+FlatScreenNinja You have no idea. Go take a look at numberphile's videos on Klein Bottles. THAT is enthusiasm. That said, this is still above average and like he said - if you don't enjoy what you're doing, you're doing it for the wrong reason :)
I was there in 2013, and he showed me around like I was the most important customer ever. Great to "see" him again, and see that he is still in business. He asked me to bring him some bottled soda from Denmark, so I´ll do that the next time I visit LA :) Thanks Tom!
This guy’s enthusiasm must be powered by relentless soda consumption. I’ll have a bottle. What a super video; I’m going to make a stop next time I’m in the area.
+Benjamin Davis Haha If only you knew the "real" John. Most Highland Park locals who frequent Galco's will tell you about a very different side of John and how he treats his customers and employees. John Nese is the polar opposite in person to how he acts in this interview.
Yep. I promise I'm not making that up. I live less than a mile from Galco's and I love the place and go there about once a week still for a sandwich. I love everything about Galco's and all the employees save for boss man John are really friendly and great. He just rubs me and many other locals the wrong way with how rude he can be. Funny, cause he seems like the nicest guy in the world when he interviews with Huell. :-) R.I.P. Huell Howser purplegill10
+flyingscotsmanreport Puns aside, John was lovely! He spent ages showing me round - there's a proper long-form documentary about him and his shop on UA-cam somewhere, too.
I've been to Galco's too many times to count, and I've probably had maybe two to three hundred different sodas from there. There are just so many flavors. Having moved away from Los Angeles though, I'm glad that other soda stores have followed suit and are more readily available. Places like Sugarland and Rocket Fizz have a good selection.
Credit to you Tom Scott. Not only for presenting this, but also for not having some big ego that meant you had to talk over this guy. He was delightful, you obviously realized that and let him do the talking. You are a GREAT presenter. But so are a few other people (not many). This guy is one of them. Kudos.

This guy inspires me massively. When you said you were making a video about this place, I wasn't expecting to like it. Huge surprise. I really like the fact that you built this whole thing out of an interview. Very cool.
People wonder why I smile so much, and it's mostly because of things like this. It just helps me be happy day to day to know that somewhere out there. there's a happy man selling cucumber sodas! Spontaneity, authenticity, and originality. Those are the things I love your channel for, and if they go at a cost of (some) production value, i could not care less. Fantastic find, and a great short portrait of an awesome man! Keep doing what your doing, John and Tom both!
+ExaltedDuck John mentioned Huell Howser to me - and I know him from that wonderful clip of the Fotoplayer that's been going round the internet. The thing is, Huell was always better at human interest stories and interviews -- I need to improve on that, because I tend to focus on infrastructure and "things" rather than people!
That you've heard of him and know a bit about his career and persona just confounds me. =D I don't think anyone could ever replace him, but I do see a parallel in your ability to sniff out interesting bits of history, trivia, and oddities hiding in plain sight. Thanks for the vids. They're always interesting and enlightening.
+Tom Scott I even think I saw an episode where Huell Howser visited this very shop. This made me think of him and was going to mention it, but someone already had. I'll miss Huell, but you're doing a damn well great job! Keep it up :)
John is such an enthusiatic and happy person. I would personally travel to Los Angeles if i can and stop by just to say hello to him and buy the sodas he has. You are awesome john!
+TheWingrider92 Yep. I considered trying to use a lens correction filter on it, but it just looked weird in a Matrix-glitchy way as opposed to weird in a fisheye way!
I used to live ~3 miles from Galco's. I would occasionally take my son there and let him pick out 2 sodas and 2 candy bars. Better that getting a 2-liter bottle of mass market junk. Tom didn't mention the candy section. Oh my.
"... You gotta be happy with what you do, if you're not happy with what you do, you're doing it for the wrong reason." From now on I'm going by that quote...
Moxie! From New England! "What this world needs is more Moxie". I don't care for the stuff personally but every time we go back East dad picks several bottles/cans up. Great Memories. I can appreciate a place like this and hear what he's saying about small soda companies. Thanks for the video. That was great!
I'm from western Pennsylvania, and I couldn't help noticing the cases of "Natrona" soda in the background- it's made relatively close to where I live! It's also called Red ribbon and Jamaica's finest, depending on the flavor. Their ginger beer is to die for, I had no idea it was distributed so far out! Fantastic video idea, Tom. Definitely wanna visit here if I ever get the chance!
When I did a cross-country road trip through the US in the summer of 2014, I stopped in LA specifically to visit Galco's. It's a wonderful little store. It's partly because of guys like John Nese that I have taken an interest in sodas. Oh, and that cucumber soda (Mr. Q Cumber) is fantastic. I don't like cucumber, but I loved that soda.
1:47 Oh my god, Moxie, I absolutely love that stuff. Never had it before I moved to Maine but it's a local favorite up here, flavored with gentian root so it's got a weird semi-medicinal flavor but it's absolutely delicious.
1:31 Well now, that soda comes all the way from Kutztown, PA! Awesome to see a business in California selling a local favorite here in Berks County PA.
I saw a little video about Galco's a while ago and that was the first time i had ever heard of it. I truly wish there were more shops like this around the country, and i'm really happy to see them show up on this channel.
I would be so happy and proud to follow in this guy's footsteps. I love interesting flavors of sodas (and I like most of the weird ones...the exception being the celery ginger ale...not recommended). If I ever go to LA (and I live in the Central Valley), I'll have to visit this place.
Bravo on visiting Galco's. I heard about this store from another UA-cam channel and had to go when I visited LA last year. Local guys need more publicity!
