Hey Judy! I miss you and I hope all is well with you. Enlightening video! Starting a solo-practice would be so freeing, but there are definitely a lot of considerations to have. Thank you for the share
I have a friend who has been working for a large international law business for a number of decades and been contemplating starting his own practice. Even though he's from Australia, your advise and counsel transcends geography. I've shared this video and your channel to him, I'm sure he'll enjoy your content very much!
Great topic! I went solo right out of law school...location (densely populated location in the NYC area) and being able to speak a 2nd language was key to my success...
Wow, you are brave to have been able to do that straight out of law school. Definitely, in some locales it is a big plus to be able to speak another language. I have gotten some clients who spoke Mandarin Chinese; the majority of my clients are not Asian. What are your areas of practice? Thanks for watching!
Is there anything that could make you walk away from solo practice. Like a GS 15 federal job that's 9-5. Or a partnership at a mid size firm, or getting a sugar daddy like you referred to earlier. Lol
Not at all! Now that my solo practice is successful, there's no way I'd want to be boxed into a certain schedule, not being able to have the flexibility and ability to pick and choose my cases, or deal with office politics in order to have a steady paycheck. The freedom is priceless. :)
I know an attorney who graduated law school, started his own practice, and did it for 30 years before he retired and became a judge. But in his day school was more affordable as was living expenses.
Definitely. Things were very different 30+ years ago without the huge glut of lawyers, law schools everywhere, and $70k/year tuition at private schools. Even UNC law is about $25k/year now for in-staters.
I didn't want to be a inexperienced solo novice, so I offered to work for an experienced attorney for minimum wage or FREE! He asked why I'd work for free - I told him I needed the experience, like a graduate of Medical School needs the years of residency to know what they're doing. He hired me, fortunately for more than minimum wage, and within a couple of years I was making a "Lawyer" salary. Did my first depositions with him, wrote my first briefs with him (Opposition to Demurrer, Opposition to MSJ, etc), court appearances. Great experience, good way to start.
Glad it worked out and you eventually got paid better. It is still disturbing that some people are expected to work for free, or peanuts, even with a bar license. Most law grads can't even afford to do that.
It's true-- I've seen at least 2 people with J.D.s doing luxury unboxing videos on UA-cam. That you won't see me doing, unless it's knock-off "Shanelle." Thanks for tuning in!
lool yes you definitely have to be a type A thing to pursue things on your own!!! You have to be able to multitask, do your own things, etc and being self employed is not as glorious as everyone thinks. I feel like being this entrepreneur is romanticized nowadays and people tend to forget that it actually takes a lot of work!!
If you are doing billable hours, you are just slaving away to make someone else very wealthy. That's the truth. Some people don't mind that. But if you do, make a move.
Exactly. When I started my practice, another solo offered to pay me 1/3 of my billables, and I would also still have to pay my own office rent & expenses and put his firm name on my door & stationery. I turned down that offer. Another attorney extended a similar deal, then never got back with me, and that was a blessing in disguise.
I was a Partner at a mid-sized firm. Being a Partner at a firm when you have no book of business is not a good idea. If you have no business you are a glorified associate. You are a PINO - partner in name only.
This is definitely a fun live stream! Finally get to watch it :)
Thanks for tuning in, Tom!

Thank you!

Hi Sam, Self employment offers NO Fear to lose job. And besides one can pass the practice to upcoming generations which is not possible in jobs.

Get help with taxes! Take your local CPAs and financial advisors out for coffee. Good relationships with local professionals pay off.
Good advice!
