  • Can She Operate This Wood Chipper?
Here is e physical test of the Harbor Freight Predator 212cc 6.5 hp Chipper Shredder. HF 62323
We are going to fire it up and run it through the break in period with some leaves and small branches, then feed it a few good sized branches to see how it performs.
This unit takes leaves and small branches (up to 1/2 inch) in through the hopper on top and claims to handle branches up to 3 inches in diameter through the front. We plan to mulch a lot of leaves with this thing this fall and to turn all of the branches from our winter tree trimming into chips that we can use in our landscaping.
    Enjoy!

Just a word of warning with chipper. As fast as it pulls it in to chip it’s just as fast to rip your hand open. ALWAYS feed with big end first. I had a branch that had a smaller lateral branch farther up broken off with a jagged point. As it got sucked in I could not get my hand out of the way fast enough. It ripped my hand palm wide open through my leather gloves. 37 stitches later and thinking about what had happened.
If the branch would have been the other way it would have been fine.
    Be careful.

Great video. Just a quick tip in your shut-down (O.F.F. settin ;) ) to help your engine last longer.
Idle the engine down for a minute or 2 to cool the engine down and let the blower dissipate the heat and hot spots. More importantly, because that setup has a huge fly wheel, it runs on for a while after power to the spark plug has been cut.
Here's what happens when you do this. The govenor senses the RPMs' slowing sown, so it opens the throttle wide open to compensate. What's happening at this stage is the carb is dumping gas into the cylinder, compressing it, then blowing it out the exhaust. During compression, some gas will be forced passed the piston rings (this happens in all engines, even when running in the O.N. position. This unburned fuel finds it's way into the oil, dilutes it, and shortens engine life. Not to mention, you could get an awesome back-fire out the exhaust as the unburned fuel ignites on the hot exhaust.
    Cheers.

Was considering this chipper to mulch a brush pile left by the previous owner. After watching the amount of work to chip such a small amount of branches, I'm not convinced this chipper is a cost effective investment. During wet weather, I have been cutting up some tree branches and burning it in a barrel.

Looks a lot like my 5yr old Snapper. Shredded leaves take up less room in the compost piles. Don't overload the hopper and keep a stick handy to poke because twigs can block the chute. Once you get the hang of it things go quickly. As you can see the pull handle is awkward. A little ingenuity can solve that. Oh yeah, I wear a forestry helmet with hearing protection and face shield, that dude can spit out chips and such at velocity.

Harbor Freight tools are made for home owners that only use their tools two or three times a year. After about twenty-five or thirty uses something will fail and it will no longer work. If you are going to buy HF then you must buy the extended warranty, they honor their warranty very well. If it hasn't been too long you can add the warranty even after your purchase. Good luck, you will need it with that machine.

Hey there just a FYI for your safety when working around any moving machinery especially rotating style please remove all jewelry and fix your hair back if a branch would have got hung up in your bracelet or you lean in to close and your hair get caught no more beers for you ever

The chips will float and possibly get easily washed away on a good flood/rain. Good luck with that. The chips might make a very good foul being though. You might find better uses than you first thought.

      @3MISSISSIPPI  6 років тому

Actually, we know other people in our same flood plain that use the chips and they don’t wash away ... they do prevent the heavy mud puddles .

I know from experience that it will not start with the switch in the off position. These are great little machines, I have only choked mine down one time. I also took off the useless rubber flapper whose only function is to keep you from putting debris in the hopper.

Put the end of the weedwacker in the trash can, fill with leaves and in a few seconds you have mulched the leaves- lawnmower works too

Does this chipper/ shredder need any fuel additive added to the regular UNLEADED gas ? I have this Harbor Freight chipper/ shredder machine, BUT, It has NEVER worked or me. I got it maybe 4 or 5 years ago, and had tried to chip some skinny branches and the to then shred some fall leaves, and the machine ended up getting "clogged up" after I had basically fed it a bit of "light debris" for it to make into small bits. I still have the machine, BUT, I am REALLY unhappy with how the machine has performed. It is a VERY clean and UNUSED machine, I just have to find a qualified person who can help me figure out just HOW to use it.
I HAD been able to at one point get it started, and to feed a few thin branched and leaves into it, BUT, not long after, the machine seemed to be all CLOGGED up.
I am JUST angry about why I can NOT just use the machine as I wanted to, to shred stuff into small pieces and compost them?
