Hi Brian. What a coincidence. I have planted parsley, lemon mint, cosmos and dill. Hopefully Tuesday i can plant some other companion plants. I used all the info that I watched this year on your channel to grow tomatoes and peppers. I have a temperature controlled cold frame. So my happy tomatoes and peppers went out in it today😊 One step closer to "playing in the dirt in the garden". Can't wait for your next show.😊

I got seeds from the side of the road and have sprinkled them over where I want them every year. I mow around them. They aren't weeds to me!!

You might want to try chocolate mint. Grows and looks like regular mint but dark stems. That and Corsican mint are my favorite. I use Corsican mint between pavers since it's so short with tiny leaves. Walking over them smells heavenly.
borage is something tomato hornworms hate.. also marigolds dill parsley thyme basil and chamomile.. just an fyi.. love your channel.. 👍🏻 thank you so much.
Well, borage can grow bigger than some tomato plants. They grow very strong and can take over entire garden beds and crowd out other plants. I like letting some grow for the bees, but I weed a lot of them when they grow too close to other stuff.
Something ate my new basil this year to the ground and left the parsley. Have to replant and put out Sluggo 🤞
Spearmint or any mint is invasive. I got some from my moms yard that her husbands mother had planted back in the 50’s. I collect it for tea and medicinal purposes but keep it contained in an area. I did not know you could use vermiculite as seed starting soil, thanks!
Crimson clover is also beneficial for soil erosion control on hilly terrain 😊
I understand that the bees prefer the white clover tho so 🤷♀️ idk

I would love to see you do a colab with Ashley from Gardening in Canada to kinda show the differences and similarities of the two extremes of climates. She might also be able to give you insight on the soil issue you had in the past which would help us in the future in case it happened to one of us. You both are very knowledgeable people and when combined could be very entertaining.

My yard is basically weeds with a bit of grass. Over time, I plan to keep adding garden areas.
I have some red clover seeds from a few years back. I may try seeding an area or 2 and see what happens. I think they are pretty.

I use grow bags for mint & greenstalk planter one layer.
I put mint right in the middle of my rain gutter garden and it does try it's hardest to spread but it's fairly easy to control because every time I see a sprout I can pull it up and pull the underground runner back to the designated area.
Same, it’s now embedded in my grass too.

Basil is one of the plants I have trouble growing. So far this year, the seed are not germinating. Last year same result. My tomatoes and peppers are growing nicely.
Have you grown African blue basil? It is perennial in hardiness zone 10. It attracts SO MANY bees! It may be perennial in zone 9 with a little protection. It doesn’t produce seeds and blooms continuously! No need to deadhead or remove blooms.
Your book has served me well. I grow basil everywhere. 😂
for the 3rd year i have been using their many colored 6-pack trays "6 Cell Plug Tray Inserts Colors" that are absolutely perfect. being smaller, they are easy to handle. different colors allow for color coding. they are a perfect fit for my 1020 trays. and have the same air prune and finger hole as the big trays. just a lot easier to manage when comes time to pop the plants out and plant. the material is food safe and very durable. they are all like new on this 3rd spring of use. they are not cheap, but they are a one-time investment 🙂
I sow cosmos and this year I will be planting alyssum and chamomile with the cosmos as cut flowers. Any tips for any plants thanks again
I have the book! Label? This takes all the fun out of guessing what you planted, what are weeds growing in the soil, and is that a flower you planted or can I eat this?

I saw you talk about rats in the garden. I’ve been cutting some of the top off a Powerade bottle and putting 1/2 cup = flour, 1/2 cup = baking soda and add a little powdered sugar mixture into those bottles. Just add a little in each bottle and lay them around where mice and rats might be. It will not bother anyone or anything except those rats an mice. They can’t burp and will go out away looking for water. It’s worked for me.

You can overdo clover in pastures. I don't know about cows, but my friend's horse foundered badly eating too much clover, and they almost lost her. The vet bill was huge as she had to be at the vet hospital for about a month.
Hello, thank you for all the information. I do have a question, and i apologize if you have mentioned this before. On another channel who does a whole host of things, the person had planted seedlings, and discovered mold and algae and used cinnamon to combat this problem. Can you or would you explain this to me? I like those seed trays Brian , but the guys at Bootstrap need to arrange a european outlet to help reduce shipping costs for people over the pond. Shipping is just crazy, otherwise I would have an order in. They look sturdy and reusable for years. Good for the enviorment in the long run.
Have you any views on cinnamon powder as a soil anti virus for seedlings, either in powder form or water mixed. I used it last year with no negitave results and no damping off.
Brian, I'm letting my mustard greens and broccoli go to seed to save them. They have the seed pods on them, but they are still green. Can I pull up the bush and hang them to dry, or do they have to stay in the ground until they are completely dry?

Could you do a video on the “not science” companion planting. Like, what is bunk. Ive been companion planting for several years and I think I’m doing it right but I’m wondering if I am doing some of the things you say are not science based.
What about Marigolds? They seem to attract everything, good and bad, and are beautiful.i plant the 3 foot tall yellow ones and they're stunning! 😀
I got several Marigold seed varieties this year that are not yellow. One is described as coffee and cream and I forget the other. I can't wait to see what they look like.

If you have those giant worms on tomatoes, have you tried planting fennel near the tomatoes? I found out by accident one year, the worms prefer the fennel over the tomatoes!

Mold! I have seedlings growing and with BT, fans, H2O2, vermiculite, etc., there are NO fungus gnats which plagued me for the last few years. This is awesome! I'm using a combination of seedling mix, pearlite and peat moss but with the SLIGHTEST bit of surface moisture for a few hours, mold covers the soil in a thick gray layer. What the heck? Any ideas?
too much moisture.. i water from below..I saw one spot in one cell and ripped cover dome off and set them in sun - toothpic off mold dipped qtip in tiny bit hydrogen peroxide and water to scrape off top surface of soil and sun bathing rest of day. any other ideas?
@@savvy2639 Tank you. I water from the bottom, but sometimes the surface gets moist. I have a fan blowing on it as well. I'm spraying the soil surface with 1:1 hydrogen peroxide and water, and it's dramatically suppressing the mold. I'm trying it on some crummy reject plant to make sure it doesn't harm the plants. Actually, the plants seem rejuvenated! Anyway, if this works, it's cheap and very easy to do. I have sprayed Brussels sprouts with straight 3% H2O2 to get rid of aphids and it killed the aphids and the Brussels sprouts looked great afterward. We'll see.
@bob - hydrogen peroxide and water seems to catch it quick enough - hope all goes well for you. 👍🏻
@@savvy2639 Follow-up. The H2O2 blast knocked down the mold a lot! I am applying a 5:1 solution of H2O2 in a spray to the soil surfaces and the tomato, eggplant, and pepper foliage. The leaves look great, and the mold is almost non-existent and waning. Looks like another tool for my bag of tricks!

Girl, I just turned 54 and have had a lot of gray/white hair for years and stopped coloring it a few years ago.
That white was sooo thick around the front that it was not even like a strip, it was awkward looking.
I have changed both my water and my diet, carnivore leaning now and cutting out the ultra processed foods mostly. I buy the baby distilled water from Walmart for myself and pets.
Ummm, I noticed a couple weeks ago that my hair is growing back in dark, not white now!!! It's been doing it so long that I have all this dark that came in over top of some white that has not yet fallen out. It's so odd looking when I put it in a ponytail or bun and it's getting warm now so I chopped it in a Bob for the spring and summer.
Looking it now, even in pictures I can see a huge difference. I don't mind the white hair, but our hair is a reflection of inner health and obviously that inner health is better now than before.
People and pets get nutrients from food though, so use the filtered water, at least if you have fluoride in your water. That is not removed by most filter or boiling and is flat out poison.

The only luck I've had with any of those plants were camomile 😢 I can't grow the rest to save my life.

Basil WILL NOT deter all flying pests. My basil got infested with gnat-like buggers last year that destroyed the leaves. No amount of safe, organic pesticide affected the nasties. Worst of all, the plants were indoors in my over-wintering "tent" when I noticed the infestation. The plants must have had eggs hidden on them somewhere. You can bet I will be more diligent in keeping an eye on things this coming year.
Sounds like fungus gnats, I put yellow bug sticky paper near my indoor seedlings and plants. The adult gnats get stuck on it. You have to keep the sticky paper up long enough to catch all the gnats that grow up from eggs and larva. Do not use outside though as may also catch good bugs, like ladybugs, and pollinators.
Also, beware, when you bring in new pots or plants with soil from somewhere else, as they may have fungus gnats too and you will have to put up sticky paper again.
@@lf4061 Thanks for the advice. I probably won't be over-wintering any more plants, but I plan will start new seedlings (or rooting cuttings) just to grow in my indoor "terrarium" year-round. I have automated lights, heaters, fans, irrigation, and plenty of space. Been pondering even trying a small experimental hydroponic vegetable setup.
Don't grow alyssum or hyssop next to your brassicas. Flea beetles LOVE those just as much as the brassicas, but will still decimate your veggies if those two are planted too close by. I put my cabbage near my hyssop one year not knowing this and learned the hard way.
Ok, I did some research: Do you mean "Lobularia maritima" when you say "Alyssum"?
If yes, this belongs to the family "Brassicaceae" Or in other words. several common oil seeds and lots of other edible plants which must be rotated in the garden due to illnesses. This means that a flower of the same kind increases the need to rotate, or rather prevents me from planting brassica completely. Besides the necessary info that this is a subtropical plant for which it is too cold in northern areas.
So, at the end of the day a very bad choice for my neck of the woods.
Crimson clover? I weed other kinds of clover a lot, the only redeeming quality is that bees love em, but they are very annoying in the garden.

THANK YOU IN ADVANCE!!! I first noticed negative results following rain and think this MAY(?) be the reason and, before I plant everything in my uncovered garden, would like to know if other arrangements need to be made for a healthy harvest.
I'm going to try micro clover between plants for mulch this year.. it stays short.. we will see how that works out. 🤞
