Absolutely beautiful RD, sure brings back great memories of my 1990 RZ 350 [The last of the RZ's ] The thing about these bikes is you can have a ton of fun at speeds that aren't completely irresponsible, boy do I wish they still made em.

thanks for the rad memories man. great job jeff! My first was the orange 75 I had gotten at 15 from a guy at school for $700, had low bars, orange oakly grips, and dg chambers, 2 years later i purchased a red '77 (wanted the blue but they had just sold it and i couldn't wait a week, good thing, cause a close friend got a blue one a week later) from brandon yamaha in florida, so i could get to work and school with the help of my grandmother who cosigned for the loan, i think the total was $999 out the door, or $99 a month for 12 months. i was a happy boy, life was much more simple then.

Thanks for the memories. I had a '74' RD 400 in silver.. Modded with larger carbs, boysen reeds, and exhaust with very large expansion chambers. Lots of fun until the oil pump gave up the ghost. Makes me want another one. Ah, the memories. Off the line it was super quick, and setting in traffic and seeing people looking for what was making that great exhaust note.

Hey guys you did a beautiful job on that rd400 I used to race 1 way back in the day in the early 80s so it brought back some great memories mine was the Rd Daytona special 400 but anyway on your shifter you could have just taken the original shifter and turned it around backwards and what it does it changes your shifting 2 one up and five down or maybe for them I forget I've had so many bikes since that one but I'm looking into finding another one soon good luck guys stay safe thanks for the video

that was my first street bike! back in 1988! a 1977 RD400! i paid $400 for it. it sat in the backyard for a little while because it needed a CDI box. then my younger brother bought a 1976 RD400 so i fixed mine so we could ride together.. unfortunately, he scuffed a piston due to leaning out. so i rebuilt the top end for him with .030 oversized wiseco pistons. his bike also had aftermarket pipes and had a quarter fairing around the headlight and was painted up like a kenny roberts bike. it looked awesome and would absolutely crush my bike on the straights.. (that part sucked lol) but what a blast we had! those bikes were just awesome! light and fast! ahh those days rocked!

Strange set of add one! I raced a RD400 (still have it) and ended up making my own rear sets. The passenger pegs are ridiculously placed and I can’t see having a passenger behind. But it looks nice! Hope you’ve got the carbs jetted properly for the expansion chambers. Erv Kanemoto’s pipes are the best for great power from 6-9,000.

I had a 75 rd250 (white w/red stripe). At 18,500 miles, I put a set of ported 350 jugs, chambers, fiberglass reeds and the gold heads on it. Absolutely brought it to life. From that point on, it spent half of its life on the back tire. For awhile I ran a set of wheelie bars on it. Cops would pull me over just to look at it. Over the years of owning it, I did outrun a few of them. I’d go straight home and repaint it and my helmet. 🤣
I let a guy ride it one day, he took off and the powerband kicked in and his legs went out. He set it back down and shifted into the next gear and away he went. I stood there waiting for him to come back for awhile. Then I saw him pushing it back. I asked him if it quit running and he said too fast…. too fast…🤣

If those are the original wheels - meh. They were only used because by that time they were _cheaper_ than spoked wheels but are (IIRC) nearly a kg heavier than the latter (might not sound like much, but that's unsprung mass which is Not Good). I'd have used alloy rims (might have necessitated using earlier RD hubs with a rear drum brake, but that's really no loss). Otherwise, lovely bike - RD's are genuine classics, and I still miss the RD250B I learned on.

When the RD400s first came out, people paid more to have the mags vs the spokes. Having them was an option then because standard after '76. The mags were cool at the time because no other street bike had them. The spokes are lighter and faster, but the mags look great on it and are part of the RD400 story.
