter 🥰
Love Olenna. And Margeary's face after 2:07, brilliant acting all around.
“But I do know”
This is why Lady Olenna is my spirit animal; she’s an intelligent badass who protects
1:21 - great, now I have that image in my head for the rest of my day.
Olenna was honestly just protecting Margaery. Grandma for the win.
"I was very very good".. Grandma got no chills😂
Olenna killing Joffrey was set the moment Sansa told her the truth. She wanted to know the kind of monster he was.
this scene is fucking phenomenal...the subtle grasp of the vials on Margary's necklace at the end...genius!
the tyrells family structure were really different from the lanisters. Both power hungry but their motivation and love for each other family members was so much stronger than the lanisters.

That was 10 years ago! Let that sink in. Gods the writing was good back then.
18 minutes ago it was announced that Dame Diana Riggs has passed on... Rest in Peace, Lady of Thorns.
Crazy how young Olenna was jumping around with James Bond, and young PYCELLE was blasting Rebel Scums on Hoth with AT-AT walkers

I've come here to fill the void after the show's finale. Damn, 1-4 seasons were great.
God writing was sooo goood and subtle scene was long as it should be
Olenna is such a badass granny.
This episode was pretty good
I want a granny like her!
I have a granny like her kinda. Our relationship is a lot like theirs. Except I don't want to be queen and my grandma doenst poison people.
drunkbygreentea yeah thats actually what she does. And i swear im not being sarcastic. Obviously she doesnt give me the details, thank god, but yeah shes awesome! im traumatized 4 life. Oh well, wouldnt have it any other way!
Game of throne, where even the kindly granny kicks ass and kill the king.
Got to be said - Olenna was one of the great characters. She outwitted EVERYONE. Even Tywin.
I love how the cam zooms in on her 'but I do know' comment, low key scary
RIP Ms. Peel!
Olenna, straight up legendary
Teaching a masterclass to a worthy student
the most shocking part here isn't olenna revealing she killed joffrey, but the fact that margaery is wearing something with long sleeves
Haha true.
Natalie Dormer was absolutely gorgeous in this scene. She was probably the most beautiful in the series
Nah she looks odd..Cersei and Dany are better
Love the subtle editing before (new friends to grow strong) and at the end of this scene (necklace fiddling).
She was good. She was very, very good.
Rest in peace, Diana.
