Those slippery, tiny, studio, mountain.roads. LOL! I love this one and think the murder scene, in fact all the scenes in the mountains, are so suspenseful and imaginative. I also love the scene you mention In" Dark Passage" between Aggie & Bogey. Two seasoned pros having at it and giving it all they've got. I remember the first time I saw it and she went out that window, it was so unexpected I screamed. Another similar scene, which has the same effect for me, is the confrontation and murder scene between Charles Laughton and Rita Johnson in " The Big Clock". Thanks for watching. Steve
No one can get to the heart and soul of a film, add tons of movie history and throw in a few tidbits of gossipy fun like Steve Hayes can. And all in less than ten minutes!!! I could listen to you talk film all day long. Thank you for another fabulous edition of "Tired Old Queen At The Movies"...
Thank you for your tremendous selection and spot on Rose Hobart!! And as a card carrying Member of "Team Alexis Smith" I really appreciate this as well. A wonderful visit today. I LOVE TOQATM!!❤😎
Thanks so much! I got to see Alexis on broadway in a musical called "Platinum" and she sat behind me once at the theatre. Gorgeous, talenetd and SO CHIC! Happy New Year! ...and VIVA ROSE HOBART!
Man,you have still got it!! And your impersonations are unbeatable. The best! If anyone thinks that Bogart was a one dimensional character, suggest they watch The African Queen! Carry on!
Well done. Bogart and Bacall are great favorites of mine. There was a little dive bar in Akron, Ohio next to the Civic Theater. Whitelaw's is gone now but back in the 80s and 90s I went there a couple of times. They had photos on the walls of celebrities that were taken when they had visited. I recall a great old b/w of Bogart and Bacall probably taken in the 40s. Torn down now to make room for some generic building with no character at all.
Happy New Year, another awesome review,, will not have to watch this. Have you ever did a review of Scarlett Street? Would love to see that as it is one of my all-time favorite noir's. Still hope one day you do a 60's British kitchen sink drama. So thrilled to see your suscriber numbers going up,well-deserved.
When I see a Bogart film up on TOQATM, I hit the like button before I watch. Oh, goodness, what am I saying; I click the like button every time I start watching you, Steve! Bul I'm just wondering how (after all this time (and you don't look a DAY older!)) you've not talked about my favorite Bogie movie, The African Queen? Please? You may have the Fountain of Youth, but I'm not getting any younger here! Au revoir, chere! Don't know where you call home, but stay safe! We sure do need you! 🌟🌟🌟🌟
Thanks so much and for reminding this queen to add "The African Queen" to the list. So nice of you to say so. Happy New Year! And rememebr, you're as young as I feel!...wait...well, you get the gist.
@STEVEHAYESTOQ Oh! Was that what I felt? Ooooh! I seem to remember the plot of Conflict in some other movie (or a similar plotline). It sounds like something in a Gothic horror film. (It'll come to me eventually.) But, hey, a good twist is a good twist, right?
Good to see you back on UA-cam so soon in 2025! I've yet to see CONFLICT! but i see there's a Warner Archive blu-ray, so it's on my wishlist after watching your review. Bad-boy Bogie movies are my favorites.
What a wonderful surprise. I love this genre. I always learn more history of cinema. Another great review. Thanks to you and Johnny and all those involved.🌈♥
I LOOVVE this film, and "The Two Mrs. Carrolls" which I hope you review soon! Two of my favs, and leave it to Warners for the atmosphere! I so admire the set designer ( having been in stage design in school myself) for believably recreating a realistic mountain highway in the sound stage! Funny when you realize that the Warners studio is literally within walking distance from the Angeles Crest hwy. and REAL roads that look just like that ( I'm sure that's what inspired the set). Anyway thank you for this, a blessed distraction from all the fires here.❤
You are so welcome. Stay safe and my love and prayers go out to everyone in Los Angeles during this dreadful time. I much prefer things shot on the studio as well. The mountain scenes are my favorite. SO imaginative. Best Wishes & Thanks for watching! Steve
Happy New Year Steve ❤ Thank you ❣️ Have you done "In a Lonely Place" ? I think it is one of Bogart's most complex performances. I just discovered it last year and I keep watching it.
@@STEVEHAYESTOQ She was great in this movie. I heard they originally Betty Bacall in the roll but she didn't want it. I am so glad because I think Graham is actually a much better actress. She has the Bacall cool sassy but she also has sorrow and tenderness that BB just didn't have. Oh well. I look forward to all of your reviews and can't wait for this one. You sent me down a rabbit hole I just watched Conflict and the Two Mrs. Carols. Peace and Blessings
Happy New Year Steve and Johnny. Starting the year with a boilermaker, Bogie and Greenstreet, I love it. I will get this one. Maybe I should pull a stack of Bogart movies for the next snow storm, and have a Bogie festival. And Steve I really love your Bogie voice.
Thanks...didn't want people to think I only did Bette Davis, Susan Hayward & Barbara Stanwyck. LOL! Thanks so much for watching! and the Bogie festival sounds like a sure fire winner on cold winter nights. Steve
I just love watching you talking about all of these films. And you admiration and impressions are fantastic. You make me want to watch these films ASAP. Thank you.
Ooh goody! I was wanting to watch a good _noir_, and here's one with Bogart, Greenstreet AND a recommendation from Steve (which means it'll be well worthwhile)! 😊
Another film I need to see. Sydney Greenstreet looks like the great Irish character actor, Barry Fitzgerald, the villain from the 19 40s film, And Then There Was None.
Another stellar review!! I have never heard of this movie but now I can't wait to see it. I am unfamiliar with Rose Hobart but when you likened her to Gale Sondergaard, bells went off! One of my favorite supporting actresses Your comment "I love car wrecks in movies!" caught me by surprise and I can't stop laughing about it! I don't know why but it just sounds like something Bette Davis could have said. .
Hooray! Nuthin' like being compared to Bette! Car wrecks in classic movies are always so stylish, with the editing and the film scores behind them. So dramatic! Oh, well... Thanks for watchjing! Steve
Great as always, Steve. On my "must watch" list! And, you are right about car wrecks in the movies... the best! One of my favorites is the Vera Miles and John Gavin crash in "Back Street!"
This is one of my favorites, along with the combination train/car wreck in " The Greatest Show On Earth" where the circus train crashes into the car and sends it hurtling, before it crashes into the other section of the train. Spectacular, as only DeMille could make it.
Hi Steve. Always great to see you back. I love when you recommend a film that I haven't seen, and then I find it online and watch it. "Conflict" sounds like it should have been the title of a Hitchcock film. ("Suspicion" "Spellbound" "Notorious"). This is excellent. I can understand why Bogart didn't want to play an out-and-out villain as he does here. The ending is clever. For a while I was beginning to think I was the one losing my mind. That pawn shop thing really got to me. Next, I think I'll be looking for "The Two Mrs. Carrolls"!
Thanks, Judy. I love this one. One of the things I've tried to do over the years is to inroduce people to great little films that they might not be aware " Conflioct" absolutely fills the bill. Enjoy!
I've seen this, but it's been a long time. I remember liking but not loving it. Surely time for a re-watch/re-evaluation since I am a fan of both Bogart and Rose Hobart and ADORE Alexis Smith! Couldn't agree more with the fact that Warners misused her throughout her tenure there. They saw her as a pretty ornament and little else. Not that she wasn't always watchable, but it took until she left the studio and managed to find a few roles that gave her a better showcase ("The Sleeping Tiger" and her delightful turn in "This Happy Feeling" come to mind) to start to be able to show what she was capable of. To me she would have been an ideal Daisy Buchanan in 1949 version of The Great Gatsby. When I read Fitzgerald's description of the character in the novel, especially about her having a voice full of money, Alexis is who I pictured immediately. I'm a fan of Betty Field who did play the role but she was miscast, a real missed opportunity.
I agree. Alexis had an inate sophistication. So glad she got to prove her versatility later. She's also very good as an evil wife in another terrific noir called "Split Second" .
I dont remembee this one but I'll look for it.Bogie has always been my fave actor since I was a teenager.I used to go to Bogart double features at rhe Brattle Theatre. In Harvard Sq.Looking forward to this one!.Your reviews are so entertaining😂
I love this one. Bogart did a few that were great and snuck in under the radar so to speak. Thisone:, "The Two Mrs. Carrolls", " Across The Pacific" and "All Through the Night" come to mind. Enjoy!
Happy New Year, Steve! You've certainly left behind the warmth and love of your Christmas review of "I Remember Mama" with this one, haven't you: brace up, it's 2025 and it's murder (how true). I saw this film on television once, years ago, and the plot is so good that it's been pinched for minor plays I've seen over the years, but as you rightly say, Humphrey Bogart is a brilliant actor, and wonderful in this role. I think the only other time I've seen Rose Hobart was in "The Farmer's Daughter", but she didn't make very much impact on me, poor girl, given the competition. I do wish that at some time you would review "In A Lonely Place" because Humphrey Bogart wasn't just amazing in that, it was very brave of him to play such a role - plus it has Gloria Grahame, also wonderful. The BBC were wonderful to me and other old film fans over Christmas, by the way: a superb collection of Hitchcock films, all the best Agatha Christie films, plus "Brief Encounter", "Casablanca", "The Bishop's Wife" and on and on. I hope that you are well and surviving the cold weather (it's bitterly cold here too), and we over here watch the news footage from Los Angeles in horror. Let us hope for better times. Love, Alida - and of course all the very best to Johnny.
The horror and devastation in Los Angeles looms large and continues to burn over here. Several friends & people I know lost everything. This being such a large, divese country in terms of climate and terrain, it is subject to all sorts of natural disasters. We're all praying. I'm glad you had a Christmas bounty of movies. I was ill with a reperatory virus from Christmas until two days ago, when I fianlly got some anti-biotics and I'm finally feeling somewhat back to normal. I quaranteened myself the entire time to protect my loved ones, but was saved, thanks to a friend of mine who sent me a box of DVDs that were mostly Brit Murder series! A veritable jackpot! I relished every one; " Grantchester", "Silent Witness", "Endeavor", as well as eight seasons of the Lt Dalgleash mysteries and to top it off, all eight of the "Prime Suspect" series" w/ Helen Mirren. So, aside from the holiday classics, I got to delve into a bit of "moidah"...which is probably where the desire to do "Conflict" arose from. I hope this finds you feeling better, My Friend. Here's to more classics films & happy correspondence in the New Year! Best Wishes; Steve
Happy New Year, and all the best to you both in 2025🎉 I thought that I’d seen every Bogie film then here we are! A “new” film noir gem to watch! Thanks so much for the great spoiler-free review, and I’ll definitely look “Conflict” up 😬!
I missed this one. Now it's on my radar. I only like a handful of Bogart movies and was always alarmed at how he was continually cast in the romantic lead considering the fact he was homely as hell. I truly have no problem putting other actors in his roles in my imagination. Still, he was given some great stories so I tend to follow him for those. This appears to be one. 👍
I've never heard of this one, but I'll be sure to see it now. I always liked Alexis Smith but I don't think there was ever an "Alexis Smith film". I think of her as the wife or girlfriend of Errol Flynn or Gershwin or Cole Porter in films. I've never heard of Rose Hobart at all. This one does sound good.
Roes started out as a leading lady on Broadway and played in some early '30's films. She then gradually became one of the "other women" on movies and that is what she's primarily known for.
Ooh. I think this is the first film you’ve done I’ve never heard of. I might have seen it 50 years ago as a kid, BBC used to show a lot of 40s film noirs and my parents always watched them, they’d seen them at the time, and I watched with them, I knew all the 40s star, not many of the contemporary ones! I just check out where I can see it.
Steve, I hope you watched the new blu ray edition. George Feltenstein and his crew at the Warner Archive restored it from the original nitrate camera negative a few months ago and it's a vast improvement over the print that was used for the previous DVD which you are showing in this video.
Well Steve, you might be a little bit tired plus royal but, these certainly do not detract from your ever-youthful self and likewise reviews! (As to these, as well as being hipped to the details plus overall, but also as ENTERTAINED UNIQUELY as well ! 😂) I'd never seen this one of Bogie's but now certainly will, being all armed with such detailage and stimulated interest. All my best to yourself and Johnny, for this New Year.
What's amazing, IMHO, how the youth ridicule the studio system, and yet how many classics were manufactured with or without star approval. Am i just old and lost in bittersweet nostalgia?
I feel embarrassed that I have just found your channel!! As an Australian who collects Australian daybills it’s great to see you use daybills in some of your thumbnails
I’ve seen the movie conflict many times. I like it very much. I don’t think it’s a great movie but it’s a wonderful movie for the performances and the story. To me it’s the first of 3 movies/made for TV movies. There’s the movie conflict and then I think in the 70s there was the same plot and it had James Franciscus and Jack Klugman. And then it was made again with the same plot with Elliott Gould and Margo Kidder. So if you can get those three movies together watch them one at a time.
Ill be honest - your review of Conflict is much better than Conflict, lol! I've seen 73/75 Bogie movies and put this toward the bottom. Swing Your Lady territory!!😂😁
This is probably like 2nd tier Bogie in terms of quality but I just find films like this and Dark Passage really entertaining. There’s some pre Vertigo scenes in this, especially when he sees the woman in the apartment and then she’s gone.
I love your channel. I just recently came across it. I would love for you to do a full-blown review of MGM's 1936 The Great Ziegfield. I would love to hear your comments.
Welcome aboard! I hope you subscribe, so I can bring you another classic every month. I'll put "The Great Ziegfeld" on my " To Do" list. Thanks for watching! Steve
I beg to differ but I have seen the movie conflict many times and the wife is not a harpy. I don’t know why you would say that. Well I know why you’re saying it because you’re watching the conversation at the beginning when she already knows that her husband is in love with her sister. But the wife is not a harpy. - She is upset and frustrated that her husband no longer loves her. And I would ask, how do you compete with a younger version of yourself?
The wife is not a harpy!!! Geezzz… In fact, the wife Katherine comes across as a self possessed, intelligent woman Who takes very good care of the house and takes very good care of her husband. But I gave you a thumbs up for your review anyway.
Hooray! What a surprise and pleasant diversion from checking on the weather! Love You Steve and Johnny! Thank You! ❤

Boagrt did five with Greenstreet and Greestreet did nine films with his most constant co-star, Peter Lorre.
love the Follies reference...have a happy 2025
You too! My favorite Sondheim score.
Happy new year Steve … how did this film get by me.. thanks for the fantastic review I’m going to watch it asap. Love your impersonations of Bogart …
Thanks, Judy. I love this one. One of the things I've tried to do over the years is to inroduce people to great little films that they might not be aware " Conflioct" absolutely fills the bill. Enjoy!
Love this movie , your reviews are always such a treat 😊😊
Thanks so much! So glad you watch and enjoy the films.
Steve and Johnny, Happy Mew Year! So great to see you both well.
Oh-I forget-have you done the 1954 A Star is Born?
Cheers!😊🎉
It's on my "To Do" list. Thanks for the reminder and for watching! Steve
I love Jack Warner stories. Whadda character!
Yeah...I'd rather have watched them from afar than been part of the action. LOL!
@@STEVEHAYESTOQ Agreed! 🤣
Great editing !!
Right? I love this one.
One of Bogart’s best! I loved Alexis Smith! Remember her on Dallas? Playing Howard Keel’s not so together sister
I loved her when she played a bad girl like " The Two Mrs Carrolls" or 'Split Second".
Happy New Year, and all the best to you both in 2025🎉 I thought that I’d seen every Bogie film then here we are! A “new” film noir gem to watch! Thanks so much for the great spoiler-free review, and I’ll definitely look “Conflict” up 😬!
Good! I think you'll like it! Thanks for watching!
I think it is. Tight direction, production value and script with a superb supporting cast. I think you'll lioke it! Thanks for watching! Steve
Absolutely killer set up, a must watch boys and gurls.
Happy new year!
I think so. Good ole' Warner's noir. Nuthin' like it for the winter nights!
You must be a mind reader. This is one of the movies in my queue. I love this movie. Sidney Greenstreet was great in this.
It's really a tight little suspenser with great perfromances from all concerned.
Thanks for posting this, ypu are a cheery sight, hope your 2025 is going great.
I'm sure it will be, once it will be once it get's going. Happy New Year!
I must see this movie!
It'll surprise you. I think you'll be delighted.
Great review
Thanks!
Steve, have you noticed WB always had Buicks? 1941 Buicks always in their forties film noirs.
Great! I love the look of 'em! Although I wouldn't wanna be in an accident in one. Like a tank!
Lee J Cobb also got Anne Revere black list too
Yup. Bad times, hard times.
Thanks Steve
My pleasure. Thanks for watching!
I've always enjoyed this movie. I find it better than advertised. Always like your entertaining/informative reviews.
Thank you. I'm so glad I could bring this film to so many people's attention, it's one of my favorites.
Delightful, Steve. Great work. Btw, have you done Desert Fury? JUST A SUGGESTION. Anyway, love this!
It's on my "To Do" list! Glorious color, hot Burt Lancaster and the great Mary Astor in a terrific role.
Ooooooh I don't know how this movie passed me by! That's this Saturday afternoons plan Bogart and eat the last of the chocolate left from Christmas
Save some for the Tired Old Queeen, woud ya? LOL! Enjoy!
@STEVEHAYESTOQ happy new year doll face!
It's a great old Wanrber Bros noir. Wiuth thos egreat character actors, headed by Sydney Greenstreet and Bogie to boot! Enjoy!
Steve, I hope you watched the new blu ray edition. George Feltenstein and his crew at the Warner Archive restored it from the original nitrate camera negative a few months ago and it's a vast improvement over the print that was used for the previous DVD which you are showing in this video.
Great! I'll get it! I love this film. Thanks so much!
Well Steve, you might be a little bit tired plus royal but, these certainly do not detract from your ever-youthful self and likewise reviews! (As to these, as well as being hipped to the details plus overall, but also as ENTERTAINED UNIQUELY as well ! 😂)
I'd never seen this one of Bogie's but now certainly will, being all armed with such detailage and stimulated interest.
All my best to yourself and Johnny, for this New Year.
And our very best to you, James. Thanks for the comments/compliments and for watching! Happy New Year!
What's amazing, IMHO, how the youth ridicule the studio system, and yet how many classics were manufactured with or without star approval. Am i just old and lost in bittersweet nostalgia?
If you, are, move over, so I can join you! LOL!
I kept waiting for Sydney Greenstreet to ask Bogart, "You know how to whistle, don't you Dick? You just pucker up and blow!"
Right line, wrong gender. LOL!
@@STEVEHAYESTOQ Would it work better with Peter Lorre??
Loved it, Bogie at his best.
I think so too! Glad you liked it and thanks for watching!
Darling Steve I've never seen Conflict I sure am now always a pleasure never a car wreak with you you always make me laugh 😂😂❤
I reserve the car wrecks for the movies and my love life. LOL! Enjoy and thanks for the compliment!
Thanks for the recommendation. You give a most seductive and delightful encapsulation of this movie. Now I've got to see it.
Hooray! Mission accomplished!
*Renault* : I like to think that you killed a man thats just the romantic in me
*Rick* : 😥
Frenchie: "There aren't any waters in " Casablanca." Rick: " I was misinformed."
I feel embarrassed that I have just found your channel!! As an Australian who collects Australian daybills it’s great to see you use daybills in some of your thumbnails
I hope you subscribe so i can vsist you every month with another classic film. Luv daybills.
Well, obviously the formula works. Thanks for the recommendation and for watching!
Ill be honest - your review of Conflict is much better than Conflict, lol!
I've seen 73/75 Bogie movies and put this toward the bottom. Swing Your Lady territory!!😂😁
Not to me. It's one of my favorites. But...different strokes for different folks. Thanks for the compliment and for watching. Steve
You can do Sidney Greenstreet!
I can’t. But I can do Pat Hingle and Vivian Vance.
Why not? You never saw them in the same roo. LOL!
This is probably like 2nd tier Bogie in terms of quality but I just find films like this and Dark Passage really entertaining. There’s some pre Vertigo scenes in this, especially when he sees the woman in the apartment and then she’s gone.
I love these better than some of the more famous ones. But that's me for ya. Enjoy.
Steve
Good way to start 2025!
I think so too! Thanks for watching!
well ' i have to find this some where '''
Keep lookin'. It'll turn up eventually. They usually do. Thanks for watching!
@@STEVEHAYESTOQ your very welcome ''
I beg to differ but I have seen the movie conflict many times and the wife is not a harpy. I don’t know why you would say that. Well I know why you’re saying it because you’re watching the conversation at the beginning when she already knows that her husband is in love with her sister. But the wife is not a harpy. - She is upset and frustrated that her husband no longer loves her. And I would ask, how do you compete with a younger version of yourself?
Beats me. Thanks for watching!
The wife is not a harpy!!! Geezzz… In fact, the wife Katherine comes across as a self possessed, intelligent woman Who takes very good care of the house and takes very good care of her husband.
But I gave you a thumbs up for your review anyway.
Thanks for watching!
I've seen this a few times. It's pretty far-fetched but the cast, and cinematography make it work.
It's alot of fun and it moves at a great pace like all the Warner's noirs.
We don’t know whether the husband broke Katherine’s neck. We do know that he kills her and sits the body in the car and pushes the car over.
Mission accomplished. .
@@STEVEHAYESTOQ…. I’m sorry but that reply is a little macabre. I don’t know about anyone else but I had great sympathy for Kathryn the wife.
