    He was very talented, I grew up with those two films and loved both of them. I miss seeing films with big star casts, the last one may have been Midway.

    Irwin didn't talk about his earlier television work after becoming a "Big Time Movie Producer/Director." I would love to have heard him talk about Lost In Space with some sort of fondness.

    What's really interesting to me is his accent. You can almost hear the English in his english although we all know it's a New York accent. I doubt if it came from any Mid-Atlantic accent for his background (although he is in the entertainment industry).

    Jonathan Harris painted Allen as a mean-spirited prick. He did a lot of great stuff. But its sad to hear things like that, because I don't think anyone has the right to be treated that way. Granted, Harris comes off as a bit of an aloof snob, so who knows?

    Irwin had the weirdest wig or whatever it was and when you were in his company you made sure not to stare at his head -- he was very sensitive about his toupee and even when his back was to you and you stared he would quickly turn around knowing you had been staring at that thing on his head. I would normally finish a comment about the deceased by writing RIP but not for Irwin.

    My heartburn with regards to Mr Allen was that NASA had allegedly approached him about a consultancy for LIS and he snubbed them. It's not surprising that the series didn't see syndication success as did Star Trek. By the time of season two the plots became totally ridiculous and absorbed in the deviousness of Dr Smith. Jonathan Harris makes it no secret in his interviews about how he engineered the character so that he lasted well beyond 'Special Guest Star' status. Seasons two and three were ridiculous. Thereafter, I developed no interest in Allen's other ventures.

      Agree, low grade entertainment that all tasted the same. The tackiness and crappie sets were the reason to watch and laugh. Erwin Allen gave to film what McDonald's gives to gastronomy.

      No, they weren't. Allen is a common surname and there was no relation.
      Similiar to how there's no relation between Michael Keaton and Buster Keaton, Robert Rodriguez and Freddy Rodriguez, and so on.

      @@magmasunburst9331 They were a handful when they were school age. Woody would build little towers out of his meticulously cleaned match sticks. Then Irwin would come into the room and smash them with his croquet mallet. Gracie would be drying Woody's tears as she screamed profanities in Yiddish at Irwin.

    @brainsareus
    "Spock's Brain" and "The Trouble With Tribbles" were brilliant? Hardly.
    But still, you must keep things in perspective. Hollywood was then as it is now- all about money, and Irwin Allen knew how to make films and television that succeeded in doing so. His 1961 motion-picture "Voyage To The Bottom Of The Sea" was a box-office smash in an era of low-budget B-movies. During the '60s, his series were more popular than Roddenberry's "Star Trek" and "The Lieutennant" combined.
