    I asked my mom for some of her old magazines. We spent the next hour digging through images together. What a treat to start my harvesting adventures! Thanks, Helen!❤

      @@journalingplanet My mom was involuntarily “retired” from her job at 80 yrs old, so it made her feel useful to dig through her magazines for me. By the end she was telling me what I could use certain images for. 😆 It was a very special time.

    Our local library has a bin for donating magazines; it’s a great resource as they are free!

    I absolutely love harvesting magazines. I never buy them new, they are way out of my reach, financially. Keeping an eye on local FB groups has netted me many free ones. I prefer matte, but will take anything, particularly if it is a unique subject. Breathe is one of my favourites to try and find, but they're not so common here in NZ. I did a video on using magazine pages to make faux washi for my Trash Craft Tuesday this week. I haven't stopped making it since. 😁

      @journalingplanet  Рік тому +1

      Oooh! I need to look up that faux washi video! Magazines are the treat I occasionally indulge in because we struggle to go anywhere with my husband's health and thus spend less money on everything else but it is very rare that I buy a brand new one. It has to have amazing craft potential or I have to really need the pick me up. I agree that you're much better getting them second hand. ❤️

    When I teach a basic junk journaling class, I tell student’s to look not only for images but also color, texture, and words. In the first magazine you flipped through I was drawn to the blue brick/ tile on one page. Little pieces of texture and color go great in collages both master board size and journal tag size. Cut into strips they can be used like Washi tape. Here in the USA older cross stitch and crafting magazines are not only matte finish but have wonderful pages in the back of advertising like tiny business cards which make wonderful and unique labels. In newer magazines logos and brands also make great labels. Thank you for sharing how you would harvest these magazines.💜🐞

    Whenever I see a magazine at the store I want to buy, I think I can get the info from the computer and save spending anywhere up to $25. If I really want to read an article, I see if Libby has it (the library's free service which I'm sure your library has, too - or the European equivalent). Old magazines are 25 cents at the thrift store. Free mags can be found at library sales, Little Free Libraries, Senior Centers, and friends/relatives. I leave all my handmade journals at Little Free Libraries and the Senior Center so I'm always looking for free things.

    I love using magazines too. History magazines are great. I did an Elizabethan man and woman, with the words “ you better shape up, cos I need a man, and my heart is set on you” (Grease). I had great fun with contorted medieval figures and funny quotes. Bayeux tapestry is a great source.

    Hey girl, new sub here: fab to see a fellow UK based crafty youtuber!! 🥰 I don't buy magazines much to cut up now (I do buy Antique Homes though as fab stuff in there!) I prefer to use the Olio app as I've managed to get so many for free on there!! And i'm talking good stuff: 90's Marie Claire's, vintage National Geographics, 1960's magazines and all for free! Would defo recommend downloading if you haven't already and see if anyone uses it in your area 🥰

    If you went over the glossy images with a clear gesso would that work to turn it to matt finish, or would it be too wet and wrinkle it too much?

    • @journalingplanet
      @journalingplanet  Рік тому +1

      It's a good question Janine. I haven't tried clear gesso but I would say it's certainly worth a go. Maybe mounting the image on the tag / journaling card first would make it more sturdy and stop it wrinkling? If indeed that is a problem - it might be fine!

    Hello, im from Argentina. Please someone can help me with a doubt: Can I sell a junk journal made with pieces of magazines?....... i have many ideas to collage and i wish included in my journals to sell. But i dont want break any rule. Thank you

      Hi there, thank you for the comment! So, unfortunately I can't offer legal advice. What I can tell you is I've seen quite a few people in the community say that it is fine to use magazine images for a junk journal you want to sell if you are creating a one-of-a-kind item. Issues seem to arise when people scan their collages and try to sell many copies of it. This isn't legal advice but community wisdom suggests that it's fine if you are only making one. I hope this helps you. It's a complex issue. ❤️❤️❤️

      @@journalingplanet thank you very much for answering. The suggestion is useful to me. If it is not something that is sold massively, if it is an article created by transforming the original design, it would be respected. Use a piece of color, some images of natural, details to create something New and Just one item. A big hug and continue loving art 😍😍😍
