As a self-professed music snob, I never really gave modern pop a shot. I thought it was derivative and cringy. That being said, I am a giant sci-fi fan. Nicki Minaj is now one of my favorite modern era artists because of this video. Every time I play it, a smile breaks my face every single time and I start to cry because of how joyous some of my favorite sci-fi is presented here. Thank you, Closetfan. You’ve brought a ray of beauty, happiness and me screaming “SPACE!” like Tim Curry every time I watch this. ❤
Every few months, I come back and watch this video. Every time I do, I choke up, tear up, and grin like a fool. Born too late to explore the world, born too soon to explore the stars.
This is fantastic. Someone mentioned “the starships vid” as being one of their all-time faves on tumblr with no further information, but when I went looking and saw the username I knew this had to be it!! The song choice and editing are fantastic and it’s reigniting my desire to watch some of the shows I missed when they were new. Thank you for sharing this great vid!
I grew up on sci-fi, sci-fi held my family relationships together when we were falling apart... even as we all went our separate ways, we came together to watch our goddamn weekly episodes. I very literally owe my life and my children's lives to sci fi (I met my spouse in a Star Trek chat room). As cheesy as this is... this made me tear up. Wonderful.
Thanks! And yes, there are many sources that I was not able to include in the vid because it was made in less than two weeks on deadline and I didn't have access to a lot of material. Hopefully the vid still conveys the joy of spaceflight and space exploration even if all the specific examples couldn't be featured.
This fanvid is one of my all time favorites that I always find myself rewatching. I love how it expresses the duel emotions of "yay, we're in SPACE!" and "oh crap, SPACE!", sprinkled with a little awe for the universe. So well edited! :)
4 years later, I'm back watching this again! (Not even the first revisit this year.) Just heard the song on my iTunes shuffle and the desire to rewatch was back. The legacy of this vid lives on! :)
I just want to say that, I found this video years ago - possibly as long as 11 years ago when you posted it, and I always come back to it -- and it's always just as good as I remember. Its one of my favourite videos on you tube and had a huge influence on how I edit my own videos. Just wanted to show some love and appreciation for a hugely fun and fantastic edit!
I really enjoyed this. Instead of using the typical rock n' roll or orchestral music, you used upbeat, fun music that matched really well with the interspersed scenes of camaraderie between characters. Really makes us remember that it's not just about the cool spaceships, but also about the great character moments.
I read 1200pp of zombie fiction (the Newsflesh trilogy) in two days, capped by the account of the 2014 SDCC zombie outbreak titled "The Last Stand of the California Browncoats." And then I clicked this link. Best crying fit I've had in months. Keep flying.
For me, this video gives me nostalgia, from watching WALL-E as my first movie in theatres to watching Star Trek and Star Wars with my parents as a kid.
Just as us SF fans take crap from outsiders, we tend to tear each other apart about what SF is better than others. That said, I love how you got a huge mix of decades, styles, and genres. I agree that B5 would have been nice to see as well as a shot of Alex's Gunstar doing the Death Blossom would have been awesome.....but still, absolutely incredible work.
I was having one of the worst weeks of my life till I saw this. It tapped into that optimistic spirit I hadn't felt in a loooong while. Thanks for that!
Thanks very much! Re: missing ships and shows, I made this vid in less than two weeks on deadline and didn't have access to a lot of material. Hopefully it still conveys the joy of spaceflight and space exploration even if all the specific examples couldn't be featured.
By the time Wall-E came out my tears were flowing like I fraking finally understand this Nicki Minaj song it's actually a glorious celebratory anthem uniting the most passionate people on Earth aka Sci-Fi fans.
This may be the video I have watched the most on UA-cam. Not a Nicki Minaj fan at all, but when I hear this song on the radio now, I love it. Much the way I'm not a Hendrix fan but when his version of Watchtower comes on anywhere I am transported to the Galactica.
It certainly conveys the joy of spaceflight and space exploration and makes me feel I was brought up on the right shows! Even though I've seen like half of the list.
This is one of my favorite fanvids of all time and it never ceases to give me chills, and I love how on every rewatch, there's something new to notice -- like the sex pollen and the Space Odyssey clip playing during "Like it's your last chance." The editing is impeccable, it hits the beat *so hard,* and most of all, every second of it is suffused with the fact that this was made by someone who really, really, *really* loves and knows their sci-fi.
The fact this was made in little over a week is bragging rights. This video is wonderfully synched with a huge amount of source material. I know others here were calling for "more sci-fi sources" but I honestly don't feel the video was lacking for pacing as a result. A truly great piece of work now added to my playlist. Thank you closetfan for what you have artistically created here.
The love you gave to all the mechanics and engineers at "if you want more, than here I am" was so lovely. This video feels like comfort food for my soul even after all these years.
The best thing I have seen in a long time. Total nostalgia trip some great memories of my favorite shows and you even managed to squeeze in Wall-e! The work that went into this should not be taken for granted fantastic job well done...wasn't a fan of that song but your video sold it to me!
I'm drawing a comic right now about how I watched this at the Wiscon Vid Party and sang along and cried with a huge room full of nerds! I'm so grateful that this wonderful thing is in the world!
+olivia brocklehurst I agree! That's awesome that you got to see it at the museum. & sorry to have missed you by a couple of days - I was there on Friday!
Aside from the fact that this is impeccably put together and edited, I love the shows you chose to use. I think you included every one of my favorite space opera sagas. I'm especially glad you gave such attention to DS9 and Voyager, since those lesser-known Star Trek series are often snubbed in the world of sci-fi. Closing on Voyager really touched me, as it's my favorite TV show. And the Pigs in Space clip was a real treat. Overall I would say it's the diversity of shows that makes this video so great. It had doses of dead serious shows like Battlestar Galactica and Sunshine, ridiculous ones like Spaceballs and Pigs in Space, and everything in between. If not for that weird salad of moods, this would just be like any other video. Bravo!
Honestly one of the most iconic, fantastic fan music videos on the internet, an absolute classic I show to anyone I know who loves scifi and hasn't seen it already.
I was laughing maniacally and crying at the same time. You truly hit the sweet spot for me. This video sums up all the best about being a Sci Fi nerd. Thank you so much!
I'm pretty stoic, but I got goosebumps throughout. I wished it would go on for five or six minutes so you'd have time for more (Silent Running? the spacewalks in Outland?). I'm so glad to see Forbidden Planet working with Spaceballs! Wow, thank you; thank you!
this is far too well made picard touching the phoenix says it all. JOY. Pure relished joy for our favorite dream and of course wall-e touching stardust while the song goes pseudo calm and singing "reach out and touch the sky-y-y" is pretty perfect But what really excels the whole thing is the beat for beat tone-matched editing and finding all the common moments across franchises (spinning ships, awesome piloting, space warps, getting your hands dirty with machines, sex, games, comradery) to create a since of unity and celebration
Thanks for your comment. There are many sources that I was not able to include in the vid because it was made in less than two weeks on deadline and I didn't have access to a lot of material. Hopefully the final product still conveys the joy of spaceflight and space exploration even if all the specific examples couldn't be featured.
Hi, that's from the pilot of Odyssey 5. Fun Showtime series until it got canceled. If you (or others!) are wondering about any other clips, if you follow the link in the video description you'll find a table I put together that lists the clip sources and the lyrics side by side.
11 years, 7 months, 3 weeks and 1 day since this was first posted, and it still gives me the chills every time I watch it.
The still might be the best and most comprehensive love letter to Sci fi ever done.
As a self-professed music snob, I never really gave modern pop a shot. I thought it was derivative and cringy. That being said, I am a giant sci-fi fan. I will never tire of 'Ludicrous Speed'.
Every few months, I come back and watch this video. Every time I do, I choke up, tear up, and grin like a fool.
Born too late to explore the world, born too soon to explore the stars.
I always get alittle choked up watching this video.
Humanity is flawed but we deserve the stars...
This is fantastic. If there is ever a single video that can unite Star Trek and Star Wars fans, this is it.
I am slowly dying of joy over Farscape actually appearing somewhere.
Watching this AGAIN 10yrs later thank you for this scifi geek party 🛸
Thanks! And yes, there are many sources that I was not able to include in the vid because it was made in less than two weeks on deadline and I didn't have access to a lot of material. +megaloo Thank you! I'm so glad you enjoy it, and to hear from another person who shares my love of space and space-related movies/TV.
4 years later, I'm back watching this again! (Not even the first revisit this year.) Just heard the song on my iTunes shuffle and the desire to rewatch was back. The legacy of this vid lives on! :)
When I feel down, and overwhelmed, and have too much I can carry on my mind. My mind turns to this video.
Thank you Goon Sir. For Giving Me Hope.
This remains one of the greatest vids
'A ship in port is safe. But that is not what ships are for.'
- Captain James T. Kirk
Battlestar & Serenity, my darlings.
Happy 5 year anniversary to the best love letter to Starships

How Did i Only Just Now Find This!?!?! This Is Awesome!
every now and again i get the hankering for this video and ever time it DOES NOT disappoint
Star Wars, Star Trek, and Stargate. The nerd trifecta. They never are and never were mutually exclusive.
Can't believe i've only just found this video. ❤ Happy that Farscape is included, and sad that Space Above and Beyond is not there 😢
I really enjoyed this. Every time I see this it makes me cry, in the best possible way.
For me, this video gives me nostalgia, from watching WALL-E as my first movie in theatres to watching Star Trek and Star Wars with my parents as a kid.
This remains the best video ever made, probably

Thanks for that!
Honestly, this will forever be my favourite video on the internet.
I had waaaaaaaaaay too much fun with this video.
I heard this song on the radio and it brought tears to my eyes because I was picturing this vid the whole time. TEARS!
Thanks very much! Re: missing ships and shows, I made this vid in less than two weeks on deadline and didn't have access to a lot of material. Hopefully it still conveys the joy of spaceflight and space exploration even if all the specific examples couldn't be featured.

Agreed. Give that man, the Independence Day salute.
Had to come back and watch repeatedly after the Falcon Heavy launch. I've always loved how this video makes me love a song that I'd otherwise hate.
It probably says a lot about me that as much as I loved this video, my favorite bits were the Wall-E bits. Still, fantastic video.
Starships were indeed meant to fly!
This may be the video I have watched the most on UA-cam. Not a Nicki Minaj fan at all, but when I hear this song on the radio now, I love it. Much the way I'm not a Hendrix fan but when his version of Watchtower comes on anywhere I am transported to the Galactica.
+John Arsenault-Rivenburg What a wonderful thing to hear! I'm glad you enjoy the vid so much. Thanks for stopping by to comment.
It certainly conveys the joy of spaceflight and space exploration and makes me feel I was brought up on the right shows! Even though I've seen like half of the list.
Thanks closetfan! I echo other comments in saying that this is what I imagined the first time I head the song. You gave life to the images in my head.

this is one of the best videos on youtube
i don't understand why there aren't more views
Still the most BALLER "Starships" vid out here!
Love, love, love it! I know some clips r only avail in 480p, but wish they were upscaled where needed. You might like The Starship Vlog.
This friggen video just puts my love for all sci-fi stuff in sharp relief, this has to be one of my most favorite videos ever I can't like it enough!
This video makes me so happy. I swing by every so often and watch it just to brighten my day.
Still watch this every few weeks because it's wonderful. Eagerly awaiting your sequel. ;)
Did I ever mention how happy this vid makes me? :)
This is the kind of stuff I think about when I hear this song too!
Excellent video. My favorite part is the two Sulus. Reminded me I still have the heart of a Trekkie.
Dude, I was having one shitty day, thanks for giving this old geek a big smile. Rebel for life!!!
Hands down one of the best music videos I have EVER seen!
This is just, one of the greatest. Space! Silliness! Awe and wonder! It has it all.
The fact this was made in little over a week is bragging rights. This video is wonderfully synched with a huge amount of source material. +AvengerReloaded Thank you very, very much!
Thanks for including Stargate Atlantis in this
I rewatch this anually. thanks for making a classic
Everything about this video makes me smile. Its perfect.
The love you gave to all the mechanics and engineers at "if you want more, than here I am" was so lovely. This video feels like comfort food for my soul even after all these years.
Is is a tribute to my nerdiness that I knew every one of the scenes in this? Great job. Thanks!
The best thing I have seen in a long time. Total nostalgia trip some great memories of my favorite shows and you even managed to squeeze in Wall-e! The work that went into this should not be taken for granted fantastic job well done...wasn't a fan of that song but your video sold it to me!

Fanworks beget fanworks beget fanworks! How awesome. If your comic will be online, please link me - I'd love to see it.
#nerdlove4thewin
I’d also like to see it!
This is it. My favourite fanvid of all time 😭😭😭
What a fantastically well edited video! I absolutely love it, amazing job!
As a TOTAL tribute to my GEEKDOM, I found I know at least 98% of the ships shown in this video!
THANKS closetfan!
GEEKS RULE!
Watching this renewed my desire to finish my Sci-fi novel. Thank you 😁
This still gives me shivers
This turned my whole evening around!
I have seen this video dozens of times, and it never stops being awesome. Absolutely fantastic!
i saw this at the vancouver art gallery today. it was kind of surreal

No problem. :)
TheLegendaryBlackBeastOf Aaagh Right? Piiiiiigs Innn Spaaaace! 😂😂😂 And bonus points from me for Archer!
Still one of the best fanvids out there. It's perfect. I just had to share it with my nerd-in-training child.
I've got to agree - every time it gets to "Ludicrous Speed" I'm just doubled over laughing.
Honestly one of the most iconic, fantastic fan music videos on the internet, an absolute classic I show to anyone I know who loves scifi and hasn't seen it already.
It's been years and this amv holds up so well. A lifetime favourite!
OMG - awesome!! Reccing it everywhere! I could watch it a million times! What a great job you did, with the editing and the song and EVERYTHING! Wow!
Re-watched today, I love it so!
I've never heard this song before; the pacing with all the geek references is insane. To paraphrase Krieger: MY GEEK-ON CAN ONLY GET SO HARD.
back again years later to say that Yes this is still completely iconic and makes me smile every time
this is one of my favorite vids, it feels like a tribute how much humans love space and our endless curiosity and desire to get out there.
I get teary eyed watching this video. It's so fucking good. Great song choice, great editing, just... fucking yes.
This whole video is worth it for the beauty shots of Moya alone.
+ahkileez Yes! Thank you, someone who knows Farscape.
Graduation song for Starfleet Academy!
I was laughing maniacally and crying at the same time. You truly hit the sweet spot for me. This video sums up all the best about being a Sci Fi nerd. Thank you so much!
I watch this every time I’m feeling sad and small and it reminds me of the joy that sci-fi has brought to me over the years. Thank you for this!!
How does this not have a million plus views, that was epic. Seriously, very well put together, looooooooved it.
Achievement unlocked!
Last week at the Vancouver Art gallery, we were delighted to find it part of the exhibit! Had us laughing out loud in the middle of a museum :)
The video makes this song SOOOO much better, I actually enjoy this song now
One of the finest sources of Starship pornography I have ever seen. Excellent.
What?!
@@domiv766 If this doesn't give you chills then nothing will!
this is far too well made

I watch this video about once a month, and I tear up like a baby every single time. This is a masterpiece.
If I'm having a bad day, this is one of my go-to videos to cheer me up. has been for a long time. it's perfect.
Iconic
Thank you! It was a lot of work compressed into a very short period of time, so I appreciate your comment all the more!
