Not sure if I am able to accurately articulate how I comprehend the value Shame, but I would say it can be interpreted as a sense of self-awareness and/or conscience. For example, when you do something wrong (though some things that are defined as “wrong” in the traditional Chinese context may no longer hold true in the current era) you feel ashamed of it because you are aware of the weight and impact of your wrongdoing and feel guilty for what you have done (as opposed to being “thick-skinned” and unfazed about it, which kind of shows a lack of awareness that what you have done is wrong/bad, and possibly also a lack of intention to reflect upon your mistakes/change for the better).

Actually the meaning of Shame in English can be that too and is opposite of Shameless (thick skin)

you feel shame when you feel that you have disappointed expectations, fallen short, or are unworthy. so its not so much just about fitting in or harmony, but having a sense of humility and recognising that there is a greater and more noble idea than yourself which you are subordinate to.

I think the best way to explain is Paiseh-ness.
You Paiseh towards someone or somebody makes you more considerate. That’s why harmony with others. 😊

I will say that in the past, I used to hate all the Chinese culture shit, I thought it was boring and outdated. I grew up very Westernized surrounded by a lot of Western media. I only enjoy CNY food and ang pao. But it was only after leaving SG that I finally realized how much I appreciated the Singapore and Chinese culture as well as how important family is.
IDK but I think only when you feel like the minority, do you really start to connect with people of your similar background and appreciate what your culture is. The SG community outside of SG is more connected than the people back at home. Immediately after I came back for holiday, I started asking my mom more about legends and holidays. And took it upon myself to learn how to make Mooncakes, Pineapple tarts and Ondeh ondeh.

If I am not wrong, the reason for different readings in all places is because each zodiac is further split into gold, wood, water, fire, earth. So it depends if u are a water dog or earth dog, so on and forth.

if i rmb correct, the dragon going to be the first. but the dragon help some of the zodiac animal to cross the river that's why the dragon been held back. Some of the story say that the dragon help to extinguish one of the village that's on fire which cause him to fall behind the first 4 animal. (Just throwing in some of my mythology knowledge)

The dragon was the only one who could fly. Hardly a fair race in the first place 😂

The cow was not fast but hardworking because it set off the earliest. The race was not started at the same time. However the invitation to be part of the Zodiac was sent at the same time. So on that day to report, it is up to the animals to decide when they want to start the journey. ^_^

I think the shame can be interpreted as collectivism. One would want to ensure they uphold certain values to upkeep the clan / family reputation in our traditional, Asian collectivist culture.
As opposed to an individualistic culture where independence and personal belief or comfort is prioritised.

China has a few thousand years history. China is not CCP or the China it is today. Jon Paul should go read China history books, no need watch their shows. We also have lots of Dynasties. Most of us are direct descendants of Han Dynasty. I love to study Chinese history when I was in school and it was one of my stronger subjects.
Still today Singapore Chinese including me are influence by western media.

Personally, I think the Chinese word “廉耻” being translated as “shame” is not very accurate. My interpretation of 廉耻 should be understood as self-consciousness or awareness of what is right/wrong. Chinese philosophy believes every individual living in a society needs to understand and constantly be aware of how one’s behaviour could impact others and influence our society, for the good(廉) or bad(耻). Only if one is aware of what is right or wrong(知廉耻), then he can do the right thing for himself and for society at large.

Shame is an emotion that happens you did not meet other people’s/ society’s/ external standards. (As opposed to guilt which is about not meeting your own standards.) So shame does maintain harmony because it helps to maintain people’s/ society’s/ external standards. But whether the standards are ok, relevant, etc or not is another conversation to be had.
