Carl, thanks for your inspiring movies. I just pulled my old wood lathe out today gave it a bit of a clean up and had enough stuff to make my wife a pen. I forgot how much i enjoyed turning, now the hunt beings for some turning wood. Thanks again it's good to watch a craftsman at work.
Great to hear. The search is half the fun, love to see some pictures. I am on Facebook and it is easy to post and share pictures there. Thank you, Carl
Nice job. I'm a recent subscriber and stumbled across this project from 2010. Perfect project for what I've wanted to do for my adolescent granddaughters. The only difference is that I will use battery powered votive candles for safety reasons.
Hi, You can put author coat of wax on after your done sanding to seal the mineral oil. The mineral oil will leave a ring for awhile but it will dry I put my stuff on a paper towel and let it dry. Thanks, Carl
Hi Kirk, Thank you, I cut into both you want to cup out the bottom out a little so it sits flat. I'll try and round them up and get you a list. Take care, Carl
Yet another great turning video Carl... I would love to see how you actually separate a project from a glue block... I'm a total 'newbie' and have tried a lot of different things that you've shown in your video's, but have never seen you or any other turn separate their project from the glue block... I'm a little hesitate to try a 'parting tool' to separate the pieces until I see how the 'experts' do it... Again, thanks for all you do and safe carving to you!
Thanks Carl - great video. My only concern is the wedding ring (if you will forgive me for saying so). I have seen hands with the wedding ring finger missing due to the ring getting caught whilst doing mechanical/tool work. Cheers, Steve
There where only 2 little spots. It was cabinet grade plywood pieces. I think there were 7 plies. As you come over the top of it the and looking down the rings are wider at the top and narrow as you go down. It looks kinda cool. Different colored plies in it.
The Nova Chuck will work on a Shopsmith lathe. The Nova Chuck needs an adapter to work with each different lathe. They have an adapter that fits the Shopsmith.
Nice little project but I did notice that the tools in use rack seem to be in a dangerous place, could cut short your gene pool.....stay safe and merry Christmas
Hey, Carl! I just wanted to ask, what was your biggest disaster while working on a lathe? For example, once, my chisel got caught in the axis and it pulled the chisel out of it's handle. Love the videos
I've just been browsing through some of your videos tonight and came upon this one. I like the final shape of the piece, and the beads add a nice accent to it. I was curious, when you're sanding with your wax and mineral oil, do you wipe off the piece between grits of sandpaper? I would think you'd get a kind of slurry of the wax mixture and dust along with grit from the sandpaper. I dry sand with my dust collector on but I always wipe the piece down between grits. I was Just wondering.
Hey Carl really love your work just have 2 questions. what's the wax u put on the piece and can u direct me to your first video because the oldest one doesn't seem to be the first. Thanks
Great vid Carl, thanks.. Question: I've heard you say that after sanding you will seal with wax. Can you expand on that comment or show what your doing. Like others I've had issues with the mineral oil & paste wax sanding and leaving it as such it has pealed the finish off a desk top where it was in contact. So I'm thinking I'm missing a final step. I have treated the sanding as the final.. Thoughts..
Simple but beautiful little project! Carl, when you parted off, did you cut into the candle holder wood or the piece that was chucked into the lathe? (Obviously a newbie question...) Also, when you wrote a couple weeks ago that you read a lot of books when starting out. You think maybe you could share either some of those or if that was to long ago, some good ones available today. Unless you already have a video talking about that, just post the link to it. Thanks, Kirk
Hi Carl ! Very nice vid, once again !! At how much RPM are you turning tour piece of wood just afer glueing it ? (when using roughing gouge) ? Thanks in advance ! Philippe
I know its been a long time sense u made it but how did u make that lathe tool holder in the back ground i need to make one and i thought u can give me good instructions.
Theoretically, Yes, But not only does the hole get cleaner with the woodturning tools, the forstner bit also leaves a tiny hole in the middle from its starting point. If you sand it a bit and don't care about the hole (which is later covered anyways) then yes, use a forstner bit.

guess what everyone is getting for Christmas! What a lovely project for showing off a piece of good wood.
That bead tool is the best cheat I’ve seen yet! I’m going to get one.
Yes they work great!
Great to hear. The search is half the fun, love to see some pictures. I am on Facebook and it is easy to post and share pictures there.
Thank you,
Carl
I can spend hours watching your vids! Thanxs so much!
Beautiful work. The only thing I miss about these videos are the dimensions. It is very important to choose the right diameter to height ratio.
absolutely first class as usual. many thanks from the U.K.

I'll try and round them up and get you a list.
Take care,
Carl
Really nice quick project! Great Christmas gift idea. Thank you Mr. Carl 🙏
Thank you!
It's paste wax with a little bit of mineral oil. My first video was on turning a duck call.
Haha, it's relaxing to watch this guy work..Good job as always!
Thank you, These are fun quick projects.
I'm almost done with the lidded bowl. Have to get a couple of more coats of lacquer on it.
Thank you Keith,
Happy New Year,
Carl
Thank you, I just use the parting tool it works great.
Thank you.
Beautiful work! Nice touch using mineral oil and automotive paste wax while sanding.
+Ben Mallon Thank you very much Ben!
I used your idea for a birthday gift for my wife, using mesquite from my wood pile.
I read a lot of books when I was starting out.

Thank you Steve, ya I don't wear it anymore while turning.
@@CarlJacobson Good to hear! Happy new year, may it be a great one for you. Cheers, Steve
Beautiful work, looks really nice with the crack too!
/Nic.
Muito bonito seu trabalho você Carl e o Erik é muito bom aprendo muito com vocês abracos!!!
Yes, I wipe it off between each of the sanding grits, so I am not sanding the slurry into the piece.
Thanks,
Carl
Hi Hadi,
Thank you,
Nice one Carl, think I`ll try one tmoro. Cheers
Hi Tom,
I'm always looking at what other tuners are doing. I look at things and think how can I do that on the lathe too.
Nice job.
Thank you Tim!
Thank you,
Hi Carl. Never thought to learn how to do this the way it should be ?
I’m from Kuwait ... And i wont to tel you that you have golden hands

Hi Martin, I've had a few things come apart on me like bowls.
Man you are so good
@letslipthedogs I've never tried cork but it might work. Do you know where you can buy thick cork?
Nice little project but I did notice that the tools in use rack seem to be in a dangerous place, could cut short your gene pool.....stay safe and merry Christmas
@MrLeonard55 Did you need to fill in the voids in the plywood?
hola muy lindo, pero que es eso que le pasas al final un barniz? o una pasta para pulirlo para que quede mas suave :) :) :-),,,,
Awesome.
hola y gracias, muy lindo trabajo,,,
Do you have a video explaining how you use your sandpaper with oils?
I sand with Howard or Doctor's Walnut oil to reduce the sanding dust. amzn.to/30V9wb7

Its paste wax and mineral oil I mix it together.

@hpmedghalchi They make round sharping stones but I just use a piece of sand paper on a dowel. I don't have the instruction sheet sorry.
Thank you, Yes I can make you one is there a type of wood you would like?
Take care,
Carl
Thank you, :)

@EdBoonSucks It's a Nova Chuck you can find them on the web.
thanks friend, for your video ok. SERGIO PEREZ (MÉXICO).
Thanks
very nice, will have a go at that, are they safe with heat from candle base
Thank you Graham! Yes I think it's pretty safe.
Nice.
Thank you Richard!
Hi Carl !
Very nice vid, once again !!
At how much RPM are you turning tour piece of wood just afer glueing it ? (when using roughing gouge) ?
Thanks in advance !
Philippe
Thank you Philippe! I'm turning around 2000 rpm
Yes it would be easier if you had the right size forstner bit.
Fantastic job. Can i as what brand of paste wax and mineral oil you used?
Thank you Rich! I now use Howard beeswax and orange oil. astore.amazon.com/thewood0c-20/detail/B00DKWRNZ0
Are you using beeswax for sandind your candle holder ?
I know its been a long time sense u made it but how did u make that lathe tool holder in the back ground i need to make one and i thought u can give me good instructions.
Outdoorsmen1214 I used 1 1/2" and 2" PVC pipe I just screwed the caps down to the shelf. It works pretty well, but they do fill up with shavings.
@haydenHD
hi please can you tell me where to find the beading tools i cant seem to find them on the web
Bob
I laminated some plywood together and made one. It was ok.
Show, what rpm do you use? Thanks
Whats the polish you use Carl, can it be made from scratch?
Where do you get the inspiration for your projects?
just wow! :D
Hi Carl sorry to bother you. What is the rough size of your maple bowl blank that you used here? Thanks
Hi Owen, I think it was about 6"
@EdBoonSucks I just try to get it close.
A tea light candle is about 40 mm diameter ... Isn't it easier to use a Forstner drill bit ?
Theoretically, Yes, But not only does the hole get cleaner with the woodturning tools, the forstner bit also leaves a tiny hole in the middle from its starting point. If you sand it a bit and don't care about the hole (which is later covered anyways) then yes, use a forstner bit.
@6Zorongos el esta usando cera en ingles es "beeswax"
@MrLeonard55 I got it very cool.
How did u learnv
@MrRhb08 Hi Bob, I got them at Woodcraft,
Those are nice tealights, but I'll stick to my cheap bulk pack tealights from target :)
good....
What is the paint material
I sand with Howard beeswax www.amazon.com/dp/B001BKQYGW/?ref=exp_thewoodshoptv_lv_dp_vv_d
you are wonderful
Thank you Mohamed!
I sent you a pic.
Thank you,
