Fujiwara no Mokou, one of the most polarizing characters between canon and fanon. On one hand, she's a friendly loner who has beef with Kaguya, and on the other hand, she's an antisocial pessimistic smoke addict that... really likes Kaguya.
Yeah no Gensokyo ain't surviving a Fanon Mokou outbreak, for as long as Kaguya exists (forever).
First sprite animation of 2023, this was a fun one to make. There is less animation and more "cinematics" in this, but regardless I wanted to have more practice with effects and such. After all, it's all about the journey, not the destination ;)

Mokou in canon is essentially a hobo with too much free time. Like, she let people assassinate her for a test of courage and let herself be possessed by Mamizou just to try it out.
As someone with too much free time I can tell you... at some point you're just plain bored.
You see a group of mobsters kick in your door and open fire with Tommy guns, you just perk up and go “Finally, some excitement!“
She is the embodiement of "that one unemployed friend at 3PM on a Wednesday"

The Touhou fandom basically made me realize that there's a difference between "alternative character interpretation" and straight-up character assassination. Unsurprisingly, it's the DEFINITION for the latter.
The fanon that annoys me the most is that EVERYONE is gay, and some people take it SUPER seriously and they'll get mad at you if disagree. I legit had someone unironically tell me "who are they supposed to be straight for? There are no men in Touhou."
Like, broo???? Half the cast is or looks about 10 years old??? Why are you so interested in the romantic (and most definitely sexual) relationships of little girls playing pretend??? That's super creepy, man...
I've always wondered how the touhou fandom sees a character and completely 180's their personality.

It's Flanderization. You have to understand that characters get introduced and then for years there is no official appearance again.
Mokou didn't appear from 8 to 15.5.
In that time her only characterization is what she says and does on her one appearance.
And people take those few character points and put them center stage.
Then fans of those fans take that interpretation and take it even further.
It's mythologization, basically. Is that even a word? It is now.

@@IEatHats It can also happen that people simply write doujin about a character with their own interpretations (which diverge from canon) that then stick for several reasons. One being that fans that perpetuate and share those new fanworks don't play the games first (as would be the case for me).
Sometimes characters just... grow into something completely different by accident.

Another Funny thing about Mokou is that she's one of few characters (maybe the only character) in Memories of phantasm where she's actually based on her canon side comparing to the rest of the cast who's obviously based on their fanon side.
I guess its because of just how blatantly far mokou is from fanon other than liking a fight.

Fittingly, a lot of Pre-Lolk Lunarians also have some very wildly different fanon versions.
Kaguya gets interpreted as either a shut-in (based on the lore that she had to stay inside to survive, which until this last couple of years people could only see as something done by choice) or a terrible person (by taking Mokou's early description of her at face value).
Yorihime and Toyohime get treated as being racist (because we had heard that Lunarians are like that and nobody realized the irony of profiling the first citizens they saw).
And Eirin... gets the shaft.
Really? From what i've seen Eirin is always protrayed as extremely powerful and either the only sane woman (when around Kaguya) or a psychopath (when around Reisen)
The Kaguya thing is spot on though, it's weird to find a Doujin where she isn't a garbage person, especially when Mokou is on the scene (who is portrayed as a complete saint who only reacts to Kaguya's BS)

As for Kaguya...if memory serves Kaguya is just a way less hongry and way more eccentric version of Yuyuko: Airheaded Powerhouse with a tendency to get bored.

Sure, she still has a bit of resentment towards her, but Kaguya is the only other person she knows that shares her curse of immortality. After all, it's quite hard for an immortal to make bonds with mortals when the immortal knows those bonds aren't gonna last forever, and it'll take up a mere speck of their lifespan. As a result, Mokou still genuinely cares about Kaguya because she's the only other person who knows Mokou's pain, and if Kaguya's gone, Mokou won't have anyone left who can sympathize with how much of a burden being immortal is.

Mokou protect Kaguya from Mizuchi but failed, got possessed by Mizuchi in FDS.
Fanon: Bad ass immortal that will pick a fight with anyone and is very suicidal and loves Kaguya.
Canon: Very chill homeless person and is only disrespectful to Kaguya and sometimes to the people of Eientei and wants to kill her.
Crazy how if you think about it, other than Kaguya she dosn't pick fights with anyone, everyone pulls up on her. She just chilling then suddenly someone wants smoke.

Fanon Mokou tends to vary from what I've seen. But the major thing all variations of Fanon Mokou share is their hatred for Kaguya and the desire to kill her in some capacity.
That said, nowadays it seems Mokou and Kaguya are friendly rivals (or possibly even just friends) instead of sworn enemies given that in Violet Detector/Foul Detective Satori, Mokou says she knows Kaguya sneaks out of Eientei to go to the Human Village and even shows her around the place while confronting the culprit behind everything.
As for ideas for other Fanon VS. Canon, how about Flandre (which can give folks *a lot* of mental whiplash for not keeping up with Touhou), Utsuho, Sakuya and Remilia.
Canon Flandre isn't too far from Fanon. If we're talking about the fanon interpretation of her wanting to destroy everything for fun. (th17.5)

Kaguya is basically Mokou's oldest acquaintance and the only one who will be around as long as Mokou.

Anyway, I personally don’t think of it as canon because shipping an eternal child (well, she isn’t Tenshi, more like a REALLY young looking adult) with an eternal adult feels weird.
Anyway, I thought that young adult (or basically a day off that) Mokou was canon because of the whole “HONOOOOOOUUUUUUR” thing.
Nope, her official art is that of a child.
(4 heads tall, compared to Reimu being 5 heads tall, using AoCF art. Reimu’s roughly as old as Marisa, who was in her mid teens during the PC 98 era (while not referenced much, it is officially canon to the windows era) so she’s somewhere between that and late 20s now.
By the way, heads in anime is usually used to convey physical age, but shorter characters are given bigger heads sometimes)
And AoCF’s art style is consistent, so… Mokou’s physically roughly the same age as Tenshi was when she ascended.

I think both of them could. Kaguya never planned to have Mokou around and got along just fine without her. And besides she has Eirin. Mokou on the other hand spent a long time immortal thinking that Kaguya went back to the moon before having found her. While she didn’t do quite as well, she did try to find ways to cope. Mostly by rejecting all interaction and killing anyone she ran into.

Funny thing is, they don't seem to outright hate each other anymore, at most keeping up the front of a blood feud because bored immortals need some bullshit to do.
Like, in one of the new manga (Cheating Detective Satori i think?) Mokou is literally accompanying Kaguya in the village when the latter sneaks out.

Could you do Fanon Eiki vs. Canon Eiki sometime?
Canon Eiki is one of the characters I have the most respect for in the series, seeing as she's very just and fair, having a mature and responsible personality, no more no less than what's expected of the Yama. All of those powerful characters such as Yukari, Reimu, Kanako, Remilia... they will all meet Eiki in the end, and will be judged accordingly on whether or not they will go to heaven or hell. Eiki will actually explain in details to those who she judges on what their mistakes and sins were and how to lead a better life, giving them advice on how to not end up in hell. She's one of the few characters who, regardless of what perspective you see her from, there's nothing to dislike her for. The role she takes, how she acts... Definitely one of my favorite characters in the cast. And in contrast to the "version" I'm about to describe next, she's pretty tall, significantly taller than Reimu, per se.
...As for the fanon version, Eiki is an angry loli who keeps yelling "LAW! CONVICT! YOU HAVE BIGGER BOOBS THAN ME, YOU GO TO HELL! LECTURE LECTURE LECTURE" *angry loli noises
I feel like that portrait of her she's known by completely disrespects and shows no regard for her character. I understand that, for comical effect, the fanon versions of characters over exaggerate their main traits, but in Eiki's case, it just ruins her reputation, since her fanon is how she's mostly known to be and has nothing to do with her actual self.
some other videos you could do of characters whose fanon versions have nothing to do with their canons are Reimu, Ran, Flandre...

I like Mokou. But the scene where she went into a 1-minute rant about how Kaguya's life is as valuable as a summer ant and that she should kill herself NOW was a bit too heavy. I guess I underestimated how dark ZUN could make the dialogue of a Touhou game.
