- Hello Everybody, This video is meant to help you figure out what oil and fluids to use when doing the maintenance on your HMMWV. These are all the oils and fluids that I will usually use on my own truck. I will be making separate videos on each maintenance process.

Also for anyone wondering about using synthetic oil. Synthetic oil can leak on older seals that normally won’t leak when using conventional oil. Conventional oil will actually swell the rubber seals at a higher rate than the synthetic oil and prevent them from leaking. On an older Humvee, I’d recommend using conventional Oil like Rotella T3 15W-40. On a newer Humvee with good seals on the engine, I would definitely run full synthetic.
just adding to this - synthetic oils don't cause leaks; they merely reveal them. Saying this because there are people out there who will go nuts if you put synthetic oil in an older vehicle because they think it causes leaks
Will Rotella T4 15W-40 work for 1988 M1038?
@djstevetexasusa just use any 15w-40 hd diesel oil. That engine really doesn't need anything fancy.
Wonderful to see an unbiased guy, not trying to sell something, but simply just running a UA-cam channel at its best.
Thank you!

So, #1, you DO NOT use DOT fluid in a HMMWV brake system! The TM (tech manual) for a HMMWV up to an 1151A1 calls for silicone fluid. But go ahead and use DOT fluid! I'll gladly sell you new calipers and a master when they fail! And they will! The military has standardized items for a reason. Plus, you use synthetic oil on a broken in engine with conventional military 15/W40 DEO. You're wasting your money! Not to mention you may have a duel filter HMMWV like I do. Trust me, 19 years as a SeaBee motor pool LPO, use a PF35 and Rotella 15W40. You can't go wrong! I use it in all my customers HMMWV's with great success! Regarding the power steering fluid, we use Dextrin 3 (yes, it's still available at any auto parts store!) in the military. But I recommend using AC Delco hydraulic power steering fluid. I run it in my HMMWV's and all my customers. Why? ATF had a problem when you go into a turn and slam on the brakes. It would snap the power steering pump shaft. Research it. So with the flushed system and AC Delco oil we have had no complaints. Plus customers, and myself, have better steering response.
There are no scuff additives in conventional oil. You will destroy camshafts and bearings.
Thank you for this comment; thank you for your service as well.
Thank you for this videos I got my Humvee 3 weeks ago I’m going to do all the oils this weekend. This video is perfect 👍
Very informative and I do praise your passion for Humvees. Great social service --for some of us-- we limited mechanic skills. Thx buddy and keep humming.
Great video, looking forward to the maintenance series.
Thanks for a very informative video just like all your videos. Thanks for taking the time
Nice job bud...keep the videos coming..
GOOD DUDE.. ...appreciate all you do
Hi Dakota, good video and I'm already looking forward to the upcoming films w you change the all oils :-) Greetings
Good video, Dakota!!
Thanks for sharing. Would be nice to see videos of you doing the work or how to
Thank you for the information. I will be ordering the oil from Amazon.
Thanks this really came in handy..
Super helpful thank you
Great video and great information as always. Dakota, you are the MAN!!! Can I ask you to follow up with a video on the oils/fluids needed for an FMTV/LMTV as the chat groups seem to have too many opposite opinions and I know you will shoot it straight?
awesome!!
Another Note if anyone lives up North (i.e. Alaska/Canada, generally very cold places!) We use 0W30 for the engine in all of our trucks. And I have yet to verify it, but I've been told about running a lighter oil (Like 10w) in some styles of transmissions. My assigned truck had oil, filled into the transmission and since I've signed for it, I haven't really had any issues. Lasted a trip from Anchorage to Fairbanks and back with the speedo pegged at 60
Great videp
Got mine from the first auction in 2000/1….USMC trucks. Changed out everything right away as it had been sitting for some time in Barstow. It didn’t look bad but it gave me a starting point for my maintenance. Didn’t realize the Dextron 3 was out of production. I have a good supply at the moment. Good info on that thanks!
So you got yours 21 years ago?
@@dieselburner4461 That's correct....back when the surplus parts the dealers had were decently priced because the number of trucks out there was really low. I've enjoyed the conversation on the forums now that there isn't like 8 or 10 of the same guys posting once every month or two. LOL
Hello Dakota, I have been watching a lot of your video, awesome. Kudos to you. Keep up the good work.
I have a question though, can I use AC Delco Automatic transfer case fluid for my Humvee transfer case instead of AC Delco Manual transmission and transfer case fluid?(that you have on the visor)
Please advise.
Thank you,
Subscriber from California.
Congratulations for the video.
Another question.
What is the maximum temperature indicated by the coolant needle that you have ever reached under effort? Have you ever touched the line/notch next to the middle when overexerting yourself? Thank you
When you change your oil, cab you do a verbal overview on how to change out the oil pan on the engine and transmission? I have to do both and I would like to know parts to remove to make the job easier.
Please do a video flushing brakes with denatured alcohol and filling with DOT 4
FYI. Dexron III is readably available at most decent automotive stores. Just did my T-case service with it. It's not the unobtainium you make it sound like.
Thank you for the videos. Quick question. Why do use 75-90 gear oil instead of 80-90.
Is there a way to find the history of a Humvee, like where it served?
Question buddy, ever had a problem with the alternator? Ever bought a Humvee without radiator, got any videos about it??
Hi, by any chance, may you take a picture of the cables on the transfer case,, I got (2) 511 on the transfer, (1) 511B and (1)511A from the truck .. does it the order ?.. thank you in advance for your help
the HP 3002 oil filter is no longer available. is there another one from k&n that can be used ? Greetz from Germany Chris 😊
Hi there, I'm getting mixed answer on the proper transfer case fluid to use
If I check the lubrication order manual, it says to use Dexron 2 ATF (or 3 if it's compatible), how comes many people use manual transmission fluid?
How many gallons of coolant does the Humvee take? I'm getting ready to do mine
I have 2001 m1097a2 looking for trans filter. Sites asking drain plug in pan or no plug?
Why T6 synthetic vs T4 conventional. I read synthetic causes leaks etc
Don't Lucas have all types oil and grease?
Was wondering how many quarts of oil does the 6.5 (Non turbo) engine require?
8 quarts 👍🏼
Is it ok to use Dexron 6 instead of 3? The manual recommends dexron 3 so I am little confused
dexron 6 is fully backwards compatible.
Hi Do you need some great lighting for your cars to help you better driving, off-road. We're the pro auto lighting manufacturer for nearly 20 year and we're looking for sponsorship!
Here is a tough question for you.
Do you know of any European equivalents for these fluids???
I will look into that and make another vid for all my European Humvee friends 👍🏼
Do any of you guys know where to get 4 man soft top conversion kit? I've been looking online and everyone is either out of stock or doesn't come with the rear curtain or C pillar
Look up Blue Ox tips on UA-cam. My good friend William Welch makes the best tops I have seen. He might have info on where to get the C pillar too. You can look him up on Facebook and message him on there.
@@DakotaWoodHD thank you for the info I really appreciate it 🙏
@@sylvestertaylor7800 No problem! Let me know if you need help with anything 👍🏼
Have you priced the military soft top kits?
@@DakotaWoodHD I'm not too sure what profile is his on Facebook lol
Synthetic oil for a 1998 humvee ?
I don’t think so
Yup! I have also discussed this with many people who have been building/working on Humvees for a long time.
I just pinned my comment about this above. But I will add it on here too.
@@DakotaWoodHD i always run fully synthetic oil and havent run into any issues. if something leaks, fix it.
DO NOT USE DOT 4 IN A HMMWV. They use silicone based brake fluid, which is DOT 5. DOT 5 is not compatible with DOT 3 OR 4. DOT 3 and DOT 4 is compatible.
Man very helpful
