What is the SQE, QWE & Exemptions for Foreign Qualified Lawyers - webinar by Ingemar 21.2.23

A recording of a webinar given by Ingemar Hunnings of Hunnings Consultancy on 21.2.23 to give info about the SQE route to qualifying as a solicitor of England & Wales, QWE (qualifying work experience & Exemptions for Foreign Qualified Lawyers from the SQE2 exam. Ingemar has been providing a service as an External Confirming Solicitor for QWE since the summer of 2020 and at the date of publication (24.3.23) has so far confirmed the QWE for 53 Aspiring Solicitors. He also assists with SQE2 exemptions.

hello! May I ask questions regarding exemption? As I was a little bit confused with it. There is a list of jurisdictions where qualified lawyers can apply exemption for SQE2, and Canada (Ontario) is one of them, but, there is a “paralegal” qualification in Ontario which is also licensed and supervised by the Ontario Law Society. So, my question is, would this “licensed paralegal” in Ontario be eligible for exemption?

I'm not sure and best to check with the SRA. There is also a paralegal qualification in Engalnd but is is not sufficient. Does the Ontario paralegal qualificaton qualify you as an Ontario lawyer? Does it give you the same practice rights and English solicitor? My suspicion is that, as the title suggest, it does not and you cannot apply for exemption from the SQE2 and will need to get your QWE confirmed. Please do let me know what the SRA reply. [e-mail]
