Story Behind The Song
Because his life was filled with grief and trials, Joseph M. Scriven (1819-1886) often needed the solace of the Lord, yet he lived his life giving and sharing all he had and often doing menial tasks for the poor and physically disabled.
Joseph’s fiancée died in a drowning accident on the eve of their wedding in 1844. His hopes of marriage were crushed again when a new bride-to-be died after a short illness in 1855.
A neighbour, sitting up with him during an illness, discovered the draft of 'What A Friend We Have In Jesus.' Upon inquiring, Joseph said he had composed it for his mother, to comfort her in a time of great sorrow, not intending any one else should see it.

He performs miracle's everyday. My brother was one. Almost died with double phenmonia. He alive and coming home tomorrow been in there a little over 3 months. God stepped in and healed him and the doctors too, God worked through them also. Thank you Lord Jesus.

This song written in 1855 by Joseph Scriven. His first fiancee drowned and died the night before their wedding and his second fiancee died of illness before their wedding. Tragedy abound in his life but in the mist of his pain he knew Jesus. In 2022 we must know Jesus is still with us in our struggles.

This beautiful old hymn makes me think of my sweet Grandmother who has been passed many years ago. She lived a life dedicated to her family. She was so self-sacrificing. She lived for her family; she lived her life as if Jesus was her best friend. I can picture her smiling down on me from heaven.

Thank you, my dear brothers in christ, for such a powerful melody. Oh yes, we can always call on him, for his phone line never gets busy. Most of all, we can always take all of our problems and pains to the Lord in prayer. I remember when my father passed away in Haiti, left my mom with 7 boys, and my younger brother was only 7 months old at thetime. When my father died, my mom had a breakdown. And we were all scattered around, staying with different family members. It was hard for us at such young ages. Your father is gone forever, and now your mom, who is so precious in your life is now on the streets. Imagine that. Thank God, by the grace of my wonderfulsaviorJesus, my mother is now a missionary preaching the gospel of christ all over Fort Lauderdale and her own home land, Haiti.

Hands down favorite hymn as a child. Loved singing it. Memorized at school. That was a long time and one brain surgery, lots of radiation and chemo ago. So I don't remember all of it anymore. I need this and Jesus now more than ever.

Great job and sounding good! Takes me back to when I was a kid in the 80s singing these old time hymns in church. Wish more churches would sing these songs in church today. Went and saw the Redeemed Quartet tonight in Brookville, Indiana! Wowser!! What a blessing!! Packed house and once again people from all over the country and even Manitoba, Canada. Met alot of wonderful people and saw alot of tears flowing and alot of celebrating of what Jesus has done!!! Thanks young men for answering God's call on your lives!
