Melissa K. Norris - Modern Homesteading I had Achilles surgery that kept me from my full garden this year. My hubby and son took the opportunity to replace my old raise beds with new ones. I always grow them, this year being the exception. I steam, roast, microwave or broil them. I add different seasonings....butter, salt, olive oil, sesame seeds, bacon +grease, balsamic reduction, garlic.....and so on. The only way I will not eat them is if the have been frozen. NOTHING better than fresh!
I love to roast Brussel sprouts in the oven! I cut them in half and roast 425F for 20 min and then drizzle a little liquid aminos and honey over them! 😋
This is my second year growing Brussel sprouts- still no sprouts. 😕. This was helpful though- pretty sure they need more nitrogen! Plus I will try topping them next year.

It may if they keep attacking the farmers with the climate change hoax. Plant thrive at 1000ppm of CO2 and we have roughly 400ppm of CO2 in the atmosphere today. No CO2 (net zero) = no plants = no oxygen. Many greenhouses use CO2 generators to increase CO2 to 1000ppm to get maximum yields. You're the carbon they want to kill. @@cherylbritt7227

Hi Melissa, I love Brussels Sprouts and they grow well in my part of England. Apart from one year I have been able to provide sprouts for our Christmas dinner (a traditional accompaniment to Turkey at Christmas here) every year for the last fifty years my wife and I have been married. For those who are not so keen on Sprouts as I am I partially cook them then shred them and pan fry with bacon and chestnuts and even my daughter, who detests them, will have a reasonable helping and enjoy them.
I am so envious of you folks that know how to live off the land. So many of us don't live in environments where that is readily feasible, so watching folks like you gives me something to shoot for. Good job and love the background sounds (i.e. rooster) from time to time.
If I can give you some advice. No matter where you live I started gardening when I was going to anaesthesia school and all I had was a balcony in a very tiny apartment well a couple of 5 gallon buckets and I was grown peppers and tomatoes and wonderful things I need to know poke some holes in the bottom of the bucket so that you have drainage going to grab some decent potting soil and I know everybody wants to be organic but starting out it never hurts to use a little miracle Gro it’s very wonderful fertilizer and it’s very forgiving. There’s lots of organic ones on the market too. Grab some seeds and go that’s really all you have to do. Main things every plant needs sunlight decent soil good drainage and water. If you’re using city water just put it in gallon jugs leave the cap off or loose set it out in the sunshine and in a day The chlorine will dissipate you can’t boil chlorine away but the sunlight will get rid of it for you! Good luck have some fun it’s really wonderful to grow things
@@oneanddonetzone3673 Thank you. Your advice is spot on. I did pretty much what you are suggesting and started my plants this spring. Started them in the basement with cheap shop lights that meet the minimum color spectrum and lumens. It's been a cold winter here in the middle of North Dakota, but my plants are ready for transplanting to buckets. Thanks again for the encouragement.

I absolutely love your video. You speak loud, clear and so detail straight to the point which I really enjoy watching. Now I know exactly what I should do with my plants. I thank you very much for taking your time and effort to make and share this lovely video to help others. I cut them in 1/2 then massage with garlic olive oil and use the steamer to slowly cook until they start to tender take them out, grind fresh black pepper over and chom chom with my steak. XO
I’ve grown B. Sprouts for quite a few years. A couple tips from my experience 1) start seedlings by planting very deep in the bed. Just a couple leaves visible and 2) lots of nitrogen. Fertilize until you get leaf tip burn and then back off (I use composted chix manure)Yours are doing really well.
Hi, I gotta ask about timing...Have you ever planted in early spring? My store bought sprout plants are looking really good! First time, ever! I also plan on starting seeds soon. I’m in southern Ohio and it looks as if the summer start and fall harvest will be the best. But, what about the pretty plants that I have now? They’re starting to form sprouts. Should I let them take their time. Or start cutting off leaves? 🤷🏼♀️
Cherryparfait41 sounds like your sprouts are doing well. When they get about 2’ tall you can pinch off the top and a few leaves. Supposedly that puts more of the plants energy into sprout development. I’ve pulled off leaves and have left them on in various seasons. Didn’t seem to make much of a difference. Good luck with your sprouts!
Aphids go to my brussels sprouts like magnets all spring. I planted all the smelly companion plants around them, and that is removing the aphids from the lowest parts. I let mine go to seed, and that highest part is where all the bugs go. In summer, now I am attracting lacewings and ladybugs, which is good for all my garden. Thanks for the tip about topping the plant. Think I will try this around September/October. I live in PacNW too.

I learned that brassicas can survive down to 10 degrees F. We've hit frigid temps but I put my concerns aside and just let these amazing plants do their thing, after watering them when day temps were 50F they look awesome and doing well. These things are the only thing green on my property, incredibly hardy. Our lowest temps hit 18F and the ground should be frozen for the winter here but isn't, surprisingly.
How do you get them to come back next year? Can I cut the stalk down leaving the roots in. So they come back for year two. I have heard you can get tqo years of sprouts out of your plants
Just come across this video, I know that it’s a 2 years old video. A tip, instead of waiting for the lower large leaves turn yellow harvest the large leaves when they’re nice and green, they’re edible and delicious. Cook then like any leafy green. The way I like them is to sauté them with bacon and garlic.

I stuck a fresh brussel sprout in a baby food jar with water. It crazy rooted. I'm gonna try growing it.

I live in the Midlands UK and our Brussel sprouts are doing fine, all I have to do now is cut off the lower leaves as you have advised. In your email you talk about getting SAD, the lack of sunshine in winter. it is important to get out in the sun every chance you get, I have a dog and we get 3 good long walks every day in the woods and I have an allotment to care for so I get plenty of exercise in the fresh air.
Stuart Wakefield I keep asking brits what allotments are! So far no answers.
@@jimwilleford6140 Allotments are government-owned land run by the local council and rented out to people like me. The allotment I have has 34 plots and has a water supply and a secure gate. We all share knowledge and plants and is a very friendly place. This time of year when we have more food than we need we give to food banks so others can have fresh organic food free.

I am making a strong effort to educate my urban block in Medford, OR, as to just how much nutritious food we can grow in Permaculture beds in our own back yards. My goal is to expand my neighbors interest by showing them my own abundance. I have several interested. We are a working class neighborhood, and so:many jobs are being outsourced or abolished by automation. I truly think with Trumps tariffs, food is going to skyrocket.
@@jimwilleford6140 The main reason I grow organic food is for quality and taste. There is so much junk food that is highly processed and full of sugar that is making so many people in both of our countries sick.

Very nice! I am trying a second time with brussels. We have such hot summers here, I didn't start them until Sept 1. I started in ground from seed so they are about 3" tall. We shall see. Great advice

We hit 27 degrees in Marysville already. It was like 10-2!!! We normally don’t get that cold till December! Lost so much. Back to average weather now but had huge cold snap.
Hello Melissa, new to your channel. Very informative video. I’m gonna cut off the lower leaves. Last year my Brussel sprouts didn’t do well, but this year they seem to do better. I stir-fry them with unions, garlic, bacon and sun dried tomatoes. Or use them through my mashed potatoes. Or just cook them and simmer with some butter, salt and nutmeg. Take care Joyce

Thanks for making this video. I tried to grow brussel sprouts this year and they didn't do well at all. Thinking that it is the nitrogen levels. I have a raised bed that my hubby made for me and I use totes in it to hold my soil. I will have to get my soil tested so I am ready to try again next season.
We live on the dry side of Cascade mountains and moved to property 3700 ft in the woods. We have a very short growing season. I staeted sprouts from seed in early spring, the plants start were planted out in our hightunnel and are now about 2 ft tall. I began removing leaves awhile ago just so other plants could get light and air. I havent seen sprouts form yet. Its my first go at trying to grow sprouts. I do plan to sow another round of them soon. Our nights are in low 40s still
First time growing Brussel sprouts and this video was very helpful. I’m going to be using a small hydroponic system to start them and I’ll transplant them when the temperature is right.

My first year growing a bigger garden. I have great brussel sprouts n wasnt sure why they arent big enough to harvest or what to do with them since everything else is done. Thanks for the tips. I didnt know to relocate each year n am doing brussel sprout trim today.
Good stuff here, thanks. For some reason I have the most trouble with brassicas, especially brussels. Luckily my season here (East TN) is long and we're having an even milder-than-usual autumn so hopefully I will be able to keep them going and get something worthwhile out of them.

i got a 4 pack of BS starts, bunged em in, and have let them rip for the past month or so.

Wow I got Nastrutians, aswell as the pepper grass or smart weed you got mixed in there, invasive but I dont mind to much, they eventually get large then they become compost, plus marigolds, they do. An awsome job at repelling insects and rodents❤️
Companion plants are the bee's knees for lots of reasons. It's great to see more and more people learning about them.

I am from a tropical country and I am trying to grow brussel sprouts.. the step is still in the germination.. in my village the temperature is approximately 14-28°C.. no farmer is growing it.. I am not sure about the harvest.. but at least I try to plant kind of vegetables that I had never consumed before.. another one is purple kale.. hope I can harvest them in 3 months a head..
Hello Melissa... first off THANK YOU! I have been watching a lot of your videos and the stories you put on FB. Can you tell me if you have grown brussels sprouts from scraps? I have started the process and I have all kinds of leaves and little sprouts but not a lot of roots yet. Just wondering if you had attempted this? I am fairly new to all of this. If I have missed a video that you've done, will you please give me the link or tell me where I can find it? Once again... thank you for all the great information. Can you do a video maybe using a white board showing which crops to plant that you like. What month to plant them. And then what crops are good to rotate in that soil.

Was going to start some seeds indoors and try to plant outside end of feb as we don’t typically get real hard frosts after that here in pdx...hoping they will mature before heat of July. Ever tried growing that early in the season?

I'm in NC, EASTERN, and my questions are: There are dozens of yellow flowers and tendrils but only one bottle gourd shaped watermelon. Mine survived all winter in Michigan and it was a cold ass winter and they all survived
Oct 3 was our hard frost everything was lost cept the brassicas. Snow is mulching them now!

Aloha and I really enjoyed your videos, especially the one on growing Brussel sprouts. My question to you is; my plants grew really well in my large pot until they reached about 12 inches tall. Very leafy but they just stopped growing. The leaves look great but they are not getting any taller or larger. What am I doing wrong? The temperature here in Hawaii is about 80 to 84 each day with about 73 during the night. Any suggestions by anyone?
Thank you very much! I was wondering why my sprouts did not grow bigger today. I think my plants are lack of nitrogen! I grow two plants, one of them was half taken by big animals against my fence( not all) half side of the leaves are gong! Do you think my sprouts can still grow?
This was our first year attempting to grow brussel sprouts. I tried to find info on growing them, but no such luck. I was getting worried that they were still too small and getting close to our frost date. Had no idea we could keep them in the ground after the frost and had my husband pull them all up. I am heartbroken, but will definitely try again next year :(
I planted many Brussels seeds last year and the slugs at them all:-( This year Claire's Allotment advised me to start them in trays and I did so now I have plants. The things that we learn on our gardening journeys:-)
It's pretty amazing how cold-hardy they are. I like to joke that brassicas are about the only plants where you can actually grow frozen veggies right out in the garden :p (seriously, we have harvested broccoli and brussels that were literally fully covered with frost, and the plants still lived a while longer.)

For a location that doesn’t have hard frosts, how long after planting would you start tp remove the lower leaves?
I live in Costa Rica where it's usually 70-80 degrees everyday. I planted sprouts from seed in May and they grew to only about 12". We figured our soil wasn't great so we worked on it and we never got any sprouts but the plant started growing " baby" plants. Should I remove those extra stems so the main plant gets more nutrients??? And how long will these plants keep going ??
Hi! I love growing sprouts! I have a question for everyone. I've grown sprouts for 4 years, always get full stalks, cut or pull bottom leaves. Last year 2 of my stalks had black and mushy sprouts. What could this be? I thought at first it was bugs but there were none. No aphids, garden wasn't wet. What is the mulch mix in this video? Does it help with moisture and insects? Thanks a bunch! ❤
i fry them in bacon grease, and a bit of seasoning, and then when they are done, i add some cooked chopped bacon, its delicious
Brussels sprouts are my favorite, and evidently Harlequin bugs feel the same about my brassica. In four days broccoli went from healthy to stumps. I have tried diatomaceous earth, garlic powder (scent deterrent), nematodes, destroying the leaves to name a few. Suggestions? Natural predators that continue into the next year would be great.
get a duck; trim its wings; put a low fence around the BS; put in a plastic dog crate for its house; water dish and put the duck in the penned up brussels area.it will eat all the bugs etc it can find.
Great info thank you we LOVE Brussels . What else should I look for in my soil, besides nitrogen. I am in Northern California and i guess i am to late to plant them this season? it is October 29th. This is new to me because this crop always comes out in the fall rather than when you plant in May so maybe weather difference?
They take about 100 to 120 days from planting to harvest, depends on if you stay warm enough for development during that time span.
For a first time grower, how big do the sprouts need to be to know it's time to harvest? And how do you harvest, just cut the sprouts off the stalk?

I have been using day-old human urine every week on my Brussel sprouts(no not on the leaves silly in the soil), when I stop doing it it stops growing, I don’t know if I should recommend it, but my brussel sprouts just don’t grow unless I use urine, not fresh urine but at least a day old and free from contamination. It’s gross but it’s so effective. Probably shouldn’t use it if you take medications of any kind
I live in Northern Cali up in the mountains. I am wondering about using fish emulsion and if it will draw the bears into my garden. They (and the deer) destroyed my garden last year so I am amending the fencing to make it 8’ high and adding a solar electric system. Have you had issues with bears due to the fish emulsion?
