I'm a professional coach in another sport, and I have to say you are a fantastic teacher. Your speech is concise, you tell the "why" behind everything, and it's obvious you are passionate about your sport and helping getting people better. Fantastic.
I have been discovering, on my one year long surfing journey surfing regularly as often as the ocean allows, that all these maneuvers develop naturally on that same order. Naturally my surfing development "asks" to develop those horizontal maneuvers before even thinking on going vertical. And it so rewarding to "hit the targets" on each session and the progress piles up.
I was literally just thinking today how I never try anything because I don't want to fall off the wave and you addressed that issue immediately. Ill never get over the joy of just riding a wave so I never want to ruin it but I know there is more fun to be had if I just push myself.
Love your content, just the facts and nothing more. Your explanations/tutorials are always on point for your target audience with great visuals. You’re ahead of the pack in the realm of surf lessons and coaching. And it’s always nice to see other industry units and how they deliver. If you’re ever in Barbados swing by our shop at freights and have a coffee.
Thanks Ru, You explain everything so well that we can all understand. Having some notes on the board is so helpful. Look to the lip, Targets and back foot back are the only notes that I’ll keep going forward. I’m so glad that you have continued with the surf tutorials. I don’t know why but I perform well on big clean waves 6ft but don’t do nearly as well on 2-3ft waves. Perhaps having more time on bigger waves allows my 🧠 to remember. Any advise would be much appreciated.(I don’t think that a brain transfer is on the cards yet). Thanks, Steve
This channel, specially the last videos about the physics in surf have been so useful and provided some technical information about fluid mechanics, in general the physics in surf. It’s so useful and I think that it’s really going to help everyone improve when we return to the beach. Thank you!!!
I've just discovered your channels and watched the series surfing explained. Amazing content! And these tips are presented in a way I've never heard before. Thanks so much and keep the good stuff coming!
This is just great, so helpful to so many people out there. literally all of the content you guys have been pumping out lately has just been fenomenal! (Special shout to the surfboard physics vids) Really thankful and always looking forward to more. Hopefully after this pandemic is behind us I can head there for a surf camp and get some insights from you lot. Awesome work!
Very nice. Keep them coming. When there will be a saturday class or quick tip about the funcional stance? I'm having problems with my back knee and ankle.
That's exactly my issue, if I get a nice decent ride that I'm ahead of, I get worried if I try n do any hectic manuover. But I also tend to do a cutback at the end but, after you saying that makes me feel better I'm not the only one lol and especially if it's well overhead, I my brain goes overdrive n I kinda freeze up n just go down the line n don't look good :(
I was just thinking yesterday during my surf wow I wish I could learn when to and how to pick the right maneuver to do based on the waves have in front of me this is so helpful thank you!
Really enjoying these clips especially during lockdown...this one in particular is absolute gold! Can't wait to get back in the water again soon.. Thanks so much for taking the time and prep and film these Quick tip clips.. Quick question: so during lockdown I've got back into skating (as in street skateboarding not longboarding).. Do you feel that skating is a good thing to practice and work at if your main goal / aim is just to improve at surfing / be a better surfer? Any there any pros or cons from skating a lot from your experience? You may have discussed this in depth before on the podcast but I'd be interested to hear your thoughts on this. Cheers!
Hi Alisdair, I absolutely believe skating helps, assuming you’re following the same principles like compressing in the knees and using your upper body to rotate through turns, then there is no doubt it’ll help! Good luck!
Any tips for “hitting targets” on going backside? I think most of these clips feature a surfer facing the wave, as a goofy footer in a town with exclusively right-hand point breaks, i pretty much have to make it work with only rights lol!
We have a drill we call 'Touch & Throw', where you touch the water using the inside hand (wave side) to aid in compressing into the inside rail, and then as you lift up the wave face to reach the top you throw the same hand round towards the beach to encourage rotation. Heel side is always the more difficult. Focus on being nice and compressed for stability and a chance of applying more weight into the inside rail, and then focus on upper body rotation. You should be almost at a full twist facing the wave through the bottom turn and then facing the beach through the top turn. You can get a lot of data by slowing down a video clip of someone doing a back hand maneuver and watch out for these two things: compression and upper body rotation. Good luck!!
I am still on a foamie but practicing going down the line and I often find myself way ahead of where the foam/peak is. However I don't think I am at the level where I should be trying cutbacks yet, also the big foamie is really hard to turn so tight. Is there another way to make the whitewater catch up with me again? Like stalling the board or something?
Hi Maarten, yes a stall would do the trick, and on a bigger volumed foam board it will take a good portion of weight transferred into the back foot to get the desired effect so be determined to slow it down! Equally recognising when a cutback is necessary is half the game so it sounds like you might just be ready, try it and let us know how it goes! Just stay low for extra balance, and always look where you WANT to go (like back to the whitewater) rather than where you are already going.
I've tried practicing this. Sometimes in on-shore, closeout type surf, the wave clips me at the ankles or knees. What am I doing wrong when I get clipped instead of "hitting the target"? Btw, the best part of the Steph Gilmore video is where she pushes somebody off the wave.
I enjoyed that bit out of the film too, I’m sure that guy couldn’t wait to tell his friends that a 7xWorld Champ pushed him off haha. When you reach the target, already have your head and body looking at where you expect it to push you, often that is the difference between going with it and not.
Can you discuss targets on bigger waves? In anything bigger than about chest high, hitting floaters or rebounding off white water on a cutback just don't seem right. Watching pros, they have a higher threshold, but will similarly shy away from these techniques in bigger surf. What becomes the new objective in bigger surf? For example, here's Dane Gudauskas straight shredding a slightly overhead wave. He's not getting a rebound on any of these, so what's he thinking/trying to do? ?instagram.com/p/CFavAFZJ2SX/?igshid=pxt81at05ott
I’ve started surfing in 2012.
Over the past 8 years Ru still gives the best surfing tips on the web. It’s crazy how next level your content is.
Absolutely agree! Crystal clear explanations that make all the sense.
They stand appart from the rest at teaching surf!
Thanks Tim and Pablo, we’re glad you’re enjoying them. We have a handful more of these videos to come too!
Agreed :)

Thanks Damcha022! Glad you’re enjoying the content. We’re doing a live coaching Q&A today from 12pm CST if you have any questions for us to answer.
I used to watch your older videos over and over because they‘re all very helpful as you explain this stuff in such a great way. Thank you very much!
Really useful stuff, and gotta love a coach with “maelstrom” in his vocabulary. Surf-Nerd indeed !

Tuanis Ru, love the context of using an onshore day for target practice...

Which surfing books you got there in the background? Keen to find some for the summer :)
Il take a photo of our library when I go to the resort in a couple of days!
I see Barbarian Days by Bill Finnegan, a superb book.
