I currently use a rode video mic pro on a mic stand that's overhead. My studio would have echo, but its carpeted. So when I point the camera down overhead, it sounds nice and crisp with almost no echo.
Amazing the difference with just a $20 mic! And the zoom looks cool for on the go! I'm currently using an older Rode Video Mic (need to upgrade) & Sennheiser lavaliers - but am still figuring out how to dial in audio to have it sounding👌
Personally I don't recommend using a lavalier mic with a long cord hooked up to your camera. Soon or later you are going to forget about the mic and you are going to get up and walk away. Boom! It pulls over your camera setup and destroys some amount of your equipment, possibly costing you time and hundreds of dollars. It is an expensive accident waiting to happen. If you do use this setup, loop the cable through something heavy that will stop you from pulling on the camera directly.
I use the Comica CV30 shotgun microphone. It's actually not that bad for the price. It's about $38 online and it performs just as well as a Rode VideoMicro. If you want to create quality videos you need good audio. My film teacher told that filmmaking is 49% Visuals and 51% Audio. Have fun creating videos guys. :D
although the 49%/51% split gets the point across, I would go even further and say that people will watch soft focus or low-quality video, but scrambled, clipping, and distorted audio will make people cringe and is simply unwatchable.
Hey Sean, I never comment on youtube videos, however this time I really want to say that you do a great job in explaining the gear for someone how doesn't know anything about microphones. This video probably saved me x amount of hours of researching the web and that is what I am looking for on youtube. Thanks 👍
Think Media, I've done it. Thanks for your encouraging emails and watching your videos and also purchasing your class via Facebook, I started my own channel. Though I've only uploaded two videos so far, I feel so proud of myself and the quality. I do expect to improve and it is quite challenging but it's made me aware that despite my anxiety and depression I can still do this. Thank you so so much. I'm now on a quest for a pocket price friendly microphone to compliment my current set up. I opted for soft box lights, I'm throwing an 18 inch ring light into the mix (that arrives tomorrow). Love your channel and the wonderful team involved ❣️❣️❣️❣️
Hey Shawn, a BIG thank you for making this video. looking to start uploading my very first video and this has been extremely helpful! Ordered the BOYA mic + Batteries and a small tripod. I'm very excited to join the UA-cam community!!!
Another commenter said overhead mic gets best sound and can go near mouth without showing in shot. So I was trying to think how to do that without needing to have a person there to hold a boom mic (like we did in college documentary filmmaking class years ago). Love this idea of a mic stand with boom arm instead (though it can't follow action around like a person holding a boom mic can)!!! Boom arm would be more stuff to carry and set up for outdoor standing/sitting videos such as talking head or interview (but maybe worth it!) and doesn't work for say walking selfie stick videos or a video of riding a bike. But sounds like it can get great audio and at least makes sense for indoor videos.
Thanks so much, Sean! I've started watching your videos back in 2017 and I actually bought the H1n and the BOYA BY-M1 because of your advise. The H1n is great for events (like autoshows I do) and also for narrations, which I do a lot for my videos. I also use it at work for daily standup meetings (as people complained laptop mike wasn't good enough to hear, and with this mike they don't complain anymore). And the BOYA BY-M1 is great for my in car videos.
Thank you for the affordable recommendations and show how audio sounded from each mic. That really helped me pick the best one for my recording needs. I just ordered the TAKSTAR SGC-598 Shotgun Microphone!
I bought the Takstar 598 to use with my iPhone 7 Plus. I was extremely frustrated because it DIDN'T work with the dongle. I bought several adapters (Y-Splitters) to no avail. I FINALLY got it working by using the Rode SC4 converter. The Takstar connects to the Rode, which connects to the dongle, which connects to the iPhone (thanks Apple). It works PERFECTLY this way and the audio is AMAZING for what you pay.
Good video Sean. Interesting re Cannon 70 d and shot gun. Took me almost a year to figure out why the audio was hissing. I boosted the shotgun mic, taking the pressure off the cannon internal audio and problem solved 👍
This was probably one of the most useful videos that I have seen in a long time, especially with me literally just starting to record. Thanks Bro, you gained a fan today.
This video is great! As a NEW youtuber my gopro audio is very poor. I started using a lavalier microphone I purchased on Amazon and now my audio quality has improved signifigantly! I am excited to upload my next video with my new lavalier mic. I used your tip and I have it plugged into my phone and use the gopro mic as a secondary audio source. Thank you!
if you shoot videos on your home and then upload them on youtube use a software like Audacity and Voicemeter (both are free) to increase the quality of the microphone with some filters and tweaks. Voicemeter also works for streaming. there are video tutorials on youtube for both. you can make a good cheap microphone sound like a microphone that costs over $100.
I have a TAKSTAR SGC-598 Shotgun Microphone mounted on my camera I purchased 3-4 years ago. It has worked great, sounds good and the battery lasts a long time. I have never turned it on and the battery was dead, and that has gave me a lot of confidence that it will work. TY
The Dual Lav is exactly what I'm looking for. THANK YOU for the info. I was about to search for it on Amazon but instead I am happily using your affiliate link to make my purchase. :) Your videos are really great, Sean.
I never thought i would join a group of another youtuber like me but here bbn i am joining your group. Ty for blessing me cause i really needed your group!
Hey, I just watched the video and I have to say, you really know how to explain stuff about mics to someone who knows nothing about it. Thx so much buddy.☺☺
We love the snow ball by blue we bought one from our local Walmart and works great for the group during the Live Interactive Comedy Podcast because it is omnidirecitional. We love it
I LOVE THINK MEDIA! I’m learning so much from you. I trust in you because you have not told me wrong. I will be taking your master class very soon. Thanks!!
Hey, Sean! (feel like I'm talkin to myself!) I recently found your channel because I was interested in the Rode Reporter Mic. I'm a VO guy that likes to do equipment reviews and event interviews for my youtube channel and podcast, so I've cobbled together a lot of A/V configurations over the years! Using my iphone or ipad camera, I've connected a number of audio interfaces of various prices via the camera connection kit (audient id4 and id22, spl creon, steinberg ur12, Yamaha AG03, Centrance Mixerface) using a shotgun or LDC mic (rode nt1, sennheiser mk4, lewitt lct 440, sennheiser 416), all with great results! But it looks like I'll be watching a lot more of your videos to help improve my VIDEO quality! Keep up the great work! "It's not the resources you have, it's your resourcefulness!" Love it!
I have literally just brought the neewer Mic with boom arm 48v phantom box 2 pop filters... for 30.99 English pounds... and I'm so so happy with it... I'll be doing a video on it for my channel
I got the Boya Lav mic a month ago based off your recommendations. it has totally changed the audio quality on my channel for the better. Great recommendation. I also have the TakStar shotgun mic for when I'm out in the field doing run and gun vlogging. Also a dope audio choice, without breaking the bank. Highly recommend for small channels that are starting out and building up.
I recently invested in the Boya-BY-M1 for recording videos with my iPhone. I have to say I was very impressed with the audio quality and build quality on the mic. I used it with my handheld rig and just used the Velcro wrap to neatly coil the excess cable so I wouldn’t ttrip on it while walking around. I have a mini shotgun mic on order and can’t wait to try it too. Thanks for the tips. Really enjoying your channel.
Love the videos man! Got the Boya Lav, Rode Mic cell phone version, and the Rode video mic all work amazing. Also got the T7I Canon which was a huge step from what I was using .
I really enjoy my Takstar especially for the price. It has made a big difference in the quality of my videos. I first saw the recommendation from you! One thing I like about it as well is I can add the bracket to the back so I can mount it and still be able to take photos out of the view finder. Also, doing some basic post-production work on Audacity can do wonders as well :-) it is a great free tool Keep up the helpful videos!
Wow any tips for audacity post production work? I am currently starting to use audacity to record audio on my computer but I did not know I could do work in post! I am also considering buying the takstar shotgun mic as well. Thanks!
Bahiano Reno What I mostly do is "normalize" the audio, run it through the compressor, and use noise reduction as needed. If you look up how to do those three things you can have audio that is adequately level, loud, and clear. The takstar does a great job on my Canon 80D!
I record trumpet tutorials and the difference in the signal between my voice and the trumpet was challenging. I’ve finally settled on using the Zoom H5 for both my voice and the trumpet since it receives multiple microphone inputs. I use a Sony lav for my voice and Shure Beta 57A for the trumpet. Both sound great and there is no longer peaking when I play 🎺!
VERY INFORMATIVE VIDEO. YOU CAN DEFINITELY HEAR THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE DIFFERENT MICROPHONES. WHAT I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW ABOUT IS THE WIRELESS MICROPHONES THAT CLIP TO YOUR SHIRT AND YOU HAVE THE LITTLE BOX THAT GO ON YOUR BELT IN THE BACK. IT'S NOT ALWAYS ABOUT PRICE, SOMETIMES FOR JUST A LITTLE MORE MONEY, YOU CAN GET A FAR BETTER PRODUCT. MAYBE YOUVE ALREADY COVERED THIS IN A PREVIOUS VIDEO BECAUSE I'M KINDA NEW.
I'm a big fan of the blue snowball Mic! A friend gave it two me and it has definitely been a great workhorse microphone for what I do on my channel. Thanks for all your great suggestions and content!
2 things, one the tonor bm 700 as a pose to the neewer nw 700, and 2 advice for the takstar works best if you manually lower the levels to about -7 db, and turn the +10 db gain on, your sound will be clear and you won't even have to edit it
Really enjoyed this vid! A lot of vids like this assume "budget" is anything below $200, so it's a relief to find a tutorial that's more in line with my kinda budget. :) Nice work!
I just picked up a BOYA BY-M1 Lavalier today for making videos in a studio. I previously bough a RØDE Videomic GO (a shotgun mic like the TAKSTAR for those unfamiliar with mics) and I have mixed feelings about it. Costing around $80, the sound quality is decent if sufficiently close to the mic, but since it doesn't use batteries, there's no boosting the dB levels. The biggest problem with the Videomic GO is that it isn't shielded at all, so if you have any, and I mean any, Wi-Fi or Blue Tooth, or even your phone's 4G on in the room, you're likely to get a clicking noise in your audio. That's enough for me to not recommend the RØDE Videomic GO, though I still use it. I'm planning to try making videos using the BOYA BY-M1 and see if it doesn't improve things.
Snowball sounds well but it sounds too "close" if you know. Lavs and shotguns are better for vlogs and movies. I see Blue only for voiceovers or tutorials and gaming
@Hey, Iké A lav would OK, but if moving around, the wire may be a pain. A wireless lav might be best, like this one I reviewed ua-cam.com/video/rt2Zy2p5BiI/v-deo.html
Insanely timely! I needed this! I have a Lavalier mic and have been petrified to use it (thought it looked weird nowadays) I'm gonna use it! I'm also going to check out some of the other options you mentioned. Oh my goodness. I think I can really start my channel! Eeeeeek!
For simple interviews or when just describing/talking while vidding, I use my Iphone earphones. It works as good as affordable lav mic. No need to dish out $20 or more. Try it.
I am using my smartphone inbuilt mic currently...was planning to buy a shot gun mic but it wont get connected to a phone and even if i got a DSLR camera the shot gun mic wont record from far as i sit 3 to 4 feet far from camera..so i guess BOYA would be a great choice for me....will need to sync the audio and video i guess....
Would love to see a complete UA-cam or Travelling setup that brings all your tips together, with perhaps the M50, action cam, one of these mics, sd cards, lenses, camera bag, tripod, filters, etc. If you go on a trip in the future, you can make a mini-series about using this setup in different situations (low light, nature, street, studio, etc.) and I think it would be a hit on the channel. That is just a suggestion though, I'm loving all these budget options, it shows us how a little money can go so far for a beginning creator!
I would have loved to hear how the Rode mic sounds, the one that comes in the video creator kit on Amazon with the Canon M50! Trying to decide if I should buy the kit or just the camera and a mic separate...
Thank you for the tip Sean! In my case, I also wanna share, I use iPod nano & boya lavalier mic to record audio. Then I just combine them in post. But before i had the Lavalier mic, I used an iPhone headset/mic combo connected to an iPod nano. Had a decent setup using resources that i currently have.
Thank you for the tips but you haven't covered what I'm looking for. I need a mic for my plane spotting videos (you can check what I'm doing on my channel) what kind of mic you recommend me? I'm talking about microphones with a price range between 20€ to 80€ (same price range in USD).
I have the takstar on a6400 but I've shot a couple videos where the audio leading into a take has a lot of feedback that goes away once I'm talking. How do I get more clean audio 3-6 ft away? boom on recording device or lav on phone? I know you said phone works well, but I'm nervous to rely on separate file for audio..
I record all of my on-camera audio using a Sony ECMCS3 Lav mic, it's got a short cord but that's fine since I record it to an Allreli digital voice recorder, which I got for about ~40 on Amazon a while back. The model is a CP0038 and has 8GB of storage -- way more than I'll ever need. It's super cheap, fits easily into a pocket, and sounds great! I shoot on a Canon T3i which has a very noisy preamp, which is why I need an external recorder. Syncing audio is easy in post, but I do end up having to adjust the playback speed to 100.05%, because otherwise it loses sync over time. Not really sure what's up with that...
I bought the BOYA, it was far to hot. If I spoke with energy and authority (i.e. anything but a whisper) it would clip. Sounded terrible. BUT! my cannon camera has a gain control. I turned the gain way the heck down and it worked great.
Wow this is incredible!!!! I'm so happy I found it so I can invest on a budget-friendly mic for now that's still great and then in the future get more professional ones
I've been using the Zoom H1n recorder because of the multi use functions it offers. I use it as a mounted microphone with the line out going to my microphone port on my m50 or use it as a handheld microphone like how you showed in some videos.
I've been using my phone as a microphone with the WO Mic app but I finally got enough money to buy one. I'd like to get the Snowball Ice Mic but because of the placement of my computer, I'm gonna go for the Neewer Mic. Cheaper and it has that arm that would be useful for me.
This is cool! Just did an experiment with a lav plugged into my phone to sync with video earlier this weekend. Need to combine in post and see how it helps. ✌
i want to start a youtube channel in which ill be able to share my video games gameplay (yes i know its cliche but whatever) and i have everything set except a good microphone. i was thinking about buying a blue yeti, but i find it a little bit too expensive as a "first good microphone". this video helped me a lot, and made me think about what kind of microphone i want to have. thanks a ton :)
Personally I use a Neewer NW800 and a Behringer U PHORIA UM2 interface for gaming videos and just sync the audio for vlogs that I do in my room, very nice considering the vid I did today I had a fan behind me and you cannot hear it. I need to get a TRRS cable so I can just use a lapel mic that I have with my small point and shoot, however I could just use my GOPRO White with the lapel mic.
Shotgun definitely sounds better. 👍🏽. Haven’t got a mic yet for my personal finance videos. But been looking into BOYA MM1 for my iPhone 8 Plus. I just don’t know if my gimbal Smooth Q will fit all that, or if I need an adapter of some sort.

I’m using a Comica Mic. I used to have a #RodeVideoMicro but I gave it to my friend who’s also a UA-camr.
Great to hear the actual audio difference between the devices. Thanks 👍🤓

You can always use a mic stand with boom arm and hook the tasktar mic + your audio recorder 👋👍🙌just make sure you sand bag the stand

Yeah you secure them to the boom arm with super clamps and 1/4 double head screws

I just ordered the Canon M50 kit with shotgun Mic and all the extras!!! I can't wait to get it and start using my new setup!
A wireless lav might be best, like this one I reviewed

Insanely timely! I needed this! I have a Lavalier mic and have been petrified to use it (thought it looked weird nowadays) I'm gonna use it! I'm also going to check out some of the other options you mentioned. Oh my goodness. I think I can really start my channel! Eeeeeek!
Yes! Happy to help -- keep crushing it! 😀👊💯
For simple interviews or when just describing/talking while vidding, I
use my Iphone earphones. It works as good as affordable lav mic. No
need to dish out $20 or more. Try it.
Thanks for the great information. Helpful as always!!
2 mins into the video - I ordered the Boya mic - it cost me £12.99 on ebay. Happy days! Thank you!
We got ourselves a little Rode. Seems to work good!!
Subs to my channel I make vlogs ❤️
Hey, Iké - yes it comes with a wind protector so it should filter a lot of that unwanted noise out while you’re moving around
nice tips... I was searching for a mic like that and there is tons of the on amazon... Great to see whats best in your opinion
👊⚡ 💯
PLOTURE Microphone is a solid budget mic, also include in your review
Great vid with nice tips. I looking at getting either the Zoom H1N or the Tascam DR-05 for on the go filming. I have the Blue Snowball for voiceovers.
I'm revamping my vlogging setup. This is so useful! thank you!
Thank you for the tips but you haven't covered what I'm looking for. I need a mic for my plane spotting videos (you can check what I'm doing on my channel) what kind of mic you recommend me? I'm talking about microphones with a price range between 20€ to 80€ (same price range in USD).
As a new channel, I have been using my phones mic but will now buy the Boya B1M1.
Great video Sean
I have the takstar on a6400 but I've shot a couple videos where the audio leading into a take has a lot of feedback that goes away once I'm talking. How do I get more clean audio 3-6 ft away? boom on recording device or lav on phone? I know you said phone works well, but I'm nervous to rely on separate file for audio..
We can see how much hardwork you put in your videos, you are gonna go sooo far InshaAllah
I am using boya by m 1 from last 6 months and it is the best mic fo me
I record all of my on-camera audio using a Sony ECMCS3 Lav mic, it's got a short cord but that's fine since I record it to an Allreli digital voice recorder, which I got for about ~40 on Amazon a while back.
YOU ARE A LIFE SAVER.I JUST STARTED MY UA-cam CHANNEL AND EVERY-TIME I SEARCH UP ADVICE/TIPS I SEE YOUR FACE.
Wow this is incredible!!!! I'm so happy I found it so I can invest on a budget-friendly mic for now that's still great and then in the future get more professional ones
Your videos are so helpful!
Great video! You’re extremely for informative and helpful.
I'd love to see a review of the CAD u37, a budget USB microphone.
huge difference! I thought they may be more expensive I think im getting the lapel version for free movement when im creating.
Thanks for the new video Sean. I really want a mic to improve video quality thanks once again you helped me grow so much.
I love this channel it helps me out a lot
I've been using the Zoom H1n recorder because of the multi use functions it offers. I use it as a mounted microphone with the line out going to my microphone port on my m50 or use it as a handheld microphone like how you showed in some videos.
I've been using my phone as a microphone with the WO Mic app but I finally got enough money to buy one. I'd like to get the Snowball Ice Mic but because of the placement of my computer, I'm gonna go for the Neewer Mic. Cheaper and it has that arm that would be useful for me.
I'm currently using the smartphone VideoMic Me from Rode. 🎙👌🏼 Very informative video. Thank you!
Great mic! They just made one that is for lighting ports directly
Think Media thanks! Thats good to know for when I upgrade!
Your videos and tips are always helpful. Thanks!
This video was super duper helpful!! Thank you so much!
you know!? you are amazing, and you make amazingly amazing videos and they are amazing, with amazing video quality and audio.
Great job on assembling and providing examples of the various Mic's!
This is cool! Just did an experiment with a lav plugged into my phone to sync with video earlier this weekend. Need to combine in post and see how it helps. ✌
Hi I'm just starting out with UA-cam and I've been watching your videos for advice. Thank You
Currently own the boya Lavalier, and tascam dr-05 works great, have a Sony a6000, audio 🔉 comes from recorder 💪💪🙌🙌
nice setup!
thank you, hope after putting in all the effort it'll be worth it. Going to get the boya one. Good luck to those starting youtube channels out there
Thanks man! Definitely going to pick up that TakStar as a second mic. Didn't want to pick up another Rode.
i want to start a youtube channel in which ill be able to share my video games gameplay (yes i know its cliche but whatever) and i have everything set except a good microphone. i was thinking about buying a blue yeti, but i find it a little bit too expensive as a "first good microphone". this video helped me a lot, and made me think about what kind of microphone i want to have. thanks a ton :)
Great setup and workflow 👊💯
You influenced me to start youtube! Keep up the good work 👍👍 👍
Shotgun definitely sounds better. 👍🏽. Haven’t got a mic yet for my personal finance videos. But been looking into BOYA MM1 for my iPhone 8 Plus. I just don’t know if my gimbal Smooth Q will fit all that, or if I need an adapter of some sort.
