Billie Buckwheat Thomas as an adult was invited to a Laurel and Hardy Sons of the Desert convention. He walked out on stage and received a standing ovation which brought him to tears.
@@mikolavision 1936. Hal Roach tried to put the Rascals into features like Laurel and Hardy. This film wasn't successful and they stayed in shorts for 2 more years. Comedian Charley Chase was also unsuccessful and was fired and went to Columbia to star and also directed the best of the Three Stooges shorts.
It was Louise Beaver. She had to wear extra padding and forced to eat extra portions to gain weight for the "Mammy" figure. In the later years it probably contributed to obesity and diabetes which lead to her demise from a heart attack.
I just watch an Our Gang short from the mid 1920's (A Pleasant Journey) and they did the same bit with the paint on the shoes to get shoe shine business. Hal Roach recycled a lot of skits! I'd like to see this someday, although not many on IMdb are fans.
Do any of you Little Rascals fans know if Spanky often said, "it's otay Buckwheat," which is guess is the little black boy? I have only seen a few of the episodes, current for them, with Alfalfa and Darla in them as well. It's hard for me to watch the show as I know how children were treated in the business at that time, even worse than now.
@@4sureangel863 This is absolutely untrue. Billie "Buckwheat" Thomas said all his life that he absolutely loved his time on Our Gang and never experienced racism on set. Hal Roach simply would not tolerate that. And don't come at me with the pay issue either. It's an established fact that Farina, Stymie and Buckwheat were the highest or among the highest paid cast members once they passed toddlerhood.
Spanky just jumped in the water, Buckwheat was smart enough to get the.......what the Hell do you call that thing anyway that he jumped in the water with? Floating device?
The white lady didn't compliment the Black lady in return, and the White guy didn't even greet the Black lady with a hello. Thankfully, times have changed.
There were a lot worse things happening. There is a ton of predjudice and always will be from all directions. Not having social courtesy is the very least of it in my opinion.
Buckwheat say, “Otha!” Remember When we were children we watched these shows on tubed black and white TVs they looked pretty good too. I can say we because like me y’all is all old too if you are watching this and not getting all woke and racist about it. Funny we didn’t see anything wrong, just kids like us. Enjoy before UA-cam takes it down for bing all racist and stuff!
Don't stereotypes come from some sort of common ideas though? We're seeing it from a different lense but it wasn't necessary that offensive at the time. Im not sure what's even wrong with it if you don't have the modern connotations and perspectives. Black people were among the many discriminated against subsets of society.
You can't judge this art by today standards, it was a product made from an era of its time, it's in the past we leave it in the past and we move on to better things for today's culture and a better future for all forms of diversity ....
this wS filmed in the 1930s when segregation was in full swing. It showed black kids in school with white kids and playing with white kids in an INTEGRATED setting and was one of the first, if not the first, films to feature black actors. Pretty far ahead of its time I would say.
Is the show racist? Look at the way the black lady is treated in the finals scene and it’s obviously racist. However that doesn’t change the fact that this show was once despised by racists because it showed white and black characters as friends. Even if it was racist, it took longer than 30 years for that to ever happen agian. Andy Griffith… mash…
Oh yes it was, my friend. In fact, the most contemporarily entertainable and accepted racism at the time. You might mean when "political correctness" and an honest societal dialog wasn't a challenge. Either way a moot point.
If a black kid was playing Spanky's role that would be considered racist and if the maid was a white lady it would not be any different, it's common sense really not racism my dearest friend.

I love the Little Rascals, the whole gang. This is a very touching little film.
The way Buckwheat's always grinning like that reminds me of the Joker.
I was a huge fan back in the day…. If I see them on tv, I will still watch til this day !!!!! 😘
Brilliant Scam with the shoes tho!!😁🤣
😆😂😂😂 yep
Loved this show growing up. So funny. Look at that smile on Buckwheat. Great childhood memories watching this.
I think that black woman was louies beavers. She played in the first movie called imitation of life in1934 and the TV show Beulah
It was Louise Beaver. She had to wear extra padding and forced to eat extra portions to gain weight for the "Mammy" figure. In the later years it probably contributed to obesity and diabetes which lead to her demise from a heart attack.
Spanky was the most famous of the gang at this time. One of his best solo films was Kentucky Kernels
hahaha! hilarious! I love the hand coming out of the window with the brush
That fall into the water hurt
Just watched the entire movie on TCM. Precious.
just saw it early this morning....... ~good film!!!!!!!!

WoW… I’ve NEVER seen this one!
Before Ed Edd and Eddy and Craig of the Creek, there was Our Gang.
Spanky sure was a polite little rolely poley.
I hated when they forced him to do black face
OUR CHILDREN!!!!!!!!!!!! WE STARTING THIS MORNING WITH CEREAL AND FRUIT OK. 🥰🌞🌝
yeessssssssss
Spanky just jumps right in there! Haha!
I hope he can swim! Lol
WoW
I never really remembered this 🤷🏾
Go baby g go baby g. Go!
I think General Spanky was a movie. I never saw it too. I probably seen all The Little Rascals/ Our Gang.

No, it wasn't the little black boy. Porky, when commanded by Spanky to do something, would reply "Otay, Banky."
Yes, buckwheat is the little black boy and they were treated horibly back then and some still aren’t treated how they should be
@@barrys4922 otay spanty--tum on Porty
It was Porky (and Buckwheat) who said "O-Tay" not Spanky

Someone should upload the whole movie.
1:08 oh I hop spanky can swim lol!
Good ole days
The way the white woman and the black woman interact with one another was is so wholesome.
A lot of white people were raised by sweet black women.
General Spanky
My good friend Joe Clark use to call me spanky in middle school..
Otay Pankey. Beautiful entertainment.
Spanky just jumped in the water, Buckwheat was smart enough to get the.......what the Hell do you call that thing anyway that he jumped in the water with? Floating device?
Um, "life preserver?"
However it seems that Buckwheat was pulled into the water.
WHAT'S VUDO ON YOUR SHOE
Can this just be a normal movie instead of being hated and canceled
They really jumped in the water huh?
I have never seen this one.

Interestingly, Buckwheat is Spanky's co-star here, not Alfalfa. Alf wouldn't show up until late in the second or early third act!!!

Bull. That's aura quartz, a man-made coating... You don't just dig that shit up. Good lord...
Good Lord I hope they didn't do their own stunts!!!!
What did I do wrong.
oh that's right Ger. s. caint swim.

The racial stereotypes of that era are appalling, but Spanky and the kids are fun to watch. I'd like to be able to see the whole thing.
@Meade Vlog channel I will if you will!

It’s not really a stereotype, it was how life was in that portrayed era. Yes it sucked, but the show did a good job showing it.

I love it. When America was safe and everything was in order.
I guess this movie is banned now. 2020 is messed up

I don't follow@@thebeginning2595
You can't be this dense... the film is a fictitious depiction of adventures of a shoe shine boy and a runaway slave during the Civil War. 🤦🏿
so racists
AmeriKKKhastan ... sad.(smh)
They were happier that way.
