  • Ajahn Brahm often says “never allow your knowledge to stand in the way of truth." Ajahn elaborates on this saying and explains why there is no ultimate reality and the consequences of believing there is.

If you experienced happiness all the time, you would take it for granted? Surely, that depends on the individual. I knew what suffering was for a good many years & I would NEVER want nor wish to go back to that state of being again. VERY grateful to have received healing & to have experienced the pure bliss of enlightenment. Nothing compares to the pure joy of our Buddha Nature. Why would i ever take that for granted? That is and would be unfathomable. Infact, it has become a very trustworthy steering wheel for my life. Like a lantern, in a ship, at night. I can always find my way out of the darkness and straight to the lighthouse. ✌️❤️

Ajahn Brahm always says to learn from your suffering but I always wonder how do you actually do that? Perhaps I missed something. Does anyone know if there is a video on how to learn from your sufferings?

It is possible to add that we must watch very carefully and inspect the suffering. How suffering occurs, what causes it, how it disappears and what makes it disappear. We must watch without reacting to it, as if watching a film unfold. Both in everyday life and in meditation we have it do it this way. Effort, awareness (alertness/comprehension) and mindfulness are the things we need to maintain.

Suffering comes from causes, and with meditation your mind is more discerning to what the causes are. I follow Yuttadhammo Bhikkhu meditation instruction as my practice. He has lots of videos on youtube too.

WatchingDude ..... Maybe what you want to know is “what do you learn from suffering” ... instead of how do you learn from it. Eg ... one morning you wake up and see a pool of blood underneath you. Your first reaction is most probably “horrified”. You’re not going to be asking “how do I learn from this.” You’re either going to call 911 or have someone drive you to the hospital. And when you get there, the doctor tells you you’re in the final stage of an incurable lung cancer and he gives you 6 months to live at best. The first thing I would do is to book a flight to BSWA to see AB and attend his retreat. And when you get there, I guarantee he won’t be asking “how” you got there. He may ask if you’ve learned anything from your current circumstances and “what.” Your answer may be no! The “how do I learn” is the wrong question in my opinion. It’s HOW DO I GET OUT from all this suffering is what I would ask.

I follow and listen to talks by Ajahn Brahm and Ajahn Martin. And let me tell you, you can’t get any more diverse and dissimilar than these two teachers. They are very different. One is soft ... the other is hard. One is cold ... the other warm. One is left ... the other right. One studied theoretical physics .... and the other studied computer engineering. One is originally from England .... the other from Germany. And they both speak and read fluently in Thai. I like that. I get a complete picture of what’s going on. I listen to others ... Ajahns Bhramali, Sonja, Jayasaro, even a Vietnamese monk name Thict. But I mainly follow AB and AM.
