    Thank you so much for that video it's saved me a lot of time out shopping and in the middle of trying to buy an antenna splitter

    Very good explanation especially for North American TV and satellite frequency. I must add that at 2:32 for Europe satellite frequency is 950 - 2150 MHz considering there are 4 bands on satellite Vertical Low Band, Horizontal Low Band (10.70 - 11.70 GHz) and Vertical High Band, Horizontal High Band (11.70 - 12.70) and the output frequency is for Low Band 950 - 1950 MHz and for High Band 1150 - 2150MHz. For cable the frequency is also 5 - 1000 MHz in Europe but in practice they use the frequency 48 - 858 MHz for both internet and digital TV. Looks like in North America the OTA frequency is reduced to 600 MHz because of LTE 4G, I've seen that there are many interferences especially with tropospheric ducting. In Europe the OTA is on UHF 470 to 790 MHz (in the past it was 470 - 862 MHz) For OTA I wouldn't use standard splitters it makes the signal worse, you mandatory need an amplified splitter. But if you use a cable and satellite splitter i would recommend at each end a diplexer and an antenna (OTA) amplifier.

      @@NorthcoasterHobby I forgot to tell you that there is a special TV splitter that combines both OTA and satellite signal. It has 4 outputs and it doesn't affect other satellite receivers when you watch a satellite channel (doesn't matter if it's on horizontal or vertical band) For example you can watch a channel on horizontal band and another person can watch a channel on vertical band. The TV splitter is called a MULTIPLEXER there are 3 models" The first is "Satellite/Terrestrial TV Combiner SSC-4 (Quad)" the second is "QUAD LNB / Terrestrial TV Combiner: Axing SWE 40-01" and the third is "Satellite & Terrestrial TV Combiner: SCQ-410 by TELKOM TELMOR" they are made in Poland you can find on dipolnet website. They have 5 inputs, one for OTA antenna (47 - 862 MHz) and 4 inputs from LNBs (you can also connect to a switch if you have multiple dishes). And 4 outputs, on these outputs the OTA signal is combined with the satellite signal. And allows 4 satellite receivers to work independently and on the same cable you have OTA TV. Diplexers and OTA antenna amplifiers are mandatory.

    The only problem I have with satellite splitters is that they tend to be all ports power passing, which it seems like however they build them makes the splitte have really poor return loss, like 10-12db typical and 8-10db being acceptable before failing QC, while CATV grade splitters with a single port passing are rated at typical return loss over 20db, if it's all you can find locally I'd go on ahead and use a satellite splitter, but I'd replace it with a Antronix splitter with a part number begining with CMCP , Commscope SV-(number of ports)GP , or PCT-1000-(number of ports)WP or a similar single port passing splitter you can find a data sheet for that has a reasonable return loss.

      But that splitter is only rated for 900-2050mhz and wouldn't work for OTA, it might pass OTA frequencies but since it's rated for 900-2050mhz, the splitter may have been designed for the best impedance matching between 900-2050mhz so OTA frequencies would likely have the same problem that the wider band all ports passing satellite splitters have with poor return loss on OTA frequencies.

      Using a splitter in reverse to combine 2 antennas can sometimes work but is not ideal. Here’s a video I made about options for combining 2 antennas:
      Options for combining 2 TV Antennas into one Coaxial Cable ua-cam.com/video/dym7UAR22ug/v-deo.html
      Since the making of the video, there is a newer device on the market to connect 2 antennas called the SmartKom, made by Televes. It’s a more costly option but does an excellent job. More information here:

    Guys Iv got really confused. Would you recommend all ports pass splitter for OTA (w/ amplifier) or no ports pass.

    • @NorthcoasterHobby
      @NorthcoasterHobby  11 місяців тому +1

      Use a power pass splitter, especially with an (outdoor) pre-amp. This allows DC voltage to pass through back to the preamplifier at the antenna from any port. With an indoor amplifier either kind of splitter can be used because the splitter is installed after the amplifier. However a power passing splitter gives you room to change up the system down the road.

      You will have to trace the cables back to see which is which. Worst case, you may have to call your service provider for some help.

    • @NorthcoasterHobby

      A signal directly from a dish? It shouldn’t damage the TV, but you will not get any signal. It’s a different bandwidth of frequencies and a totally different broadcast standard.
