This was the first NerdCubed video I ever watched. I was scrolling through UA-cam because I didn't want to do my homework. The second I heard Dan's intro I almost died...... X_X
I like how none of the train people know yet I'm not a train person and I noticed. The reason the train goes faster at 50-ish% is because the pressure is too low to go that fast. If you look at the PSI meter on the right, then it will go red if you go too high with the throttle, so until you build up more pressure, going fast isn't something you can do. So by using the blower and stuff you can build up more pressure in order to go faster.
I'm a train person! At a lower power, you will have much more torque for the speed you're going at. Think of it like the gears in a car. You don't move off in first and immediately shift up to fifth gear, you need to accellerate.
The reason the loco increases speed at 52% is because locomotives are delicate machines that need to be treated with care, also its like putting a car into a lower gear for more power, which means speed will be increased more effectively with a load. Or at least that's how I think it works, look at me! The worlds most clueless enthusiast! Sure I can tell the difference between an A1 and a A2 but yet I can't tell how different cutoffs work! :-D
Locomotives need to built power. If you release all power in ones most of the power will ebe lost in steam. But your story Sam is also correct. I know how to drive a steam locomotive. But there is one engine only the best can drive, And that is the Union Pacific 4-8-8-4 Big Boy.
"If we come to a sharp corner, I'll slow down." crash. "Am I breaking the speed limit on your test track? Whatcha gonna do?" crash. Respect the game, Dan.
TTAMTWASOOC It's a joke. In a real situation I would not recommend letting the boiler pressure go ANYWHERE NEAR 290%. The train would go fast, but it would go fast in multiple directions. At the same time.

Klamath2046 YES! That's exactly it. Thank you so much! I've spent months and months searching. I got stuck thinking it was one of the Pomp & Circumstance movements for a long time. You're a true hero.
This was great, and so was his description of the Doppler effect, ah past dan, hearing the back and the front at the same time is simply just an explosion.
Finley Curtis I have seen several go past my house that are enormous. Some taking several minutes to pass, part of which look 100+ cars long. Although it might be a rarer occurrence than elsewhere in the world, we still do have stupidly long freight trains.
Just an fyi, to us rail enthusiasts, cajon pass is one of the most accident prone tracks in America, due to engineers like dan here, going too fast, and wrecked FM-7 head units.
i know it matters no more, but you ran our of pressure in the boiler so you were dumping steam and not getting any power, you put the throttle up to 25% then bring the reverse (center lever) to 60, then 50% throttle to 50 reverse and 75-100% throttle and reverse to 30-15 depending on whether you lose speed or gain speed. this is how you go faster. brake cylinder pressure is what the brakes are set to and the brake pipe is your pleasure you have on stand by. you have to wait for the brake cylinder to empty pressure before your train will move
Excuse my nerdness, but: It is known as a gear in cars, but in trains, that is known as the reverser. Its not even a word, but that's what it's called.
When the throttle is fully open, you force more steam out into the pistons. When they're half open, more of the pressure (PSI) is put into the pistons, making the wheels spin faster.
The way it works is the reverser controls the amount of steam into the cylinders. closing the valves puts less steam into the cylinders but also makes the train run faster
instead of lowering the regulator, lower the reverse to increase the speed, treat the reverser like the 'gears', except lower reverser setting is like higher gears.
Dan you are not a man who sits around for 120 minutes and drives a train. But you ARE the man who sits down and drives a bus through a desert for 8 hours.
The reverser controls the amount of time that the valves are open. Once you get to a certain speed you don't want the gear to stay open as long or it will slow you down. It's much more complicated though.
By the way the coal train that you saw in the first operating session was in fact a small train but not uncommon in the United States. I typically see coal drags carrying more than 70+ hoppers with just coal. Typically over a mile long with two or more locomotives depending on where it is and over 70,000 tons. Try driving that train.
"Look, I had maximum comfort levels 100% of the time, and excellent driving 87% of the time! 87%! Okay, for the last 12.83% or whatever, EVERYONE DIED. But they were still comfortable."
You need to wind the cutoff (middle lever) back, that is why you can only run at 50% regulator! wind it back and put the brakes in "running", between 4 and 25 generally.
with the steam engine you lower the revercer. it increases the cylinder pressure, which in turn increases the force, and increases the speed. the regulator does basically the same thing but its not what real conductors would do.
Dan with the flying train at half percent, think of it this way.If you turn your computer on,it ill lag a bit,and then get no-lag as it warms up.U have to push up the throttle SLOWLY
an i5, a gtx 760ti or an amd 7970, an intel ssd for your os, a seagate barracuda 2tb for your main storage, and 16gb of good-brand memory. You can never go wrong with anything corsair or asus. msi and coolermaster aren't that bad either.
you have to build up your psi. when your psi is built up then you can go faster otherwise your just losing pressure. you psi meter will be green when your in a good throttle percentage for your current psi.

you can go fast you just have to move the reverser back abit and like what you said watch your pressure
Aint correct
It’s also due to too much draft in the engine when you fully open the throttle
34:33 you're right: it is a pressure thing. 50% throttle gives you more torque (power) , while higher settings increase RPM (speed)
And yet, we are still watching....
yup.

you haven't got enough steam pressure. so you're essentially trying to use power you don't have

the steamers tender the symbol is the british railways insignia (PLS PLAY THIS AGAIN AND THE HIGH SPEED TNT IS ACCUALLY IET)
I think the speed stops going up so it allows it to cruise at the speed limit perfectly
Dan you are not a man who sits around for 120 minutes and drives a train. But you ARE the man who sits down and drives a bus through a desert for 8 hours.
"I'm the type of guy that doesn't play a train simulator for an hour and a half" but you are the guy that plays a bus simulator for 8 hours

The reverser controls the amount of time that the valves are open. Once you get to a certain speed you don't want the gear to stay open as long or it will slow you down. It's much more complicated though.

That lever you are calling speed is actually controlling the water supply used for speed. Its all about heat, water and steam.

that's sort of it. the reverser adjusts cut off which means instead of having a long stroke it has a short stroke and short stroke=faster choochoo
You need to wind the cutoff (middle lever) back, that is why you can only run at 50% regulator! wind it back and put the brakes in "running", between 4 and 25 generally.
"Your score will not be recorded" I'm disappointed Dan didn't make a joke about him recording it
