    Great analysis Coach. This simple passing game blows my mind week after week. Its almost as if they don’t practice passing situations in practice. Lamar needs to develop but i dont see how he can with highschool/JV playcalls like this. Another veteran WR may help but these playcalls are predictable

    Hey also wanted to include dobbins had a lot of drops and Lamar didn’t trust him as a checkdown option. He would rather get the yards with his legs than throw it to dobbins.If they can get better personal for him he would be more willing to throw the ball you know.

      Agreed. I am a Ravens fan since day 1 of the franchise. I played a little and 2 of my 3 sons play, one is a QB (D2) and my middle son is entering HS as a receiver. Just a background to say that we all watch the game and call out the passing plays, who it’s going to and even down to the reads.
      Just as a fan of football, period it’s frustrating to watch. From a fans perspective they have drafted a ton of WR in the past two years that have some talent, and while there isn’t that number 1 alpha, the young guys have skills and if utilized correctly could certainly contribute and if nothing else put pressure on the defense and stop allowing teams to play there safeties ten yards off the ball and play downhill without fear of any receiver running past them. Like you said it’s one read and go. Literally just that simple.
      The conundrum is that against lesser teams the Ravens are able to get away with it and win most games with the running game. Which they’ve proven winning nearly 90% of Lamar’s regular season starts. But in the playoffs against teams with good defensive talent and good coaching.... It is like watching ground hogs day. You simply know what’s coming.
      My biggest fear as a fan is that the Ravens draft another WR or bring in one via FA and the team retains Greg Roman. Nothing will change.
      I actually like him but after San Francisco, Buffalo, and now Baltimore the pattern is conclusive. Brilliant run game play caller, horrible at drawing up a passing game that can compliment his run game. After two years the offense “expired”
      Time for the Ravens to graduate Lamar
      and move on from Roman

    JT, I really appreciate this video, thank you. I'm a huge Ravens fan, and I like to watch the All-22 of the games in my free time during the week. I've only recently stumbled upon your videos on UA-cam, and it's been such a great supplement to my film study! It adds a lot to my experience as a fan on Sundays.
    It's painful to watch my Ravens losing the way that they have. The rushing attack is just so versatile, I've never seen anything like it at an NFL level! Very innovative, and with such a high level of athlete that it's so difficult to stop. But the fact that they cannot throw the ball hurts them so much. I can't for the life of me figure out why play-action and RPOs don't seem to factor into more of their gameplans. Anyway, I'm hoping the Ravens get another IOL (hard to make throws when you're getting pressure in your face all game) and another high-end WR, preferably one that has played in high level passing attacks before. And I hope that Lamar demands more from his offensive coaches -- it is very sad to watch such a talent not being fully developed. Anyway, thanks again JT! Keep up the great work!

      Lamars being given a frustrating role to play. He's been obviously told he has to consider running 50% of the time, given his freakish speed, and ability to break it big time once or twice a game. Defenses start to spy for this, and it stops working, eventually. He needs a new start, where he can play confidently, first, as a game manager. Then RPO. Then use the break-one-running scripted play as a last resort. Ravens are becoming to predictable on offense.

  • @silentsniper1516
    @silentsniper1516 3 роки тому

    Great Breakdown. I will say. On the quads play, I don’t think the TE is a read during the play (Lamar never looks at him) but is a pre-snap read of “Do we like the matchup”. The other side of the play is just slot fade concept with a (maybe) runoff/eye candy (IMO I could see it being a read if there’s split safety coverage and you feel you can drop it over the LBs and in front of the safety). At worst, it occupies the backside safety and you’ve got the slot fade concept. I do agree that an over would be a nice variation especially since they have “Hollywood” who you could put into the Tyreek role, but I do wonder if they don’t trust Lamar with such a read (trying to keep things on one half of the field). Again though. Loved the video.

    I've never noticed this, but you pointing out how he is always looking to the other side of where the read is, he is probably trying to deceive players with his eyes right? If it happens all the time I don't think it's a coincidence. Like the play at 16:36 maybe he looks middle to try to draw the Andrews defender and then quickly throw to Andrews, but the defender didn't bite. Then 22:18 the read is to the right, he starts looking to the left, then looks to the right and throws (maybe that's why they got open!).

      He has been doing that since his rookie year, that is why his interception count is so low. The real problem the passing game is the lack of rhythm and over-reliance on Lamar to carry the run game. Not saying he would put up ARod numbers if they passed more but he can clearly throw well.

    This analysis was what we needed. I figured there was a mix of both, Lamar still growing as a passer and Greg Romans very poor passing concepts. Change is needed badly and we know Lamar isn’t going anywhere anytime soon. So, Greg Roman has to go because the Ravens can not afford to waste this dynamic talent. Getting a bonafide Number 1 receiver would be great😁. Even though the Ravens are notoriously cheap on offense and never get weapons to surround their Qbs. But this has to change because Lamar is too great of a player and needs help schematically and at skill positions.

    Sometime soon after the season ends, Steve Bisciotti, Eric DeCosta, John Harbaugh, and their CAP specialist, (and Ozzie if he wants to) will all head down to Bisciotti's home in Jupiter, FL for a season debrief. They'll go over everything and come out with a plan for the upcoming season. Everything, and I mean everything, about the organization's performance during the season will be discussed and plans for correction implemented.

    Thanks for the great breakdown.
    As a Ravens fan I appreciate your candid unbiased observations. You are spot on by saying that it’s many underlying causes.
    As a fan of the Ravens I have been critical of Lamar with his trust issues with players other than Hollywood Brown and Mark Andrews. On occasion Willie Snead.
    I’ve been critical of Lamar not understanding what’s open because he doesn’t trust his other guys. Boykins rarely gets the ball thrown to in traffic. I believe on the “sticks” portion that was Boykins over the middle who Lamar looked off. From watching this team day in and day out... Lamar doesn’t trust Boykins in space.
    If you look at the offense all year you will see his first read(s) are always Brown/Andrews

    • @DorkJelly
      @DorkJelly 3 роки тому +3

      I cant blame him for not trusting Boykins... A LOT of his interceptions come from trying to throw boykins a 50/50 ball. Not once has he been able to make a contested catch, and when he doesn't make the catch he doesn't even attempt to make sure the defender doesn't intercept it. His size is suppose to be his most valuable asset and yet he doesn't use it. Even Hollywood plays more physical than Boykins and that says a lot...

      I understand why Lamar doesn’t trust him because it’s earned. Quite frankly Boykins hasn’t earned his trust. But at some point Lamar has to develop trust and build confidence in all his receivers. I was using Boykins as the one example. I can recall multiple times Lamar has either pulled it down or looked the receivers (All except For Brown, Andrews) when they were open. It’s a trust issue that Lamar will have to overcome.
      I’ve seen quarterbacks over my time do this from Joe Montana era to Aaron Rodgers. Hell even Fitzpatrick will continue to throw to a WR to develop his confidence.

    • @mobrown1198
      @mobrown1198 3 роки тому

      @@DorkJelly maybe 2 interceptions this year not A LOT. lol. Some were bad passes some he tried to force to guys others Lamar has stared down the receiver. I get it, but it’s something he, Lamar has to do a better job with. THAT one play I was speaking of wasn’t even a 50/50 ball Boykins was open over the middle Lamar looked him off pulled it down and threw to Dobbins who dropped the pass. So the result was still the same.
      I don’t disagree that he has trust issues especially with Boykins but it’s his JOB to build his confidence up. Some of those 50/50 balls to Boykins were bad throws also.
      To be clear Boykins isn’t that guy. He has some athletic skills but lacks confidence and WR intangibles at this point.

It may be a JV play because its so simple but then again natural pure drop back passers like your Rodgers, Mahomes, Brees, etc. don't need complex play design to move the ball or avoid turnovers. They could probably run a mirrored go/speed out concept several times a drive and still move chains. This was Greg Roman trying to make Lamar something he really isn't. Bills are running simple cover 2 but the corners are holding on to the go routes real heavy. The field side speed out was wide open as expected. That's Lamar's faught.

    The O-line didn't exactly do the most sterling job of giving their QB more time. The progression on his reads has to be something that comes from his coordinator if they're not using line checks. It also looked to me like the Bills abandoned coverage on certain receivers even before Jackson had finished his windup. Lots of people don't like to hear it, but while it may be Roman is unimaginative and obstinate, it also seems, for some reason, he doesn't trust his last few QBs to take on more complicated plays and decision making, assuming he's capable of designing such things for his scheme. There needs to be some discussion of whether this is by necessity, is it an unconscious blind spot, or is it a deliberate part of his thinking.
