    As usual, Maggie does a great job helping out, guarding against wolf attack and inspecting the finished work.

    Great video mate, Just a little thing I noticed, when you joined the two rolls to get the length you could have terminated both ends at the strainers and kept pulling the slack out with the gripples and gripple tool.
    All you have to do is remove the verticals with some snips as you pull them up.

    • @diyfarm
      @diyfarm  9 місяців тому

      Yeah it’s is an option and I have been doing that a little however would be better with a couple of clamps to get a better pull rather than taking multiple verticals out each time. It’s what I’ve done on plenty of plain top wires though. 👍

    On any long stretch, especially if it has bend a strainer should be installed
    Also the wire should be on the side the stock is in so they are pushing against the posts and not the staples
    Posts are marked from the bottom, so the are all the same distance from the ground, not the top, so the fence follows the lay of the land
    Never have to cut the top of posts

    Fair play Tim, that's hard graft for a single person.

    When fencing a long stretch might it be a good idea to make up some long hooks that hook on the top of the posts and hold up the wire loosely so its not causing friction as you tension it.

    The hinge joint mesh is ok if there's a risk of trees falling on the fence, it'll collapse but can be pulled back up again. However, it's a royal pain in the butt when stripping the picket wires to prep the end or joins, would prefer the fixed knot style but not stocked by my local supplier.

      Sounds about right! 😂 Went for an older model that will just be an occasional workhorse like the Volvo was, albeit better suited for towing. Not sure I would trust relying on it as a daily. 😬

      Did I miss you getting the disco? What has it replaced? As long as you look after it, it will serve you well. Mine is over twenty years old and I wouldn't swap it for anything 😊

    Great job Tim. In my experience the staple depth is pretty critical it wants to hold the wire firm but not bury the wire into the post. If the staple does not at least contact the wire when the stock rub against the fence the galvanised coating on the wire will be taken off with the rubbing action of the wire on the inside of the staple and may develop rust in that spot shortening the life of the fence. I wonder how others have got on with the Robinia posts maybe the suppliers can give you some advice on fixings etc.

    • @macsmith6216

      Staples are not meant to hold the wire firm on high tensile wire, they are there to hold it up nothing more

    • @tomvalentine9985
      @tomvalentine9985 7 місяців тому

      You missed my point about the wire being able to move excessively behind the staple

      If it’s moving that much it’s too slack
      There’s a clue in the name high tensile

    Have you got the depth gauge set all the way on the Milwaukee stapler should be putting those staples in fine

  • @vaalrus

    I wonder how the Paslode pneumatic or fuel-driven staplers compare to the big red M? I did 9 acres of horse paddock with game fencing, trundling along with my atv, a generator and a compressor. Noisy, a bit of a faff going back and forth with the hose, but it beat the heck out of hammering staples.

      Few weeks back when I retire the Volvo. Just needed more towing capacity so an older high mileage Disco is hopefully going to behave itself as the new workhorse!

      Not really had much issue with my Disco 3 and it's about 14 years old, use it mostly for transporting the spaniels and other spaniel type paraphernalia 😉😉

    Thanks for the tutorial. Can you send me a link for that blue metal bar type thing 😅 that holds the fence for tensioning and the ratchet that you used on the top one which u said cost about £40. Might get 2, 1 for the bottom and one for the top. Thank you again

    For the sheep wire i like to get the tow of my boot under it so its off the ground, stops it rotting in the scrub that builds up around it, also easier move it in 30 years time 😁

    • @diyfarm

      Yeah I’ve put the bottom single strand a toe above ground and then set the net just above that. Handy to use the single strand to cover any dips the net doesn’t follow. 👍

      Best to either tie with a termination knot or use the T gripples. They don't require a tensioning tool and easy to use.
