Surf Your Best Ep. #2: How to Perfect Your Takeoff

THE LESSON: Don’t second-guess it. Choose your takeoff angle early and stick to it with all your momentum - either that or leave the wave alone. This goes double and triple as the wave grows heavier, thicker and quicker; any hesitation will leave you exposed to the wave’s energy rather than aligning with it. You might be able to modify your line later…but only if you’ve charged your choice.

One easy way to look at it is that once you've got the board up on a rail, the outline of the surfboard becomes the rocker and you're less likely to pearl on the takeoff.
